GEORGE B. SHERWOOD, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 12, 1906.
Application filed February 1, 1906. Serial No. 299,023. 7
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. Snnnwoon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks, of which the following is a s ecification.
The object 0 this invention is to provide a simple and improved nut-lock.
In the practical embodiment of the invention it is designed that a nut-lock constructed in accordance therewith be adapted to positively couple a nut with the bolt upon which it is screwed in such a way as to entirely obviate likelihood of displacement of said nut.
The nut-lock further is designed to be of as cheap a construction as possible and admitting of quick application thereof or detachment in the practical 'use of the device.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for eflecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a nut-lock embodying the inventionapplied. Fig. 2 is a vertical section. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the nut-lock member alone. Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the lock member with its terminals bent at an angle thereto.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the followin description and indicated in all the views 0 the drawings by the same reference characters.
In the drawings the numeral 1 designates a bolt, and the numeral 2 a nut adapted to be screwed thereon. The invention is of the type of nut-locks using a longitudinally-slotted bolt and a lock member coacting with the nut and arranged to engage in the slot of the bolt to prevent turning of said nut. The slot of the bolt is indicated at 3 and extends from the outermost extremity of the threaded portion of said bolt. The lock member comprising the essential feature of the invention is of a peculiar form, being made of a single length of wire bent u on itself to form an approximately circular ody 4, from which the terminals of the wire extend laterally, the terminal 5 being longer than the terminal 6. The body 4 of the lock member is adapted to receive the threaded portion of the bolt previous to screwing the nut in place thereon. After the nut has been screwed in place and hard against the outer side of the body 4 the terminals 5 and 6 are bent at approximately a right angle to the body 4 and against a side of the nut 2 to positively engage the latter. The lock member is fixed from rotation by bending the long terminal 5 toward the outer side of the nut 2 and into the slot 3 of bolt 1. The body 4 of the lock member, the terminal 6, and that portion of the terminal 5 which is in contact with the terminal 6 are flattened. This structure admits of screwing the nut hard against the outer surface of the body 4 to secure a maximum degree of frictional contact, and, further, the flattening of the terminal portions 5 and 6 facilitates bending thereof at a right angle, as shown in Fig. 1, so as to engage with a side of the nut as hereinbefore specified. In other words, the flattening of the terminals 5 and 6 makes the same more flexible, with advantages above premised upon. It is obvious that in actual manufacture of the lock member the same may be cut and flattened in the same opera' tion, this chea ening its cost in a manner which will be 0 vious.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is In a nut-lock, the combination of a bolt provided with a slot leading from the outer extremity of its threaded portion, a nut screwed upon the bolt, and a lock member for said nut comprising a single length of wire bent to form an approximately round body from which the terminals of the wire extend laterally, one of the terminals bein longer than the other, both of the termina s being bent at a right angle to the body to engage a side of the nut, the outer end portion of the longer terminal being bent against the outer side of the nut and into the slot of the bolt to prevent rotation of the locking member, the body of the locking member and the shorter terminal being flattened, the portion of the longer terminal in contact with the shorter terminal being also flattened.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
