Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 22, 1906.
To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, GABRIEL GERARDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blackwell, in the county of Kay, Oklahoma Territory, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inDisleSharpeners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in apparatus for holding cut ting-tools for sharpening disks, &c.; and it consists in various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
1 illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of my tool-holding device for holding cutting edges to sharpen disks. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing a single disk held upon the apparatus. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the yoke which carries the cutting edges, and Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are detail views.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings, A and A designate, respectively, two standards which rise from the base A and B designates a shaft mounted in suitable bearings in said standards.
B designates a spindle which has a threaded circumference mounted in threaded bearings in the tubular shell B which is secured to the standard A. A wheel B is fixed to the end of the spindle B and is provided with a handle B. The inner end of the spindle B is tapering and is adapted to engage a socket member B fitted on the threaded portion of the shaft C.
O designates disks which are mounted upon the shaft O and are held frictionally against each other by means of a milled nut C mounted u on athreaded portion of the shaft C. A pinionwheel E is provided, having a hollow-shell hub-section E, which has a bearing in the standard A and is provided with a collar E, which is mounted upon said hollow hub-section and is held against the outer face of the standard A by means of the thumbscrew E"'.
E is a pinion-wheel fixed to the shaft B j and in mesh withthe gear E". A gear-wheel F is also fixed to the shaft B and has a series of cog-teeth F, which are in mesh with the pinionwheel F fixed to the shaft F, which is journaled in the standard A. A handle G is fastened to the shaft F being held thereto by means of a set-screw G and provided to rotate said shaft.
E is a split clamping member having an L-shaped jaw (Z, adapted to receive the head C of the shaft C, and a bolt (1 passes through registering and threaded apertures in the upwardly-projecting portions of said clamping member, whereby the latter may be held frictionally to rotate with the hub-section E.
J designates a curved resilient rod, the upper end of which is turned into aloop J and passes about the shaft B and held thereto by means of a screw or bolt J a sufficient space intervening between the loop and the shaft to allow said rod to move freely thereon. A movable collar 1, having a set-screw I, is mounted upon the curved rod J and has a wing I projecting therefrom which is adapted to engage the base A of the frame to steady said rod. Also mounted upon the curved rod is a clamping member K, a detail of which is illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and through the ends of which passes a screw K, upon which a winged nut K is mounted. Said clamping member K is adapted to be held at different positions upon the rod J and carries a concaved jaw 1 having oppositelydisposed lugs 1 which are apertured, said jaw 1 cooperating with a similar jaw 1, which is concaved, the two forming together a socket for the ball 2 at the end of the rod 3. On said rod 3 is mounted a yoke N, having two bifurcated ends N and in the spaces between the arms of the bifurcated ends are mounted the cutting-knives N, which are held in position by means of thumb-nuts N which are mounted upon screws N. Said rod 3 passes through a central aperture in said yoke, and upon the rod 3 is a milled nut N, which serves to hold the yoke against a fixed collar 7 upon the rod, while at one end of said rod is fixed an antifriction-roller 4, provided for the purpose of contacting with the face of a disk to steady the apparatus while in operation. Suitable handles O and O are fastened to the yoke N, as shown clearly in the drawings, whereby the operator may hold the knives securely against the disks while the latter are operated. By the provision of the resilient rod J it will be understood that the operator may, by pressing upon said handles, cause the rod to yield to throwthe knives more forcibly against the disks to expedite the sharpening of the disks, the resilient rod J yielding under pressure to regulate the cutting of the disks.
From the foregoing it will be noted that by the provision of the apparatus described a simple and efficient mechanism is provided whereby either knife may be held against one or the other or the two adjacent disks, as may be desired, and by the adjusting mechanism carrying the knives the latter may be held at different angles to the surface of the disk as the latter is caused to rotate against the knives.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An apparatus for holding knives for sharpening disks consisting of a frame with standards rising therefrom, a bar connecting said standards, a disk-carrying shaft, and means for rotating the same, a resilient rod having one end bent to form a loop engaging said bar and movable thereon, a knife-holding yoke, a knife carried by said yoke, and a clamp fixed to said yoke and adjustably held upon said rod, as set forth.
2. An apparatus for holding knives for sharpening disks consisting of a frame with standards rising therefrom, a bar connecting said standards, a disk-carrying shaft, and means for rotating the same, a resilient rod having one end bent to form a loop engaging said bar, an adjustable winged collar on said rod, a clamping member adj ustably held upon said rod and provided with an integral ballsocket, a knife-carrying yoke, a shaft mounted thereon, a ball at one end of said shaft engaging said socket, and a handle fixed to said yoke, as set forth.
