IMPROVEMENT IN PIsToN-non PAGKING.

T0 ALL WHOM IT MAY. CONGERN: V
Be it known that I, SAMUEL L'OGKARD, of Lagrange, in the county of Lagrange, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful .Improvement in Piston-Rodlacking; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art tomake and Ause the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to an vimprovement in packing around thepiston-rods of steam-engines, audwhich method is adapted to other purposes.; and it consists in the arrangement of conical packing-rings in achamber provided for the purpose in the cylinderlhead, and surrounding the s aid split packing-rings with a follower, and with a spiral spring, as will be hereinafter described.
Figure 1, represents a vertical section of the arrangement.
Figure 2 is an end view of the packing-rings and the follower.
Figure S is a vertical section of iig. 2 through'the line :z: z.

A is the cylinder-head. 4
B is the piston-rod. y I
C is the cap, which screws on to the collar of the cylinder-head.
d is a spiral spring. v
e is the inner packing-ring, and f is the outer packing-ring. The inner one fits the piston-rod, as does the lower portion of ltheouter one. These rings are cut, so that they can'be compressed.
l g is the follower, which iits on to the outer ring, as seen in the section, iig. 3, with a collar, 7L, around its top.
The spiral spring cZ bears against the collar 7L, and surroundsr the follower and rings, as seen'in g..1.
This packing-arrangement is placed lin a chamber, K, formed in the cylinder-head, and covered by the cap, C.
L represents orifices in the bottom of the chamber K, for admitting steam from the cylinder.
The spring, which rests on the bottom of the chamber K, bears against the collar of theffollower, and holds it inclose contact with the outer packing-ring, which :is crowded up against the under side o f the cap, whichinsures a tight joint' at that point.
When steam is admitted into the chamber K, the 'packing-rings are more or less compressed around the vpiston-rod, and crowded upward by the steam-pressure, so that the joint around the piston-rod must always be steam-tight, but I do not dependentirely upon the pressure of the steam for this purpose.
Ordinarily, the elasticity of the packing-rings andthe pressure of the spiral spring will be found sullicient to produce a steam-tight joint around the pistonsrod, andthrough the head.
It will be seen ithat: thetop of the ,collar h does not reach to the-top of the packing-rings, so that in pressing upwards, the spring al compresses. the packing around the piston-ered; consequently, if the steam-orifices L were closed, the joint would not leak steam under ordinary circumstances.
I do not, therefore, confine myself exclusively to either device, but propose to use the packing either with -or without the steam-pressure, as may he deemed most advisables Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire tp secure by Letters Patente The arrangement, within the chamber K, of the conical split packing-rings e f, Hang'ed follower g, and spring y d, as herein shown and described. Y
