Appeals@ nu n1, rz, isos. Bumm. 270.502.
i To all whom. t may concern:
-Williinsburg in the vcounty of Allegheny,
State oi Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Tape accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a nut-tapping machine, and particularly to a structure adapted to eieot an automatic feed and delivery of the nuts therefrom.
The invention has for an ob 'ect to provide an improved construction an arrangement of the tap by which the same issu ported and heid bythe nuts fed thereon ater the tapping o eration and delivered from the opposite en of the tap. i
A further object of the invention is to proment of a pusher adapted to coperate with said tap in its reeiprooatory movement to permit the nut to be de osited in alinernentv with the ta p and there he d during the threading operation. Y
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved arrangement. of shaker in the feed-trough by which the nuts received fro m the hopper shell be presented tothe tsp in proper position to secure the most'efieient,
results.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined bythe appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side eievation with parts in section; Fig. 2, an enlarged section of the tap and pusher mechanisms; Y
Fig. 3, en end view' of the machine with the -hopper and standard removed; Fig. 4, a pian of the shaker mechanism; Fig. 5, a vertical soutien through the holdin -pawlsg Fig. 6, a detail perspective of the e lute for the nuthlanlis, and Fig. 7 a detail plan of the holding-pawi and tapping-chamber with the pusher removed.
Like letters of reference referto like 'parts in the several figures of the drawings. The letter A designates the frame of the nmehine, which may bo of anr desired construction or eoniiguration suitable for the purpose, ind is provided with a vertical "'hel'dhy the pusher.
standard A", adapted to support at its upper 'ende feed-hopper A, within which the nut hlanksr'fto beta pod or threaded are con tained, Upon iis base A a head A is mounted and provided with a slidewsy within which e pusher B is disposed. This pusher is provided with s recess or opening extendin therethrough, as shown at B', to permit t e discharge of chips from the threading operetiOn, and is governed in its movement by the cam B', mounted upon e shhft B in the head A, this cam being ade ted, to Vengage with the lever B, pivotallly mounted 1n the head st -B and provided at its iower lportion with a. hardened frietionroller Bj, adapted to be supported in position bV the threaded shank B1 thereof.
Thisy ro ler is-normally held in Contact with -throu h which the nuts descend, and to sup# port t e blanks therein while holding oneof the blenksA in position for the threading operation.` When the ,usher is retracted, another blank is allows to fall in osition, whereit is held in the tapping-chamer D by means of the oppositel disposed pawls D, each of which is provided with a point D2, .against which the blank being threaded is The subsequent movement of this pusher forces these pawls inward and allows the nut t0 travel upon the shank of the tap E after tronvelinr ,over the threaded end E thereof. The pani-ls are held in position in any desired manner-for in,- stance, byvmeans of a spring D, bearing upon the heed Ds of the pawi and held in position b a elosingeerew D, as shown in Fig. 5. The tappingrhamber is also provided at its end fece with a slot or wa D1 to permit the discharge of nniterial o chips collecting therein. The body of the pawl is preferably angular in oonfi uration and fits s siniiar rocess inthe wal s of this chamber, so as to T is usher at its forward end is odapt- Y xo tion C for the same.j urpose.
keep the point D thereof proper position to engage the blank.
The chute or trough C is preferablylforlned open at the front, as shownl C', w ich permits aready ins ection of the blanks travelmechanism F-for the purpose of introducing r 5 the blanks'into the tro'ugh. This shaker is rovided with an enlar ed open portion at its upper ond, into whic -the nuts are introduced bythe feeder G from the` hopper, and is also provided with a wall F thereof, i ivzo oted at itslower end and rovided wit i an z 5 vibrati 3o with a depen 3 5 their sides parallel to the wal arm F, carrying a'sprin connected 'to a fixed A'bracket F', 'as -sho eausesfthe -Inovablefrall to n `toward the fixedwall. v For the-` urpose of this movablewall a` aft F is niounte upon the upper face ofthe chamber Y *and provided at its outer end with a driving- J pulley F, having upTon the hub thereof a se` ries of strikerpins adaapted -to cotperate A ng finger 1, carried y the arm F, extending from the movable wall of the shaker. The result of this motion isto.
constantly vibratethe Wall F2, thus causinU the blanks to be fed in a sin le 'series with lzand insures a feed thereof 1n proper position through the trough C.
The blanks may be fed directly into this shaker; but preferably the hopper is connect- ,4o ed therewith by means of the rotatable feeding-c linder G, provided interiorly with a.V
spira path or way, preferably `formed ofeoiled wire, and .at its upper end is provided with a roller-bearing G within the lower end G of the hopper, this bearing being secured in position by means of the threaded bearing G, as shown by section in Fig. 1. The feeding-cylinder is rotated by means of a gear G, mounted thereon and meshin with a cop- 5o eratin gear G, having its Sha t journaled 1n a brac 'et A5,extending outward'from the standard.
The partshereinbefore described may be driven in any desired manner-for instance,
5 5 by means of the driving-shaft 1I, provided at one cnd with a pulley Il', belted at 1l3 to a stepped cone H3, mounted upon a1 deliveryshaft I, which carries at its inner end the tap E. This driving-shaft ll is also provided 6o with a friction-wheel K, cooperating with a similar wheel K', mounted upon a cross-shaft T l at thc base of the machine, which shaft is provided with a dri ving-pulley Il, from which a belt ll extends to a suitable` dri vingane ulley H upon the shaftof the cam B2, be-
ore described. The opposite end of the shaft of this cani is also )rovided with a driving-pulley H, from which a belt Il extendsto a pulley F upon the shaft of the shaker. This cani-shaft has at its op osite Yend a second driving-pulley J, from w iich a belt J extends upward to the driving-pulley J", disposed upon the shaft of the gear G" for rotating the feeder.
The tap E is provided intermediate of its opposite ends with portions E2, deflected at opposite sides of a line extending between said ends, and this deflected portion of the tap, in -connection with the completed n ut traveling thereon, serves to hold the ta against an longitudinal thrust in either d1- rection an also against slip ing within the holder I' thereof,.as Athe deiljeeted or crank portion, with the nuts disposed thereon, (shownin Fig. 2,) serves to counteract. any rotative motion of the shaft relative to this with the nuts thereon in proper-position for holding it in action. The nuts in their lon itudinal travel over the ta -shank are fina ly dischar ed at the end 3 thereof and are forced y contact with each other. through the delivery-shaft I, mounted in suitable bearings I5 and discharged from the open end 1, where they can be received in any suitable receptacle. A
In the operation of this invention when it is desired to start the machine several nuts are disposed upon the shank within its holder, so as to retain the shank in position and the driving mechanism then started. The nuts are thus fed from the hopper or Imagazine through the tubular feeder and dischar ed into the shaker at the upper end of Vthe c nite. This shaker insures the passage of the nuts into the chute upon their flat sides, so a's to fall on edge between the ta and the pusher,l they beingheldin this position by the oppositely-disposcd pawls in the tapping-chamber. he pusher in its movement then brings the nut-blank into contact with the tap and continues'its pressure until the tap has passed through the nut and thc latter passes from the theadedportion of the tap onto its shank. At this time thv pusher lies beneath thc nuts and the chnlr, thus .snpporting them in position, and the rhips` from the tapping operation 'mss through ilw aperture in tllcpushcr.
