To all whmn it ntay concern.-
Be it known that I, MAX A. SKALL, a citizen of the United States, residing 111 New York, in the borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented cer- 139lIl new and useful Improvements in Show- Oases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in show-cases, and more especially to show-cases of that class which. are known as frameless show-cases, in which the edges of the glass plates forming the top, front, and side walls of the show-case are held in direct abutment by suitable fastening means, so as to present a glass edge instead of a Wooden or metal edge.
In the frameless show-cases at present in use the glass plates forming the side and top walls of the show-case are usually connected by suitable fasteners attached to the plates by rivets passed through holes drilled in the plates. The boring of these holes has to be accomplished by means of diamond. drills, and hence it is slow and costs considerable.
The object of this invention is to avoid this drilling of the plates forming the walls of the case and to connect said plates in a reliable manner without any drilling of holes;
and for this purpose the invention consists in the novel features of construction, which.
will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved showcase. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top view of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on line 4 4, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a bottom view, drawn on a larger scale, of the top corner-pieces of the showcase and its connections. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the front corner-plates, showing the means for attaching the connecting-rods thereto. Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of one of the connecting parts shown in Fig. 6, and Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view of another such part.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, (1 represents the bottom of my improved show-case, which bottom is provided with soft-rubber studs 0. for resting on the floor at some distance from the same. In place of the rubber studs any other support for the bottom a may be used. The frame is provided with a front and side molding a and at the back with an upright frame I), which is closed by a hinged door I). The front and the side walls d d of the frame are formed of glass plates, the said glass plates abutting against the front glass plate, said plates being made of suitable thickness and the side plates abutting against the melding of the bottom a and against a raised ledgeof the rear frame 1). plate (I rests on the upper edge of the front and side plates d d and on the top of the rear frame I). The corners of the front, side, and top plates are connected by front and rear corner-pieces e e, of which the front cornerpieces 6 are connected with the base-frame by means of vertical screw-rods f, that pass through the bottom of the bottom frame a and are firmly held in position by screw-nuts f,that are screwed on the lower threaded ends of the connecting screw-rods. The front corner-pieces e are connected with each other by a horizontal front rod g.
Each end of the rod 9 is threaded into one end of a tubular angle-piece (2 (shown in Figs. 6 and 8,) and said angle-piece is soldered to the under portion of a triangular plate 0*, which is spaced. downwardly from the under surface of the corner-piece e by its upwardly-disposed side flanges e and which is in turn soldered to said corner-piece. For the purpose of increasing the strength of the solder-joint between the angle-piece and the plate a the latter is provided with openings 0, as shown in Fig. 7, in which the solder hardens, thereby firmly locking said anglepiece to said plate. In the rearwardly-extending leg of each angle-pieced is threaded a connecting-rod g, by means of which the corner-pieces e are connected with their corresponding rear corner-pieces 0, said rods being soldered to the under surface of said last-named pieces, as shown in Fig. 5. The intermediate or apex portions of the anglepieces a and triangular spacing-plates a are provided with cut-away portions a 6 respectively, through which the vertical rods f pass, as shown in Fig. 6, and in which they are soldered. By this arrangement the angle-pieces e" are spaced inwardly from the downward ly-extending flanges of the corner The top glass in order that the connecting-rods g 9 may support the top plate 01 which is disposed between said rods and said corner-pieces, be-
ing cut away at its corners, as shown in Fig. 5.-
In case horizontal glass shelves h are used they are supported on brackets f which are soldered to the vertical screw-rods f and to screw-eyesf or other supports applied to the rear frame I).
When the top corner-pieces are applied to the front, side, and top glass plates and to the rear frame I) and the screw-nuts f applied to the lower ends of the vertical screwrods f, the plates are tightly connected with the rear frame and a strong frameless showcase obtained, which can be shipped in detached state and readily assembled and put up for use. The hinged rear door is provided with suitable looks, so as to give access to the show-case to the parties whose goods are ex hibited in the same. In place of hinged doors sliding doors or any other arrangement of doors giving convenient access to the goods exhibited on the shelves may be arranged.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a showcase, the combination, with a base and back frame, of front, side, and top glass plates, rear corner-pieces appliedto the upper corners of said back frame, front corner-pieces resting on the upper surface of the top plate and having depending flanges abutting against the side plates and front plate, and connecting-rods spaced inwardly from the flanges of said corner-pieces and between which and said flanges the side plates and front plate are disposed, certain of said rods connecting the front corner-pieces with the rear corner-pieces, while another such rod I connects the front corner-pieces.
