Specification of Letters'Patent.
Patentes May-ee", rena.y
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that ll, Janne J. HAROLD, a eitizenpf the United States of nliirnerica, re siding at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Metal Filing, of' which the following is a specilication, reference being had therein to the acompanying drawings.
My' invention relatesl to improvements in metallic piling as used in subway, foundation, and irrigation work, dams', mine-shafts, caissons, sea-Walls, locks, coffer-dams, retaining-walls, and similar structures, `and comprises anged beams, preferably of the channel-beam or ll-beam type, provided with irlterlocking members. 4
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an end view of a run of showing the interlocking members back to back and locking the flanges of libeams, Fig. 2 is another end view showing the same interlocking members with U- shaped back fastened face to face and also locking the flanges of I-beams. Eig. 3 is an end viewv of a run of lmy piling, showing the use of channel-beams and the interlocking l1 members shown in Fig. 2 with one end cut o. Fig. L1 shows another method of fastening the interlocking members shown in Fig. 3, so that the fastening-bolts are at right angles to the channel-beams instead of parallel with the piling, as in Fig. 3. Eig. 5 shows a combination arran ement of Figs. 1 and 2, and Eig. 6 a comination arrangement of Figs. 3 and 4.
A represents the -beams. channel-beams, and B, B', and lookin members. l
ln *igl 1 the C represents the B2 the inter* interlocking members are piling fastened,
b'aek so that when formed with a straight bolt E or other suitfastened together by a ada ted to receive the flanges on one side of an l-beam. i y
In Fig. 2 the back of each interlocking member is FSJ-shaped, and the flat surfaces are fastened in Fig. 1, so that the flanges on one side of each li-beam may be engaged and retained by one ofthe jaws of each of the interlocking members.
One side of the interlocking members E ma' and the fiat surfaces may in the usual way, as shown in Eig. 4, or by bendin the flat surface around beneath the charme as shown in Fig. 3.. Where a com bination of the interlocking members is employed the back of the members B and B2 are preferabl longer, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, so as to a low encu h room for the other interlocking members E and l).
Modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having described my invention, what 1 claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
In metal piling, interlockin members and flanged beams, said interloc ing members provided with channels and flat surfaces said flat surfaces of said members fastene l. together and said channels ada ted to enl gage and retain the lian es of sai beams.
ln testimony Whereo l. afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES J. HAROLD.
