Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 5, 1906.
sylvania, have invented certain new and u'se-.
ful Improvements in Copying-Machines, of which the following is a specification;
My invention-relates to that class of copying devices employing an absorbent pad compose principally of glue, glycerin, and molasses, to
. the
which an impression from a master-copy may be transferred by causing the copy to remain for a few minutes in contact wit the face of the ad, which may then be employed for repro ucing a large number of copies.
My improvements embody novel features in the construction of the copying-pad, together with novel devices employed to operate the pad to produce uniform and rapid Work.
The nature of my improvements will be more fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- I Flgure 1 illustrates a perspective view of the copyin -pad detached from the cylinder of the mac e, a portion being broken away to enable the wire-gauze support to be seen. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a copying-press embodying all is a longitudinal section of the same, the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
In carrying outmy structthe pad A by fastening a strip of .wiregauze A between the four end pieces A -A of my improvements; andFi g. 3 taken on which are recessed adjacent to the gauze to receive and lock in place a layer of co g, material, and having fastenedthese t d tlie bottom of a shallow tray I proceed to pour in the melted material which 1s to form the upper and lower surfaces of the pad. When cool, the surfaces are evenly trimmed off and adv is ready for use. The machine to whic this ad is especially adapted consists of a cylin er B, mounted on a shaft B, which isjournaled in side frames 0 C, fastened at the bottom to abase C and at the tog to a table C he cylinder B is provided with springinvention 1 first con-.
pins 1) 71, adapted to register with openings 0. a in the end pieces of the pad to detachably hold the pad in position around the cylinder. Above the cyhnder B are two rollers D and E, having shafts D and E, which, like the cylinder B, are journaled in the side frames 0 and are geared together and .to the shaft B of the cylinder B by a train of caring comprising spur-vvheels B, D, and mounted, res ectively, on the shafts B, D, and E.
he roller D, which I term a presserroller, serves topress the sheet of paper fed from the table C against the pad A on the with the roller D, serves to feed the sheet of paper away from the pad after it has received an impression therefrom.
In order to guide the pa er into the path of the rollers D and E, T emp 0y a switch-bar F, which may be adjusted so as to barely clear the surface of the cylinder, and thus catch and guide the paper as it passes between the roller D and the ad A. p
The cylinder g and its pad is intended to be manually operated by a crank G, which is fastened to the outer end of the shaft BC Having described my invention, what cm, is
1. ing a strip of wire-gauze, end ieces provided with. recesses to receive and hold copyin material, and ,a layer of copying materia passing through and covering both sides of the gauze, substantially as specified.
2. A cop ing-mazhinc comprising a rotatable cylin er, s
inder, a detacha le pad provided atits ends with openings to engage the sprin -pins; a roller in engagement wlth the cylin er and a second roller in engagement with the firstmentioned roller, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. I
