GATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 15, 1906.
Application filed January 18,1906. Serial No. 296.643.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDGAR T. Monms, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elburn, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification.
The principal features of this invention are means for operating a latch or look for a gate in connection with a system of levers for opening the gate. When the gate is opened, the latch is released automatically and the gate then swings into its open position. Means are also provided for operating the connections to the latch directly by any one at the gate-entrance who desires to enter, whether on horseback or on foot.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation looking toward the ate in its open position. Fig. 2 is a top plan view, partly in section, of the same, showin the gate closed. Fig. 3 is a sectional detai of a bar having a cam which actuates the latch or bolt on the gate and also swings the gate open or closed. Fig. 4 is a similar view with the parts in different positionthat is, with the bolt withdrawn. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional detail of the parts shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
The gate-opening is between the gate- posts 11 and 12.
14 is a vertical pipe or rod connected by brackets 14 and bolts to the post 12. Upon the pipe the ate 15 is mounted to swing by means of col ars or clips 16, secured to the end of the gate. This gate may be of any well-known type, but preferably consists of a series of horizontal bars or board 15 bolted or nailed between vertical strips 15".
13 is a side or stop post having means for engaging the gate when it is in an open position and also for supporting levers for operating the gate-latch and swinging mechanism. The posts 11 and 13 are provided with boltslots 17, a beveled part 17 and stops 17 The gate-latch consists of a cylinder or barrel 18 set in the outer strip 15 and having lugs 18 for securing same thereto. Within the barrel 18 is a bolt 19, having a stem 19 and a rear extension 19*, provided with an eyelet 19.
19 is a finger for operating the latch by hand.
20 is a spring within the barrel 18, which engages the shoulder 19 on the bolt 19 and tends to keep the bolt in advanced position.
When the gate is in a closed position, this bolt enters the slot 17 in the gate-post 11.
21 is a lever extending above the gate and pivoted to the same. This lever has a pin 21 which engages the bolt extension 19 and its purpose is to enable any one on horseback to open the latch when the system of levers hereinafter mentioned is not employed or where the person should approach the gate without using said levers. The lever 21 may be used, but 1s not essential to the invention.
22 is a wire, cable, or cord attached to the rear of the bolt 19 and is intended to be op erated by the levers that operate or swing the gate, the bolt in all cases being first drawn by the wire before the gate swings. This is accomplished by the following means: At the hanging end of the gate and bolted to the same is a bracket 25, having an arm 25 projecting at an angle of about forty-five degrees from the cross vertical plane of the gate. The arm 25 has a vertical slot 25 in which is mounted a lever 26, pivoted at 26*. To the upper end of this lever is attached the wire or cable 22. The arm 25 also has a horizontal slot 25, which crosses the vertical slot, and at the outer end of the arm 25 is a fixed pin or bolt 27. 28 is a movable camplate having a connecting-rod 29 to the rocking lever 33, which is operated by bars 34 34", connected to the upper levers 35 36, which are fulcrumed on posts 12 and 13, respectively. The plate 28 has a slot 28, through which the bolt 27 extends. This plate is also provided with a cam or beveled edge 28 which bears against the lower end of the lever 26.
By sliding the plate 28 by means of bar 29 this cam first engages and moves the short lever 26, and thus draws the bolt 19 of the gate-latch. Continuing in its movement to the end of the slot 28*, the pin or bolt 27 is engaged by the same and the gate is swung open or closed in consequence of the pressure on the end of the bracket-arm.
I claim 1. The combination with a swinging gate having a projecting arm at the hinged end thereof extending lon itudinally to the opposite side of the hinge from the gate, and also havin a latch, of a gate-opening device connected to said arm, to operate the gate, an upright lever supported upon said arm and connected to the latch, and a cam operated by the gate-opening device and having a sliding bearing against the lever.
IIO
2. The combination with a swinging gate having at the hinged end thereof a projecting arm, and also having a latch, of a lever pivoted on the arm and connected to the latch, a rod having a slot-and-pin connection with the arm and having its end shaped at an angle to form a cam-surface having a sliding bearing against the lever to swing the same and draw the bolt, and gate-opening levers operatively connected to the rod.
3. The combination with a swinging gate having at the hinged end thereof a projecting arm with crossed horizontal and vertical slots, and also having a latch, of a lever pivoted in the vertical slot and connected at one 3-5 end to the latch, a sliding rod having a slotand-pin connection to the arm and having a cam slidable in the horizontal slot and bearing against the other end of the lever, and gate-opening devices connected to the rod, to 20 operate the same.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDGAR T. MORRIS.
