STEPHEN MOLTRUP, OF BEAVER FALLS, PENNSYLVANIA I METALLIC POST." I i Patented May 29, 1 906.
Application filed November 30,1904. Renewed November- 2,1905. Serial No. 285,669.
1'0 all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, STEPHEN MOLTRUP, of
havein-vented a new and useful Metallic Post, of which the following is .a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation showing a preferred form of my metallic post. Fig. 2 is a partial vertical section of the same, and
I Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line III III of Fig. 2.
My inverition relates to the class of hollow metallic posts'or poles, and is designed to provide a simple structure which may be easily and cheaplymade and which will give great resistance against lateral strains.
In the drawings I show a post havin a tapering body which is substantially circu ar in cross-section and formed of two outer tapering spirally-wound, fiat steel stri s 2 and two inner ta ering spirally-wound at steel strips 3, whic are wound in the opposite directionthatis, two strips are wound in a right-hand spiral-and the other strips wound in a left-hand spiral, so that the spirals cross each other, preferably at each convolution: The outer spirals are wound of slightlyreater diameter than the inner. spirals, and etween them are placed the vertically-ex- Y tending flat strips 4. have shown the verti'cal strips as four in number, though they may be of any desired number. The several strips are secured together by rivets 5, and the vertical strips are preferably posit oned;
at the crossings of the spiral-strips, so that -a sin is rivet secures the three thicknesses firm together at each crossing-point.'-'=5By positioning .the've'rti'cal str'ipsat. thecrossiri points of the spirals I thusf provide'a s mp e and strongstructure,whichfwill-present great resistance to lateral'strains of pressure. i The top and bottomfinishof the post or'po'lemay be of any desired form.- I have shownan. or-
nament'al top cap 6 inthe lform of a" hollow casting with the cndsofthespirals' and the cndsof-thc vcrtical strips riveted through it. at 7, as' shown in'l ig. 2;. Ialso preferably rovide a base consisting-of 'a pipe-casting 8,
aving a reduced upper ixortioni9, Whieh'eX tends upwardly within t eilower port on of the; hollow skeleton body. {The lower ends,
of the spirals aiid verticalstrips inay be riv etcd at their crossmg-pomts to ,a ring 10, which is f0IU0(l-;0VGI a shoulder on the base j tially as described.
portion between the lower up er reduced portion. v
he advantages of my invention result from the use of the flat strips-wiwnd in opposite portion and the spirals and riveted together at the crossing-- points and, further, from the use of the fiat vertical stri s which are riveted to the s irals, prefera ly at their crossing-points. T e
vertical strips may be placed outside or inside the spiral structure instead of between stri s wound in right and left hand helices,
an members extending in alinement with the intersections of said strips, and connected therewith at said intersections; substan- 2. A post or column com rising metal strips wound in right and left and tapering helices, and members extendingin alinement with the intersection'of said strips and connected therewith at said intersections; substantially as described. I
3. A post or column comprising 'metal strips wound in right and left hand haices,
havmgsubstantially equal pitch, and mem-.
vbers extending in alinement with the inter sections of said strips, and connected there at said intersections; substantially as described.
41. Apost or column com rising metal '3 7 strips-wound in right and left and ta erin helices, having substantially equal pitc ari members extending in alinement with the intersec-tions of said strips, and connected there withat 'saidintersections; substantially as I I described. I
A post or colul'lill' .compiising"fi1etal strips wound infri ht and left hand helices,-
havmg substantial y equal itch, and morn-1 bers extending between sai strips in aline-- .ment with the intersections thereof and ri v-. "eted thereto at each intersection; substan jtially'as described.
- .In testimony whereof I have hereunto set- I my hand. I II .I
