To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that we, ALBERT R. MEISTER and ALBERT E. WRIGHT, citizens of the United States, residing at Sacramento, in the county of Sacramento and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in VVhiffletrees, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention pertains to whiffletrees, more particularly whiffletrees equipped with means for fastening traces thereon; and it consists in the peculiar and advantageous construction hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim appended.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of so much of a whiffletree as is necessary to illustrate our invention, the same being shown with its button in position to permit of a ready placing of a trace on its ferrule. Fig. 2 is a similar View with the button turned to fasten the trace on the ferrule. Fig. 3 is a section taken in the plane indicated by the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the Whifiietree. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective View of the button, and Fig. 6 is an elevation of the outer end of the ferrule.

Similar letters designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings, referring to which A is a portion of the body of a whiflietree, which is preferably of wood and is provided with a tapered end a, and B is a tapered ferrule, preferably of metal, arranged and secured by any suitable means on the tapered end of the body A. The said ferrule B is provided in its end wall I), as shown in Fig. 3, with a longitudinal central bore 0, having a shoulder d at an intermediate point in its length, and it is also provided in its outer end with a longitudinal groove e of V shape in cross-section and transverse grooves f of similar form in cross section.

C is the button, which is shaped like the outer portion of the ferrule B and is referably of the same kind of material. T e said button is provided on its inner edge With a rib g, designed to seat in the grooves e and f of the ferrule, as shown in Fig. 4 and Fig. 2, respectively, and is also provided with a shank h. This latter is journaled in the bore 0 of the ferrule B and is provided at its inner end with a head or enlargement i, Fig. 5.

D is a coiled spring which surrounds the button-shank and is arranged in the inner comparatively large portion of the bore a and between the shoulder d and the shank-head 'L. The said spring serves to pull the button 0 toward the left, and hence effectually holds said button a ainst casual turning when its rib g is seate either in the groove 6 or the grooves f of the ferrule.

When the button of our improvements is in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 4 relative to the ferrule, it will be observed that the said button forms a smooth continuation of the ferrule, and hence a trace may be ad justed over the button and on the ferrule. When, however, the button is turned to the position shown in Fig. 2, it will obviously preclude casual movement of the trace off the ferrule. With the button in either of the positions stated the spring D, in combination with the rib of the button and the grooves of the ferrule, will effectually prevent shaking, as well as casual movement, of the several parts, and it will also be observed that the shank of the button and the spring will be protected against the weather.

It will be gathered from the foregoing that our novel whiffletree is simple and compact in construction, as well as neat and finished in appearance, and that it iswell adapted to withstand the usage to which whiffletrees are ordinarily subjected.

Having described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
