To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH J. MOSER, a citizen of the United States, residing in West Covington, in the county of- Kenton and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Can-Closures, of which the ihllowing is a specification. I
It is the object of my invention to provide a new and improved can-closure comprising a can-body whose upper "end is turned inwardly toward the longitudinal axis of the can for forming a strengthening-web for said upper end and then upwardly and prefera y taperingly toward said longitudinal middle, and terminating in a cut lip extending outwardly of the can-body for forming a tapering mouth, the said tapering mouth receiving inside thereof an op ositely-tapered plug having a depressed we and an upper outwardly and sidewardly extending doublewalled bead, the out edge of the metal'of said plug be ng inside said bead, the mating side taces of said double-walled bead engaging the side faces of said lip in closing the can, the

1 represents the can-body, which has a mouth formed of an annular wall of sheet metal having a laterally-extending strengthening-web at its bottom. Thus 2 is an annular rim portion for the top of the can-body,
which has an outer depending flange 3 for forming a shoulder 4, upon which the rim portion is supported on the upper edge of the can-body, the rim ortion being secured to the can-body by sol der or in other suitable manner. The said rim portion has a sidewardly inwardly extending and slightly downwardly tapering annular part 5, merging into a semibead 6, from the inner edge of which the said rim portion projects outwardly and taperin ly toward the lon itudinal axis of the canody for forming t e annular wall 7 of the mouth of the can-body, the said annular Wall being in the form of an u right frusto-cone and having an outer cut e ge 8 of the sheet metal, from which said rim portion is formed. The said out edge or lip 8 preferablyprojects above the horizontal ne of the upper edge of the oanbody. An intermediate shoulder 9 is thus formed on the rim portion between the annular part 5 and the semibead 6 of the rimportion, the said parts forming a transverse inwardly-extending annular web for the rim portion arranged to transversely reinforce the lower end of the annular wall of the mouth of the can-body for purpose hereinafter eziplained.

The transverse web at the mouth of the can-body formsa transverse strengthening structure for preventing flexure of the cam at its top.
. The cut edges of said plug and rim portion are rojected in a common direction. The dgu le beading at theouter end of the plug and the beading of the rim portion form a triple combination bead curled in similar direction.
For securely locking the plug within the mouth of the can I laterally expand the lower end of the tapering side wall of the plug for forming a continuous annular rib 25, extending annularly and continuously about the lower end of the plug, the said rib being located in substantially the horizontal lane of the metal forming the/lower curl of t e semibead of the transverse web connecting the wall of the mouth of the can with the sideof said can, thereby forming an exceptionally strong construction in that the lower end of the lug is expanded against transversely-exten ing metal. The rib 25 extends annularly and continuously under the transverse web of the mouth of the can-body and forms a lock against the giving or retraction of the practice having been found to be so secure that 'oils and other liquids which it has been found impossible to retain in other frictiontop cans without leaka e are held in my improved device without eakage, and the construction of my improved device is such as to permit materially larger packages to be made with success with friction-tops than has heretofore been accomlished.

A friction-to can havin'ga body whose upper end is provi ed with an inwardly latera y projecting annular web merging into an outwardly-projecting wall forming a mouth, said web comprising a curve at the bottom of said mouth, and a plug having tapering annular wall and an upper outer double-curled bead forming mating side faces facing each other in the inside of said bead at said taperin wall, the said wall of said body-mouth ta ing between said mating side faces in the inside of said double-curled bead of said plug, the said plug provided with an annular continuous rib extending laterally outwardly imjecting aterally and ownwardly taperingly toward the longitudinal axis of the can and merging into an upwardly-opening s ernibead for forming an annular laterally inwardly extending strengthening-web having an annular L shoulder therein and Iner 'ng into an annular wall extending upwar ly and taperingly toward the longitudinal axis of the can-body and being of frusto-conical shape and having an outer li formed of the cut edge of the sheet meta composing said rim portion, said lip projecting above the horizontal lane of the upper edge of the can-body, an a plug having an annular wall taperin downwardly toward the longitudinal axis 0 the can-body in the form of an inverted frusto-cone havin a connecting web at the smaller end thereo and an outwardly-projecting outer doublecurl bead at the outer end thereof, the outer and inner curls of said double-curl bead form ing adjacent side faces facing each other at the inner portion of said doub e-cur1 bead and forming an outwardly-flaring mouth at its bottom for receiving said lip, the outer edge of said bead taking against said annular shoulder in said rim portion, for forming six engaging annularly continuous side faces at the mouth ofthe can in substantially the same horizontal plane, the smaller end of the taper of said plug being expanded under the portion of larger diameter of. the taper of the can-mouth for forming a rib in substantially the horizontal plane of said stren thening- Web of said rim portion, substantialy as described.
