UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 12, 1906.
Application filed July 3, 1905. Serial No. 268,226.
T aZZ whom it may concern/f Be it known that I, WILLIAM ARMSTRONG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Side Attachments for Awnings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in side attachments for awnings; and it consists of the novel arrangement, construction, and combination of parts, as will be fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of my invention is to construct a device to be located at the side of an awning and to operate simultaneously with the folding and unfolding of the awning.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention shown in connection with an awning. Fig. 2 is a side view with the awning-supporting folds in sections. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view, with parts broken away, showing the manner in which the cord for operating the sides is connected.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 4 indicates an ordinary awning having its free end connected to the supporting-pole 5 and its other end to the roller-bar 6. On each side of the awning is located the sides 7, which consist of a framework having three extending arms 8, each being pivotally secured to a casting 9, and the outer ends of the arms 8 are provided with openings through which a cord 10 is adapted to be passed. The casting 9 is pivotally secured to a bracket 11, which supports the side rod 12 of the awning proper. To the arms 8is secured a canvas 13, which is held to said arms by strips 14, forming pockets. The strips 14 are stitched to the canvas 13, as shown in Fig. 2. The end 15 of the canvas is preferabl tacked to the window-casing, and the end 16 is attached to the side rod 12 by means ofapocket 17. The cord 10 is passed through the ends of the various arms 8, one end thereof being fastened to the roller-bar 6 and the other end to the supporting-pole 5. Upon the roller-bar 6 is provided flanges 18, which act as a guide for the cord 10 when the same is being wound by folding the awning and the sides. Upon the ends of the pole 5 and roller-bar 6 and located outside of the sides 7 I provide a strip 19, the
purpose of which is to support the sides and prevent lateral movement. The awning and sides are operated by the usual operating mechanism, consisting of the sprocket-chain 20 and winding mechanism 21.
The 0 eration of my invention is as follows: ter attaching the sides to the awning by tacking one side thereof to the window-casing and the other to the rod 12 and the casting 9 to the bracket 11 the operator manipulates the operating mechanism by either folding or unfolding the same, as desired. In folding the device the cord 10 will wind upon the roller-bar 6 between the flanges 18, and as the awning sides are gradually folding the arms 8 will in turn come together and fold in a manner similar to a fan.
By a device of this construction it will dispense with the methods now used in applying sides to the awnings, which has been found necessary at the present time to remove the same when folding up the awnings. This invention is at all times ready and remains in position and will operate simultaneously with the folding and unfolding of the awnmg.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure to me by the grant of Letters Patent, is
1. A side attachment for awnings, comprising a plurality of arms pivotally connected to a casting, a canvas attached to said arms, a cord passing through the ends of said arms, a roller-bar, a supporting-pole, the ends of said cord being attached to the supporting-pole and the roller-bar for the purpose of folding and unfolding simultaneously with the operation of the awning-and a suitable guide formed on the roller-bar to guide the cord, substantially as specified.
2. A device of the class described comprising an awning, a roller-bar for winding up the awning, a supporting-pole for supporting the outer end of the awning, a frame comprising a plurality of arms, a casting pivotally connected to the window-casing, said casting pivotally securing the arms of the frame, a canvas mounted upon the frame and supported to each arm by a pocket, said ame operating in slots formed in the awning, a cord connected to the roller-bar and to the sup orting-pole and passing through the ends of t e arms ofthe frame, a guide formed on the roller-bar for guiding the cord When the same is Wound upon the bar to simultaneously fold the mine With the Winding up of the awning, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in presence of tWO subscribing Witnesses.
WILLIAM ARMSTRONG.
