Description

PATENTED MAY 22, 1906.
P. F. COHEN. BELT PUNCH AND CUTTER.
APPLICATION IILED DEC. 8. 1905.
WITNESSES:
ATTORNEY.
PATRICK F. COHEN, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
BELT PUNCH AND CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 22, 1906.
Application filed December 8, 1905. Serial No. 290,984.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK F. COHEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belt Punches and Cutters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to Which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The objects of this invention are to provide an implement particularly adapted for the use of engineers when stretching and fitting leather belts upon the pulleys used for the transmission of power, the implement serving as a perforator in the lacing of the belt and a cutter in fitting the belt to the pulleys, and to secure other advantages and results, some of which may be hereinafter referred to in connection with the description of the working parts.
The invention consists in the improved belt perforator and cutter and in the arrange ments and combinations of parts of the same, all substantially as will be hereinafter set forth and finally embraced in the clauses of the claim.
Referrin to the accompanying drawings,
in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the figures, Figure 1 is a plan of the device. Fig. 2 is a side or edge view thereof; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view, on an enlarged scale, the section being taken at line 00.
In said drawings, 5 indicates a handle of wood or other suitable material having a ferrule 6 at one end, through which is inserted the shank 7 of the blade 8. Said blade is of steel sharpened at one edge, as at 9, and in practice I find an inch is suflicient length for said blade to serve my particular purpose.
At the extremity of the blade opposite the shank the steel is longitudinally bent or curved into an approximately tubular form, as at 10, the center axis of the tube lying in line with the blade 8 and the approximately tubular part 10 being open longitudinally, as at 11. One of the edges formed at the longitudinal opening is sharpened, as at 12, so as to cut the leather in the boring operation. The extreme edge 13 of the said tubular part is formed upon spiral lines, as indicated 1n Fig. 2 more clearly, the sharpened edge 12 forming, with the edge 13, a projection 14, adapted to facilitate the insertion of the tubular part through said leather. By having the axis of the approximately tubular part 10 in line with the blade 8 and shank 7, as shown in Fig. 8, I secure a direct pressure of the blade on the tubular part, tending to prevent the blade from breaking at the shank and the direction of the perforation may be more exactly controlled, and I secure a greater strength at the intersection of the blade and tubular part than if the tubular part was disposed at one side of the plane of the blade.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is 1. An article of the kind described, comprising a handle, and a flat blade set thereln, said blade having a sharpened edge, and being bent on its outer end to form a cylindrical portion having a longitudinal slot, the cylindrical portion extending on both sides of the blade and having its free circular edge sharpened.
2. An article of the kind described, com prising a handle, and a flat blade set thereln, said blade having a sharpened edge, and be ing bent on its outer end to form a tapered cylindrical portion having a longltudlnal slot, the cylindrical portion extending on both sides of the blade and having the edges of the slot sharpened, the outer edge of the cylindrical portion being helical and sharpened.
have hereunto set my hand this 1st day of In testimony that I claim the foregoing I
