To @Z whom it may concern.:
Be it known that l, JAMES U. DAWSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident ol." lNehster Groves, county ci St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have invented. certain new and useful linproveinents in Loose Leaf Binders, of which the following is a speciication and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The invention relates to that class of e5;- pansihle loose-leaf binders which comprise a hack section and a pair of laterally-movable side or clamping sections in sliding engagement with the baclf. section, telescoping leafcarrying posts, and means for expanding and contracting the hinder. its object is to in# crease the eiliciency of devicesl of this type; and it consists ci the structure hereinafter describes and which is illustrated. in the accoii'ipanying drawings, in whichligure l is a plan view of the hinder. Fig. 2 is fzlnngitudinal section thereof on the line 2 oi' Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a similar view to llig. l., the binder being open. Figs. Ll and 5 are crosssectious on the .lines a e and E 5, re spectively, ol Fig. 3; and Fig. 6 is a detail. ol: one of the parts.
The hack plate l() and the side members ll The former is provided with upturned end flanges 13 l4, and each of the latter consists of two leaves, one constituting the clamping or side plate and the other a portion 'of the hack of the hinder. A cross-plate 'l5 16 is attached vto the inner face of the hack plate l0 adjacent each of its ends, the ends ot such platesbeing spa-eed apart from the hack plate to provide therewith guideways for the back leaves of the side plates il and l2, and such. plates are also spaced apart 'from the upturned ends 13 le oi' the back plate to accommodate the upturned and iiiistanding ends 1.7 18 olt the side members. l
The leaf-holding rods comprise the telescoping members 19 and 20, one set in. each of y,the side members. A pair of. anchor bloc-lis 2l 22 is secured to the inner face of the hack riember l() in any desired manner, :is shown by means of screws 23 24, and to each of these anchorbloelis is pivoted a pair of vers 25 26 27 28each of which is longitudinelly. slotted near its outer-end, as shown at or" a cross-head 3l 32, the
29, to receive a 3G, set in the side member, l?.
Eaeh pair of leversV is controlled. by means ends of which are slotted parallel with the loaclr plate 10 to re-u ceive the levers and are cormected therewith hynieans oi2 pins 33, set through obhqueslots 34 in the levers. Tie body of each of the cross-heads 31 32 forms a nut wliieh is lin threaded. eneagement with. a right and left threaded 35, ourneled in brackets 36 3 7 risingironi the plates l5 16, respectively, an in the present instance passing loosely through the anchor-blocks 2l 22. @ne end: of the .rod is squared, as shown at 38, for the engagement of a lrey 39, inserted through an aperture el() in one of the upturned ends,
l3, of the hack plate.
lViren the cross-heads 3l 32 are inv the posi tion shown in l, with the pins 33 atthe outer ends of the slots 341 o the levers, the binder is' in its contrasted form. 'llhe rotation oi' the rod 35 to .move the cross-heads toward the anchor-blocks 2l 22 throws the le-1 vers outwardly the pins move along the slots Se, and 'the 1oinder is thereby expanded to the position shown in Fig. 9, the action heing accelerated by the ohliqueposition of the 8o lever-slots the binder, power is applied to the levers at the point nearest to their pivots, while as the sides move inwardly the Ypoint of apolioation inasmuch as in contri-Lotingl of power gradually recedes from suc pivots, 8 5
the closing action becomes gradually slower,
While the compressive power of the sides grad ually increasesr T his arrangement provides 'tor a quick action at the commencement or the closing of the hinder, with a constant ac- 9o `celeration of power.
l claim as my invention l. ln a loose-leaf binder, in combination, a back member; a pair or laterally-movable side members g a pair of levers independentl" 9 5' pivoted to the back member and each sli ingly engaging one of the side members; and a movable cross-head slidingly engaging the levers.
Z. ln a loose-leal hinder, 'in combination, a roo .side membes; and a. movable cross-headn k side members; paifof obliquely-slotvced 1eengagenlent with the evenslots. Vers independently pivoted to the back mem- 3. In a1oose-1eafbnder,in combination, a bel" and each sldingly engaging one of the 15 beek member; e pair of lateraly-movable l sdemembers; across-head in engagement side .ln-embers; e. pair of levers independentl with the 'lever-slots; and 'a rod journaled in pveted to the back member sind each szlig the beek member and in threaded engageingly engagn one of the side members; a ment with the cross-head. cross-heed sli ngly engaging the levers; and
a 1nd jenlneed in che beek membe and in I JAMES C' DAWSON' 'tbl'eegied 'engagement mth the cross-head. /Vxtnesses: 4
