Be it known that I, ALFRED BREDENBERG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Champlain, Clinton county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Book-Trimmers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to book or sheet trimming machines, and more particularly to that class of such machines in which a rotatable support for the pile or piles of books or sheets to be trimmed is moved into and out of cooperative relation with a single reciprocating trimming-knife.
My invention has for an object to provide in a machine of the character referred to mechanism whereby the pile-clamping devices may be operated in both directions 71. 6., to clamp and unclamp the pile or piles by power also to provide improved means for supporting and operating the pile-support. These and other objects of my invention will more fully appear from the following description.
My invention consists in the novel parts, improvements, and combinations herein shown and described.
The accompanying drawings, which are referred to herein and form a part hereof, illustrate one embodiment of my invention and serve, in connection with the description herein, to explain the principles thereof.
Of the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a book or sheet trimming machine constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section through the book-support and clamp-operating mechanism. Fig. 4 is a plan view, partly in horizontal section, of the parts appearing in Fig. 3. Figs. 5 and 6 are vertical sections taken at right angles to each other, illustrating a detail.
Like reference-numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views.
Referring now in detail to the embodiment of my invention illustrated in the drawings, the machine consists in general in a pair of side frames 1 and 2, suitably connected together by cross-girders 3, 4, and 5. The upper part of this frame is provided with a pair of vertical slots, in which a knife-bar 6 is mounted for vertical and longitudinal reciprocation in the ordinary manner, said knife being operated by a pair of links 7 and 8,0011- nected at their upper ends to the opposite ends of the'knife-bar and at their lower ends to a pair of cranks 9 and 10, fixed at the opposite ends of a transverse shaft journaled in the lower part of the frame. To this shaft is fixed a large gear 11,. which meshes with a driving-pinion 12, mounted on a main driving-shaft 13, journaled in the rear part of the frame and driven by any suitable means, as the tight and loose belt-pulleys 14, provision being made, as usual, to interrupt the driving connection between the shaft 13 and the pinion 12 by means of a suitable clutch, (indicated. at 15 and operatively connected to a foot-lever 16.)
As above pointed out, the table upon which the pile or piles of books or sheets to be trimmed are supported is arranged to be moved into and out of cooperative relation with the trimming-knife. As shown, this pile-support consists of a disk or plate 17, rotatably mounted on a carriage 18, arranged to slide or reciprocate to and from the plane in which the cutter-bar reciprocates on a suitable frame 19. In order that the level of the pile-support may be adjusted in relation to the plane in which the cutter-bar operates, the frame 19 is pivoted at its opposite ends to the side frames 1 and 2 of the machine at a point beneath the slots in which the cutterbar reciprocates, and the outer end of said frame is adjustably supported by a vertical bolt or stud 20, passing through a perforation in the outer end of an upwardly and outwardly extending bracket 21, carried by the transverse girder 3. The stud 20 is threaded where it passes through the bracket 21 and is provided on each side of said bracket with a nut, by the manipulation of which the frame 19 may be nicely adjusted.
The pile-support maybe provided with any suitable form of pile-clamping mechanism. As shown, a vertical guide or standard 22 is rigidly fixed on the pile-support and is provided with a vertically-movable clamp member 28, to the under surface of which is fixed a pair of clampblocks 24, preferably made of wood. In accordance with one feature of my invention power mechanism is provided for rotating the clamp-screw 25 in opposite directions at will as required to clamp an'dunclamp the pile or piles of material to be trimmed. This power mechanism may be variously constructed and arranged, and the details thereof may be varied between wide limitswithout departing from the spirit of my invention.
In accordance with the embodiment of my invention illustrated a power-shaft 28 is suitably journaled in a horizontal position beneath and in the plane of the clamp-screw 25 when the pile-support is in its outermost po sition or out of cooperative relation with the trimming mechanism, said shaft being continuously driven by any suitable means, as by a belt 29 receiving motion from the driving-shaft 13. Directly above the shaft 28 and in substantial alinement with the screw 25 when the latter is in its outermost position is mounted a vertical shaft 30, the same, as shown, being splined in the hub or sleeve of a beveled gear 31, suitably journaled to rotate with the shaft 30 as its axis, in a vertical bearing provided in the bracket 21. Any suitable connection may be provided between the shaft 30 and the screw 25. As shown, the shaft 30 is arranged to reciprocate vertically, and it is provided at its upper end with one member of a jaw-clutch 32, the other member of which is carried by the lower end of the screw-shaft 25. For the purpose of driving the gear 31, and with it the shaft 30, in opposite directions at will when desired a pair of oppositely-arranged beveled gears 33 and 34 are loosely journaled on the shaft 28 and arranged to mesh with the opposite sides of the beveled gear 31. Any suitable form of clutch mechanism may be provided between the beveled gears 33 and 34 and the shaft 28. Preferably, how ever, frictionclutches are employed for this purpose. As shown, each of the said beveled gears is provided with a disk forming one member of a friction-clutch, the disk connected with the clutch 34 being clearly shown n Fig. 1 and numbered 35, the cooperating member of the clutch being shown in section and being numbered 36. The outer member 37 of the friction-clutch for the beveled gear 33 is shown in side elevation. The members 36 and 37- are splined on the shaft 28, and

As shown, a pair of bell-crank levers 38 and 39 are fulcrumed on the cross-girder 3 beneath the shaft 28, said levers having upwardly-extending yoke-arms adapted to engage suitable grooves in the sliding clutch members 36 and 37, respectively. The other arms of said levers are respectively connected to foot-levers 40 and 41 by links 42 and 43.
Any suitable means may be provided for operating the clutch 32 to connect the screwshaft 25 with the power mechanism. Preferably, however, this clutch is operated by the foot-levers 40 and 41 and operated by them independently, so that whenever either foot-lever is depressed to bring one or the other of the friction-clutches into operation the clutch 32 will be simultaneously operated to connect the power mechanism with the clamp-screw 25. As shown, the upper end of the shaft 32 is grooved and connected by a pair of arms to a rock-shaft 44, from which extend a pair of arms 45 and 46, which are respectively connected, by means of suitable links 47 and 48, with the foot-levers 40 and 41, respectively. In order that the rock-shaft 44 may be operated by either foot-lever without interfering with its connection with the other foot-lever, the links 47 and 48 are preferably made in two parts, the lower parts 47 and 48 having a sliding connection with the upper part, and preferably also said links are made extensible and elastic, so that they may yield when the parts of the clutch 32 strike each other until the shaft 30 shall be turned so as to bring the spaces of one member of the clutch opposite the jaws of the other member. To this end coiled springs 49 and 50 are'arranged between the movable parts of the links, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. Any other suitable form of yielding link construction may be adopted without departing from my invention.
Another feature of my invention relates to the mechanism whereby the pile-support is mounted and controlled. To provide a frame-base for the pile-support 17 and at the same time provide for its easy rotation, the adjacent surfaces of said support and the carriage 18 are provided with annular grooves arranged near the circumference of the pilesupport 17 and adapted to receive a series of bearing-balls 51, the table being preferably accurately centered with relation to the carriage by a depending central boss fitted to an opening in the carriage 18.
For the purpose of locking the support 17 and holding it accurately in each of several different angular positions as required to trim the different sides of a pile of books or sheets to be trimmed said pile support is provided, preferably at a point in or near its peri'phery, with a series of equally-spaced recesses 52, adapted to receive simultaneously a pair of spring-pressed locking-bolts or latches 53, suitably mounted in guides provided on the outer part of the carriage 18, and pressed inwardly by springs 54. For the purpose of retracting said latches 53 to permit rotation of the pile-support between the cutting operations a pair of levers are fulcrumed to the forward part of the carriage 18, said levers having oppositely-extending latchvengaging arms 55 and operating-arms 56, terminating at points adjacent to each other near the center of the carriage. For the purpose of simultaneously operating these levers to retract the latches 53 a lever-operating member 57 is pivoted on the frame in such position as to extend into the path of the levers 56 when the carriage and pile-support are near their inner position. said lever-operating member having a handle 58, whereby it may be moved out of the path of the leverarms 56 when it is desired to draw the pilesupport outward to remove and replace the iles. p The operation of the particular machine illustrated is briefly as follows: The pile-support being in its outermost position, as illus .trated in the drawings, two piles of books or sheets of paper to be trimmed are placed on the cutting-beds 27 with their backs or one of their adjacent sides against the opposite sides .of the standard 22. One of the two foot-le .vers 40 and 41 is then operated to connect the screw 25 with the power mechanism and drive it in a direction to bring down the paper-clamp. When the paper is firmly clamped, the foot-lever is released and the pile-support moved forward until one side of the clamp-block 24 nearest the cutter strikes the cutting-knife. The clutch-operating lever 16 is then depressed and the trimmingknife thereby caused to trim one side of one of the piles of paper. The pile-support is then drawn away from the cutter until the arms 56 of the latch-operating levers strike the member 57 and are moved so as to release the pile-support. The pile-support is then turned through one-quarter of a revolution and at the same time moved forward, so as to release the latches 53, which thereupon enter the recesses under the influence of the springs 54 and lock the pile-support in its new position. The pile-support is then moved forward until the ends of the two clamp-blocks 24 rest against the knife, whereupon the trimming operation is repeated. The pilesupport is then withdrawn and turned through another angle of ninety degrees, and these operations are repeated until the four exposed sides of the two piles have all been trimmed. The pile-support is then drawn outwardly to the forward limit of its stroke, the lever-operating member 57 being manipulated to per mit this movement. The other one of the two levers 40 and 41 is then operated to connect the clamp-screw with the power mechanism and turn that screw in a direction to release thepiles and make room for the insertion of other piles. The operations previously described are then repeated.
My invention in its broader aspects is not limited to the precise construction herein shown and described nor to the precise construction by which it has been or may be carried into effect, asmany changes may be made in the details of the construction without departing from the main principles of the invention and without departing from itsv chief advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A'book or sheet trimmer including in combination, a trimming mechanism, a pilesupport movable into and out of cooperative relation with said trimming mechanism, a clamp mechanism movable with said sup port, power mechanism for operating said clamp mechanism, and means for connecting and disconnecting said power mechanism and said clamp mechanism when said pilesupport is out of cooperative relation with said trimming mechanism.
2. A book or sheet trimmer including in combination, a trimming mechanism, a rotatable pile-support movable into and out of cooperative relation with said trimming mechanism, a clamp mechanism rotatable and movable with said pilesupport, means for locking said pile-support and clamp mechanism against rotation, power mechanism for operating said clamp mechanism, and means for connecting and disconnecting said power mechanism and said clamp mechanism when said pile-support is out of cooperative relation with said trimming mechanism.
3. A book or sheet trimmer including in combination, a trimming mechanism, a pilesupport movable into and out of cooperative relation with said trimming mechanism, a
clamp mechanism movable with said support, power mechanism including two friction-clutches for operating said clamp mechanism in opposite directions, means for oper ating said clutches, and means for connecting and disconnecting said power mechanism and said clamp mechanism when said pilesupport is out of cooperative relation with said trimming mechanism.
4. A book or sheet trimmer including in combination, a trimming mechanism, a pilesupport movable into and out of cooperative relation with said trimming mechanism, a clamp mechanism movable with said support, power mechanism including two friction-clutches for operating said clamp mechanism in opposite directions, independent means for operating each clutch, and means for connecting and disconnecting said power screw, a power mechanism having a vertical shaft arranged to substantially aline with said clamp-operating screw when the pilesupport is out of cooperative relation with the trimming-knife, means for connecting and disconnecting said clamp-operating screw and said vertical shaft, and means for driving said vertical shaft in opposite directions.
6. A book or sheet trimmer including in combination, a trimming-knife reciprocating in a vertical plane, a pile-support reciprocating in a horizontal plane into and out of cooperative relation with said trimming-knife, a clamp mechanism mounted on said pile-support and having a vertical clamp-operating screw, a power mechanism having a vertical shaft arranged to substantially aline with said clamp-operating screw when the pile-support is out of cooperative relation with the trimming-knife, means for connecting and disconnecting said clampoperating screw and said vertical shaft, a clutch for connecting and disconnecting said clamp-operating screw and said vertical shaft, and means including a constantlyrunning shaft and two friction-clutches for driving said vertical shaft in opposite direc tions.
7. A book or sheet trimmer including in combination, a trimming-knife reciprocating in a vertical plane, a pile-support reciprocating in a horizontal plane into and out of cooperative relation with said trimmingknife, a clamp mechanism mounted on said pile-support and having a vertical clampoperating screw, a power mechanism having a vertical shaft arranged to substantially aline with said clamp-operating screw when the pile-support is out of cooperative relation with the trimming-knife, means for connecting and disconnecting said clamp-open ating screw and said vertical shaft, means for connecting and disconnecting said vertical shaft and screw, means including two oppositely-acting clutches for driving said vertical shaft in opposite directions, and independent means for operating said two clutches, each of said clutch-operating means being connected to operate said means for connecting and disconnecting the screw and vertical shaft.
8. A book or sheet trimmer including in combination, a trimming mechanism, a roriage on which said pile-support is rotatably mounted, a pair of spring-pressed latches mounted on said carriage and adapted to simultaneously engage suitably-spaced recesses in said pile-support, and means for simultaneously retracting said latches to permit rotation of said pile-support.
10. A book or sheet trimmer including in. combination, a trimming mechanism, a rotatable pilesupport, a reciprocating carriage on which said pile-support is mounted, a pair of reciprocating spring-pressed latches mounted on said carriage and adapted to engage suitably-spaced recesses in said pilesupport, a pair of levers fulcrumed on-said carriage and each having an armengaging one of said latches, the oppositely-extending arms of said levers terminating adjacent to each other, a latch-operating member mounted on a fixed part of the machine and adapted to be moved into and out of operative position with relation to said latch-operating levers when the said carriage is near one end of its stroke.
