HOlSTING-ENGINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 15, 1906.
Application filed August 11, 1905. Serial No. 273,746-
To all 1071,0111, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES L. FILLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at De troit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in I-Ioisting-Engines; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification.
This invention relates to hoisting-engines. It has for its object an improved motor and hoisting-drum with couplings, whereby the drum can be clutched to or released from a shaft which is driven by the motor. In use the clutch device may be employed as a brake to retard the lowering of a load after the drum has been released from the driving mechanism to such an extent that it can revolve independently of the driving mechanism.
The drawing is an elevation of the motorcase and a longitudinal section through the drum and the shaft upon which the drum is mounted.
1 indicates a motor-case, which, as shown, is of the character known as an electric motor provided with a shaft 2, journaled in a frame 3, which unites the motor-case, and in which frame are bearings 4 for the shaft of a drum 5. From the frame 4 depend two hanging-brackets 6, to which are pivoted clutchcontrolling arms 7. The clutches are conical bodies 8, which slide on feathers 20, engage in conical cavities 9 in the ends of the drum 5 and are arranged to reciprocate longitudinally of the shaft 10 under the actuating influence of the lovers 7. The levers 7 are forked at the ends, which engage with the clutch-bodies, and the ends of the forks are provided with antifriction-roller terminals, that engage in neck-grooves 11 of the clutchbodies. The outer ends of the levers 7 are swiveled to running nuts 12, which run on threads cut on a shaft 13, on the end of which LS a sprocket-wheel 1 1, by which the screwshaft 13 is turned The wheel 14 is preferably provided with sprocket-teeth, by means of which it may be engaged by a sprocketchain and turned by a hanging sprocketchain. The drum is preferably provided with flanges 16 at its ends and with a central flange .18, which divides its surface into two parts, each of which is grooved with a spiral grooving to act as a guide for the lifting-cable.
The shaft 10 carries at each end a large gear 19, that engages small gears or pinions 20 on the end of shaft 2.
By turning the screw-stem 13 and operating the clutch-bodies 8 along the shaft 10 into clutching engagement with the drum the drum and the shaft are clutched to rotate together, and the motion of the motor serves to drive the drum.
When it is desired to lower the load, the shaft 13 is turned to loosen the clutchbodies and the load drops by gravity. During the lowering operation the clutches may be used as a brake by controlling the releasing action of the clutches from the drum. This obviates the necessity of reverse movement of the motor and avoids the use of current or other means to produce a movement of the motor during the time of lowering.
What I claim is- 1. In combination with a motor, a motorshaft, a drum-shaft, gearing on each end of the motor-shaft, and gearing on each end. of the drum-shaft, a frame connecting the said shafts, clutch-bodies on the drum-shaft adapted to slide longitudinally thereof, and engaging the drum at both ends, and clutchactuating means, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a motor, a drum shaft carried to turn therewith, a drum rotating freely on said drum-shaft and provided with terminal clutchsurfaces, clutch-bodies carried by said shaft adapted to slide longitudinally thereof and adapted to engage the drum, pivoted levers engaging said clutchbodies, and a screw-actuator engaging said pivoted levers to actuate them simultaneously, substantially asdescribed.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
' JAMES L. FILLING.
