SKIRT MEASURER AND PATTERN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 5, 1906.
Application Sled October 16, 1905. Serial No. 283,068.
To @ZZ whom it may concern: i
Be it known that I, J Ennis GTIGHT, acitizen of the United States, residing at St. Anthony, in the county of Marshall and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirt Measurers and Patterns, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved skirt measurer and pattern, and has for its object the provision of a device which may be applied directly to the person for securin the measure and form of the skirt desired. the device is applied to the person the goods from which the skirt is to be cut are attached directly to the measuring device. Then the device may be laid Hat upon a table and the material from which the skirt is to be formed, cut, or trimmed, using the device as a pattern. As the dimensions and form of the person are thus accurately determined, the necessity for fitting the skirt to the person is obviated.
With these objects in view the invention consists of a flexible device comprising measuring-strips connected so that the size and form of the device may be extended or contracted and also provided with means lfor hanging or draping the material from which the skirt is to be formed on the person.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one example of the complete physical embodiment of my invention, wherein- Figure 1 is a view of the device applied for use. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the invention. Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing two plates or strips in section and the fastening means therefor. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of an extensiblejoint between two plates, and Fig. 5 is a sectional view of a pivoted joint between two plates or strips.
The device consists, essentially, of the upper or waist section i, the bottom or lower member 2, the front section 3, which connects the upper and lower sections and is to be applied or used as the front measurement of the skirt, the rear section 4, and the two side or hip sections 5 6. These sections are all preferably constructed of metal-such as brass, white-metal, or aluminiurn-and are connected in such manner that the device as a whole may be made to assume and accurately measure and furnish a pattern for any desired size and form. or'skirt. Each of the outside sections is or may be provided with a scale, preferably in inches. At the four joints of the Waist, front, rear, and bottom sections, a rivet, as 7 8 9 l0, is provided to connect the members, and these rivets form loose pivots for the joints to turn on. The two side or hip sections are also pivoted, as at 11 11, to the waist-section.
To render the device ilexible and capable of easy manipulation in adapting the same in use, the sections are preferably made up of short plates or strips, as 1, 2', 3', e', 5', and 6', and in all instances, with exceptions, as will be noted, these plates or strips are ada ted to be fastened to ether with adetachable joint comprisinga ba l 12 and socket-joint 13, as illustrated clearly in Fig. 3. Preferably a number of balls 12 are provided a teach joint, so that the length of the sections, consisting of these strips, may be extended or contracted at will byusin one or the other of the balls 12.
The side or hip sections 5 and 6 are preferably slotted at their lower ends, as at 5 and 6, respectively, and at the point of juncture of these two members or sections with the bottom section said section is provided with slots 2l and 2b, respectively, and these vertical and longitudinal slots have the set-screws 14 passed therethrough, which enga e nuts l5. Thus it will be seen that the si e or hip members may be moved to or from each other, and the bottom section may be brought nearer to or farther from the upper or waist section, and the movable attachment means in the front, rear, and side sections allows an extension or contraction of these members.
The upper or waist section, the lower or bottom section, and, if desired, the front and rear sections may be provided with pins or sharp hooks 16, over which the material for the skirt may be hung or draped.
It will be understood that the number of lates or strips comprising the sections may be increased, and the number of tem orary I oints of attachment or fasteners may lie also increased, if found desirable.
In using the device the section 3 is held to the person at the front center and then the device carried around to the rear until the back section 4 is at the rear center, the upper and lower sections are adjusted for the circumferential measurements and form, and then the front and rear sections are adjusted for the height of the skirt. The skirt material is then draped or hunr over the hooks 16 on the device, and the device, with the mateterial thereon, is taken from the person,

spread out flat, and the cutting or trimming is proceeded with, thus producing the sections of the skirt ready for sewing together.
Havin thus fully described my inventionA what I clgaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A device of the character described ca pable of adaptation as to form and size on a person, and provided with means for temporarily securini the material from which the garment is to e cut.
2. A device of the character described consisting of a Waist-section and a bottom section,` extensible sections connecting the same7 and means for temporarily securin the materia] from which the skirt is to be ashioned.
3. A device of the character described consisting of a Waist-section, a bottom section,
and front, side and rear sections connecting the same7 all of said sections being extensible, and means on the device for securing the material from which the skirt is to be cut.
4. A device of the character described consistng of a Waist-section, a bottom section, and front, side and rear sections connecting the same, all of said sections being extensible, and pins on some of the sections for securing the material from which the skirt is to be fashioned.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
