Be it known that I, HARRY DEL Man, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Im roveinent in Water-Tube Boilers, of which t e following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in water-tube boilers, and particularly to that class of boilers that consists of series of vertically-arranged rows of tubes, adjacent series being at an angle to each other and oppositelyinclined between sets of headers that form the sides of the boiler.
The object of the invention is to provide the headers with openings for the tubes so as to arrange the tubes in a sta gered way, and the headers are arranged to Face one another diagonally-that is, an u per header on one side faces the correspon ing header on the lower tier of the other side.
Another object of the invention is to utilize the space immediately above the lower part of a series of tubes runnin from header to header by inserting a set o tubes to establish communication between the upper header and the steam-drum. Y
This boiler also provides a feed-drum on each end of each series of headers to receive the return from the steam-drum and distribute it to the headers.
With these ends in view my invention consists of certain combinations that will be hereinafter described and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim` Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar {igures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side View of the boiler with the steam-drum and mud-drums in section. Fig. 2 is a partial view in section of the boiler on line 2 2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan ol the boiler with a part of the steam-drum removed; and Fig. 4 is a section of the tubes of one oi the headers, showing the header in elevation.
In the `drawings, 1() is the usual steamdrum, connected by the pi es 11 with the tops of the headers 12. 'Fliese headers are arranged as shown particularly in Fi s. 2 and 3, being staggered by the distance etween two rows of tubes, thus bringing the headers of `an upper tier exactly facing the header of the lower tier on the opposite sides. The tubes 13 are arranged in rows and run diagonally across from header to header. The upper headers in the space downwardly-sloping tubes running to the lower headers are connected by the tubes la with the steam-drum.
Each lower header on the front of the boiler is provided with tube-openings for the tubes 15, which communicate with the headers on the back end, which are longer. This provides a set of tubes approachin the grate on the back end and receiving the ull benefit of the fire. The feed-headers 16 at the four corners of the boiler are fed by the pipes 17 from the steam-drum and return the cooler water to the headers 12 by means of the muddrum 18 and the pipes 19. The opposed feed-drums are connected by the equahzingpipes 20 to create an even distribution of water. The headers are provided on their outer faces with openings 21, having caps, the openings aldording entrance for expanding tubes, cleaners, and the like.

It will be obvious that the boiler on these lines will be an economical and simple boiler. It will also be seen that by using headers having the three rows of tubes to a header instead oi the ordinary arrangement with one row of tubes to a header I not only get the staggered effect of the tubes, but tubes will come where a joint would ap ear if the ordinary headers having one row oiP tubes were used. Thus I get additional heating space and simpler construction.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A boiler consisting of a steam-drum, tiers of headers connected with the steamdrum and arranged diagonally o posite and side by side, rows of diagonal arranged tubes connecting each header with the diagonally-opposed header, and rows of tubes arranged to connect the lower front headers with the lower rear headers between the firstmentioned rows of tubes.

A water-tube steam-boiler comprising a steam-drum, tiers of headers arranged diagonally opposite and side by side, rows of diagonally-arranged tubes connecting each header with the dlagonally-opposed header, muddrums, connections between the lower headers and the mud-drums, and rows of tubes connecting the headers on opposite sides of the steam-drum with the said steam-drum, the said rows of tubes being arranged between the rows eonneotin the headers.
