HENRY F. BECHMAN, OF BATTLE CREEK, MICl-HGAN, ASSIGNR-TO DU- PLEX PRINIING -PRESS COMPANY,
MEANS FOR maremma To all 1.0721071?, 1725 7a2/tgl! concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY F. BnoHMAN, of Battle Creek, in the county of Calhoun and State of h/Iichigamhave invented certain neu7 and useful Improvements in. Means for Fastening Plates to Cylinders and l hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the 'vcompanying drawings, which form part of this' spczliication.
This invention relates to rotary-cylinder printing-presses-and has particular reference to the platecylinders thereof; and vit conin novel means for attaching or fastening the stereotype or other curvedgplate printin -surfaces to the peripheries of the platecy inders.
Theinvention is particularly adapted 'to'4 cylinders carrying al multiplicity of plates,.- such as four-page-Wide cylinders; and its objects are toenable each plate to be securely fastened thereto in an expeditious manner, the inner plates being secured first and the idevices forl operating the clamps for the outer plates being utilized as the means for operating the clamps for the inner plates, the clutch betWeenthe tWo devices being disconnectible, so that the fastening orunfastening 0f the outer plates does not affect the fastening ofthe inner plates.
The invention Will `beelearly understood from the accompanying drawings and the following'description, and the features for which protection is desired are stated in the claims appended hereto.
The said drawings illustrate the invention as applied to a four-page-Wide plate-cylinder of a newspaper printing-press, Figure 1 being a side elevation of part of a four-page- Wide plate-c X-*linder of a rotary printingn press, provided With my novel plateclamp ing devices. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail plan view of the plate-clamping devices. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on line 3 3, Fig. 2,' and Fig. 4 is a transversa- Jtion on line 4 4, Fig. 2.
lrlhe plate-cylinder' A lis provided With a central annularrib a, undercut on its sides to engage and retain the inner beveled edges of stereotype-plates S or other printing-surfaces of ordinary formation. The cylinder is also provided with a series of parallel longitudinal slots B in its periphery, extending from its outer end toward the central rib, these slots Specification of Letters Patent. cir outer portions or ery of the cylinder. The h and retain the edges ofv adjacent `sterotypeplates S on each side thereof, as shown in be undercut on theirv inner edgesJ-as theyengage only the outer edges .of the.v outermost platesS-` Each clamp C is transiiXed bya threaded rodV E, which is arranged Within the slot B inner end into a bearing and is stepped at its e at the inner end-of slot B, and near its outer end rod E is supported in a bridge-piece E', secured Within and across,l the slot B, as shoWn, rod E having a collar el on it at the inner side of bridge-piece E, which permits the rod E to be rotated, but prevents longitudinal movement thereof. Obviously the rotation of rod E will cause clamp C ,to travel along the'rod in slotB. The clampD is similarly transiixed by a threaded rod F, the inner end of Which is preferably-steppedinto and the outer end of cent to bridge-piece E',
bridge-piece f in the rod ,F extends through though it can be readily rotated :by a Wrench or other manipulating device applied to its squared outer end F 3, Which projects slightly beyond the face of the outer end of the cylinder. The adjacent ends of the rods or rodsections E and F are both squared, as shown at E2 F2, the squared part F2 of rod F being longest, and yon this partis placed a loose sleeve G, Whose bore is shaped to fit the squared part of the rods. When sleeve G is -moved outWard,`so as to be entirelyon rod F, the latter can be rotated Without aecting rod E; but vhen sleeve G is moved inward, so as to also engage part E2 of rod E, as indicated in dotted lines G2, it forms a clutch Vone cannot be turned Without the other, and therefore by rotating rod F rod E Will be rotated also. Thus clamp C can be shifted baci; or forth by slide in the outer end of rod E, as shown'at F, adja:v
outer end of the slot B, a collerfl on the rod- F preventing it moving `.longitudinally, al.
connection between the tWo rods E F, so that` to retain and Aefuide the D, the former eingthe` heads c. d project slightly beyond the periph,-
eadsc or clamps C are undercut on both sides, soas to engage v Fig. l While the heads d of clamp D needonly rotating rods F whenv coupled ioigether, moved bach out el' engagement with iod lC the clamp l) can be adjusted by rotating rod l without all'ecting clamp Operation: `When plates S are to be se- .1 il, to the cylinder, the sleeves Gr are so as to engage n torod-sections(l. rl`l1en therods are i. l ti: bach clamps (l outward until the pli. is ifi can be placed on the cylinder between rib it and clamps (l. Then rods E F are turned so as to move clamps C up against the outer edge ol the inner plates S and secure the latter in place. The operator then diseneages sleeves G lroni'rods E by slippingr the sleeves outward by hand. and then backs clamps i) outward by' rotatingv rods l11 (sections 'ill remaining una'll'ected) until the outer plates S canbe nlaced on the cylinder be tween )clamps (l and D. rl`hen the clamps D are movi` 'l inward until they bind the plates between i ein and clamps C, as shown in Fig. l, and the.I opei tion is completed. When the o'iiter mates S. are in position, the sleeves 'i are covert-2d, so that it is necessary to reniove said plates betere sleeves G can be shifted,
From the 'foregoing it 'will be noted that the clamps are virtually operated by a sectional rod, one part el" which may be locked or unlocked from the other by means of,
clutches or clamps of simple construction;
that this,l device avoids the necessity for indeclamp, said rods beingi in alinement and the pi'indent slots in the cylinder for the inner and outer clamps and dispenses with separate operating mechanism for the inner clam ps. Thus the strength ofv the cylinder is enhanced, less i'ij'ieiativc parts are re quired, and the clainpopiirating deviceU re more compact, and ali clamps can tively adjusted and remain locked when ad jimrui by the scie.w-iods. Also the clamps can be operated from the end of the cylinder, lwhich is the most convenient and accessible place .for using the manipulating tool or wrench. 0in' iouslyx also,tl1e invention is not and when. sleeve (i is j n the specijlic number ol clamps and rod-seci'od-sei'tions F1 and be posiu restricted to the specific sleeve-clutch nor to tions shown in the drawings,
Having 'thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure b Letters Patent, is-
i. .ln combination a plate-cylinder havingr slots, rods in said slots, diseoimectible connection between the ends ot adjacent rods7 and plate-clainjis in said slots respectively actuated by the rods.
2. In combination with a plate-cylinder having longitudinal slots, of alined threaded rod-sections in said slots, an operative connection between the ends of adjacent seetions, and plate-clamps in saidv slots respectively transiixed by the rod-sections, whereby the several clamps may be adjusted.
3. ln combination a plate-cylinder having a longitudinal slot, a set of plate-elainps in said slot n'iovable longitudinally thereof, a threaded rod-section transiixing each clamp, said sections being in alinernent, and rotatable biit longitudinally immovable in the slot, and a longitudinally-inovable member on the end ot one section adapted 'to be slipped. endwise to engage the end of the adjacent section and lock the sections together.
4. The'combination of a plate-cylinder having longitudinal slots, and a set of plateclamps in said slot movable longitudinally thereof; with a rotatable but longitndinallyimmovable threaded rod translixing each adjacent ends ot said rods being; squared, and a longitudinally movable sleeve on the squared end of one rod adapted to .be slipped endwise thereon to engage or disengage the squared end of' the adjacent rod.
ln testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own l. allix my signature 1n presence o two Witnesses.
HENRY F. BECHMAN. In presence of- Aa'rnini G. STERLING, Farin W. DUNNING.
