Be it known that I, WILLIAM I-I. BROWN, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Printing-Machine, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object the production of a printing-machine which is simple in construction, is highly durable and efficient, and is particularly suitable for use as a datingmachine g and to this end it consists in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.

The printing characters or numbers on the wheel V17 run from O to 9 inclusive, and those on the wheel 16 are preferably 1 1, 2 2, and 3 3, said characters or numbers on the wheel 16 being separated the same distance as those on the Wheel 17, with the exception of the first 1 and the last 3, between the centers of which, as here illustrated, is interposed a space five times greater than that between the centers of any two contiguous characters on the periphery of the wheel 17. Each of the type- wheels 15, 16, 17, and 18 is provided with external teeth 20- coacting with suitable means for retaining said wheels against undue rotation, and each of the typewheels 15, 16, and 17 is also provided with internal ratchet-teeth cooperating with means for feeding or adjusting said wheels.
In the particular eXemplification of my in-l vention disclosed in the accompanying drawings the internal teeth of the wheel 17 are ,equidistantly spaced from one another, correspond in number to the printing characters upon the periphery of said wheel, and comprise two groups or series of teeth 21 22, the members of the group or series 21 being two in number and formed of greater depth than the teeth 22vand arranged one directly behind the other, and the teeth of the group or series 22 being located in advance and at the rear of the group or series 21. The part or side of the wheel 16 abutting against the wheel 17 is provided with two series of internal teeth 23 24, having the same spacing between the members thereof as between the internal teeth of the wheel 17, with the eX- ception of the first and second teeth of the set 23, which are separated from each other IOO by a surface or cam 54 a distance equal to two ordinary spaces. As clearly shown in Figs. 7 to 11, inclusive, the teeth constituting the two series 23 24 are dissimilarly separated from the axis of the wheel 16, the members constituting the set 23 being arranged at a less radial distance from said axis than those constituting the set 24. In the illustrated embodiment of my invention the part or side of the wheel 16 opposite to that having the hereinbeforeedescrib'ed teeth is provided with a single additional tooth 25, as shown in Fig. 12, coacting with means which advances said wheel a single step at intervals and also rotates the months-wheel 15. The internal teeth 26 of the wheel 15, as illustrated in Fig. 13, are equidistantly spaced and correspond in number to the printing devices on the periphery of said wheel. l preferably provide the opposing side surfaces of the type-wheels 15 16 and the similar surfaces of the typewheels 17 18 with laterally-projecting annular shoulders, which engage each other, increase the bearing-surfaces of said typewheels and add to the efficiency and durability thereof. The type- wheels 15, 16, 17, and 18 are cast complete with smooth surfaces of the desired size and form, which do not require finishing, and consequently said type-wheels are economically manufactured and are particularly durable and eflicient in use.
The means for moving the type-wheels into and outof their operative or printing position is here illustrated as consisting of a head or wheel frame 27 for supporting the rocking part 19, a handpiece 28, and a spring 29. Said head 27 is generally formed with opposite portions 30 and with a top 31, provided with a rod or plunger 32, which is reciprocally guided through the tubular extension 14 and is provided with a notch 57, a peripheral enlargement 58 arranged above the notch 57 and closely fitting the interior of the extension 14, and an annular shoulder 59 for encountering the upper end of said extension and acting as a stop within the handpiece 28 to limit the downward movement of the head 27. rlhe handpiece 28 is provided with a socket 60, extending upwardly from its lower face for receiving the upper ends of the plunger 32 and theextension 14, and is suitably secured to the upper end of the rod or plunger 32, as by a screw 61, and the spring 29 encircles the rod or plunger 32 and is interposed between surfaces provided within the extension 14 and upon the rod or plunger 32. Thetype-wheels may be held in a depressed position by a laterally-movable locking member 33, having one end pivoted to the under side of the top of the frame 10, its other end provided with hand-engaging means 62 and its intermediate portion provided with an aperture 63, through which the rod or plunger 32 passes, and with means 64 for engaging a wall of the notch 57 in the rod or plunger' 32, Fig. 3. The described means for moving the type-wheels into and out of operative or printing position is particularly simple in construction and durable in use but I do not limit my invention thereto, as any suitable means may be used for this purpose.
In the preferable construction of my in vention the means for actuating the typewheels to arrange predetermined characters at the printing-surface consists of the rock ing part 19 and means movable thereby in reverse directions in a line substantially concentric with the type-wheels. Said rocking part when interposed between the opposite portions 30 of the head 27, as shown, is generally provided with pivot-sockets 34 in its ends, which receive the inner ends of connecting pieces or pivots 35, having their intermediate parts threaded and secured in openings in said portions 30 and their outer ends formed with pivotal parts 36 and with ad ditional portions 37, movable in guides 38 in the inner faces of the sides 12 of the frame 10. The pivotal parts 36 are passed through corresponding ends Vof links 39, having their other ends pivoted to arms 40, which are pivoted to the frame 10 and provided on an inker-support 41. As best seen in Fig. 4, the inner ends of the connecting-pieces 35 are passed, respectively, through a washer 42 and a handpiece 43, interposed between the ends of the rocking part 19 and the portions 30 of the head 27. The handpiece 43 is suitably iixed to the rocking part 19, is movable independently of. the handpiece- 28, and is normally engaged with a stop-face 44 on the head 27 As the head 27 is depressed the links 39 move on the pivotal parts 36 of the connecting-piecesy 35 relatively to the rocking part 19 and rock the arms 4() for forcing the inker and its support 41 out of the path of the type- wheels 15, 16, 17, and 18, and as said head is elevated the links 39 return the arms 40 and the inker-support to their normal position. The connecting-pieces 35 thus connectto the head 27 the rocking part 19 and the actuating means for the inker and its support and guide said head in its vertical movement. It will be understood, however, that I do not limit my invention to any particular construction of inker or to the means for supporting or actuating the same.
As best illustrated in Figs. 4 and 6, the means movable by the rocking part 19 consists of feeding members 45 46, which are usually composed of flat pieces longitudinally movable independently of each other in substantially radial guides 47 in the part 19 and Yare normally forced into operative position by springs 48 49. Said feeding members are obviously movable independentlyof the handpiece 28, and their engaging faces for actuating the type-wheels are separated from the ICO 'axis of the type-wheels a distance less than the radius of said type-wheels. The end faces of the feeding members 45 46 are preferably inclined inwardly, as shown, from the radial faces of said members engaging the internal teeth ofthe type- wheels 15, 16, and 17 and are forced inwardly by the inclined faces of the ratchet-teeth of the type-wheels as the rocking part is moved in one direction. One feeding member 45 cooperates with the teeth 25 26 of the type-wheels 16 15, and the other feeding member 46 is provided with a part 50, coperating with the teeth 23 24 of the typewheel 16, and an elongated part 51 coperating with the teeth 21 22 of the type-wheel 17. The springs 48 49 are arranged Within the guides 47 and project within openings 52, which extend from the inner ends of the feeding members 45 46 toward the other ends and through the opposite sides of said members. The outer end of the feeding member 45 engages an inner surface 53 of the type-wheel 16, extending in advance and at the rear of the tooth 25 and separated substantially the same radial distance from the axis of the wheel 16 as the apices of the teeth 26. Said surface 53 holds' the feeding member 45 retracted against the tension of its spring 48, and thus prevents the member 45 from assuming operative position in engagement with the teeth 26 until alined with the tooth 25 of the type-wheel 16. The type-wheels 15 16 17 are so arranged relatively to each other that when the member 45 is alined with the tooth 25 the member 46 will be in engagement with the cam or surface 54 and be held thereby in retracted position against the tension of its spring 49, so that in the advance movement of the rocking part 19 said feeding member 46 will impart no movement whatever to the wheels 16 17, While the feeding member 45 will advance the Wheels 15 and 16 one step.
The type-wheels are held in their'adjusted position by any desirable means, as opposite plates 55, secured to the front and rear sides of the head 27, and each formed with a plurality of spring-arms 56, engaging the external teeth 20 of thevtype-'wheeljs 15 16 17 18. The engaging ends of the spring-arms 56, provided' on one of the plates 55, are gen- .erally arranged directly opposite the corresponding ends of the spring-arms on the other plate 55 in order that said spring-arms may engage opposite sides of the type-wheels and operate with maximum efficiency to hold said type-wheels in their adjustedposition.
Assuming that the type-wheels of my machine are adjusted to print January 1, 1903,7 and that it is desired to print consecutively to January 1, 1904, the operation of the machine is as follows: The type-wheels 1 6 17 being in their initial position for printing 1, as shown in Fig. 7, are rotated step by step by the feeding member 46 through .the oscillatory movement imparted to said feeding member by the rocking part 19, which is in turn operated by the handpiece 43. As the free end of the handpiece 43 is loWered'the member 46 is moved from its position illustrated in full lines, Fig. 7, to that shown in dotted lines, and upon raising the free end of the handpiece the feeding member 46 is returned to its starting position, carrying with it both of the wheels 16 17 and thereby advancing each of said wheels one step. The continued manipulations of the handpiece as described feed both of the wheels 16 17 simultaneously step by step until the last tooth of the series 23 of the wheel 16 has been engaged by the member 46 and advanced to the starting position of said member 46, whereupon the wheel 16 has been advanced a partial revolution and is in the position illustrated in Fig. 8. Upon the next depression of the handpiece 43 the engaging member 46 will be alined with the first tooth of the series 24 of the wheel 16 but owing to the arrangement of the series 24 a greater radial distance from the axis of the wheel 16 than the series 23 the feeding member 46 will be prevented from moving into engagement with lsaid first tooth of the set 24 by the member of the series 22 of the wheel 17 occupying the same radial position as said tooth of the set 24. Consequently upon the handpiece 43 being raised onlythe wheel 17 will be advanced, and the succeeding manipulations of the handpiece 43 will continue to advance said wheel 17 alone until in the position shown in Fig. 8, whereupon the wheels 16 and 17 will be in position for printing 9. Upon the next depression of the handpiece the feeding member 46 engages the advance member of the group or series of teeth 21 of the wheel 17 said group or series comprising two teeth each of suflicient depth to permit the member 46 to be projected outwardly by its spring 49 into engagement with the teeth 24 of the wheel 16. It therefore follows that as the` member 46 moves the wheel 17 the rst two advance steps from the position occupied in Fig. 8 said member successively engages the deeper teeth 21 of the wheel 17 and the first two members 24 of the wheel 16 and also advances the wheel 16 two steps, the first advance of said wheels bringing the 0 on the wheel 17 and the first 1 on the wheel 16 into printing position, as seen in Fig. 9, for printing H10 and the second step advancing the 1 on the wheel 17 and the second 1 on the wheel 16into printing position, as shown in Fig. 10, for printing 11. Further manipulations of the handpiece 43 will thereafter feed the wheel 17 alone until said wheel again reaches the position illustrated in Fig. 8, with its 97 in printing position. After the wheel 17 has reached this position the next two advances of said wheel 17 will be effected by the engagement of the member IOO 46 with the two deeper teeth 21, and consequently when again engaging said series 21 the member 46 will be permitted to engage the third and fourth teeth of the set 24, and during these two advances of the wheel 17 the wheel 16 will be moved two steps, and the first and second 2 of the wheel 16 and the 0 and the l of the wheel 1'7 will be brought into printing position for successively printing 20 and 21. Additional movements of the handpiece 43 will again advance the wheel 17 alone until the 9 thereon is in printing position, whereupon during the next two advances of the wheel 17 the feeding member 46 will again engage the deeper teeth 21 and the last tooth 24 and the first tooth 23, and during these advances the first and second 3 on the Wheel 16 and the "0 andthe 1 upon the wheel 17 will be brought into printing position for successively printing 30 and 31., It will be particularly noted that when the wheels 16 and 17 are in the position assumed when printing 31, as seen in Fig. 11, the wheel 17 has made three complete revolutions from its position shown in Fig. 7, and the wheel 16 has made nine steps, or a complete revolution with the exception of the last step. Upon the first depression of the handpiece 43, after the wheels 16 and 17 are in the position illustrated in Fig. 11 for printing 31 the feeding member 46 is engaged by the surface 54 of the wheel 16 and is forced inwardly by said surface against the action of the spring 49 and held out of engagement with the teeth of the wheel 17. By the same manipulation of the handpiece the member 45, which has partaken of each oscillation of the member 46, but has been held retracted by the bearing-surface 53 of the wheel 16, is alined with the tooth 25 of the wheel 16 and is moved outwardly by the spring 48 into engagement with the tooth 25 and one of the teeth 26 of the wheel 15. Upon the return movement of the handpiece the feeding member 45 will advance the wheel 16 the final step needed to complete its first revolution, and thus move the second 3 out of printing position, and will simultaneously move the wheel 15 a single step to bring into printing position the characters on said wheel representing the next month. During this advance of the wheels 16 and 15 the feeding member 46 being held retracted out of operative position has no feeding action whatever, and consequently the wheel 17 remains stationary with its 1 in printingposition, ready for the next operation of the machine to print February 1, 1903. Continued movements of the handpiece 43 will again arrange the type-wheels in position to print January 1 whereupon the type-wheel 18 may be moved by hand a single tooth to print 1904, thus eecting the desired adjustment of the machine.
The construction and operation of my printing-machine will now be readily understood upon reference to the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings, and it will be apparent that more or less change may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a printing-machine, a plurality of type-wheels having their peripheries provided with printing characters for successively presenting the numbers 1 to 31 inclusive in the printing plane, teeth on the interior of the type-wheels, a part movable successively, and feeding members movable relatively to each other and movable by the successivelymovable part, said feeding members coperating with the internal teeth for advancing the type-wheels to successively present the numbers 1 to 31 in the printing plane, and to then present the number 1 in said plane and thereafter the numbers 2 to 31 inclusive, substantially as described.
2. In a printing-machine, a plurality of type-wheels, each having internal teeth, means for moving the type-wheels into and out of operative position, a plurality of feeding members movable independently of each other toward and from the axis of the typewheels, and movable in reverse directions in a line substantially concentric with the typewheels, said feeding members when movable in one of the reverse directions cooperating with the internal teeth for arranging the predetermined characters at the printing-surfaces ofthe type-wheels, and means provided on the type-wheels for forcin the feeding members toward the axis of sai wheels when the feeding members are moving in the other of said reverse directions, substantially as described.
3. In a printing-machine, a plurality of type-wheels, each having internal ratchetteeth, means for moving the type-wheels into and out of operative position, a plurality of feeding members movable independently of each other for forcing engaging faces thereof toward and from the axis of the type-wheels, and movable in reverse directions in a line substantially concentric with the type-wheels, said feeding members when movable in one of the reverse directions cooperating with the internal ratchet-teeth for arranging the predetermined characters at the printing-surfaces of the type-wheels, and when moving in the other of said directions coperating with the inclined surfaces of the ratchetteeth for forcing said engaging faces of the feeding members toward the axis of the typewheels, springs for engaging said faces of the feeding members with the ratchet-teeth, and means independent of the feeding members for holding the type-wheels in their adjusted position, substantially as described.

4. In a printing-machine, a rocking part, a type-Wheel arranged substantially concentric With the rocking part andturning on the periphery thereof, said type-Wheel having internal teeth, means for moving the type- Wheel into and out of operative position, and a feeding member coperating with the internal teeth of the type-Wheel and movable by the rocking part independently of said means for actuating the type-Wheel to arrange a predetermined character at the printing-surface of the typewvheel, substantially as and for the purpose specified. y
6. In a printing-machine, a rocking part, a type-Wheel arranged substantially concentric with the rocking part and turning on the periphery thereof, said type-Wheel having internal teeth, means for moving the type- Wheel into and out of operative position, a feeding member coperating with the internal teeth of the type-Wheel and movable by the rocking part independently of said means for actuating the type-Wheel to arrange a predetermined character at the printing-surface of the type-Wheel, and a spring for forcing the feeding member into operative position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
7. In a printing-machine, a rocking part having a guide, a type-Wheel arranged substantially concentric With the rocking part and turning on the periphery thereof, and a feeding member movable by the rocking part for actuating the type-Wheel to arrange a predetermined character at the printing-surface of the type-Wheel, said feeding member being movable lengthwise of the guide relatively to the rocking part, substantially as and for the purpose described.
8. In a printing-machine, a rocking part having a substantially radial guide, a type- Wheel arranged substantially concentric with the rocking part and having internal ratchet teeth, a feeding member movable longitudinally in the guide and movable by the rocking part for actuating the type-Wheel to arrange a predetermined character at the printing-surface of the type-Wheel, and a spring for moving the feeding member in the guide and yieldingly engaging the feeding member With said ratchet-teeth, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
9. In a printing-machine, a rocking part having a guide, a type-Wheel arranged substantially concentric With the rocking part, a feeding member movable by the rocking part for actuating the type-Wheel to arrange a predetermined character at the printing-sun face of the type-wheel,- said feeding member being formed with an opening extending inwardly from one end toward the other end and through its sides, and a spring arranged in said opening for moving the feeding member in the guide, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
10. In a printing-machine, a type-wheel having teeth, one group of said teeth being arranged one in advance of the other and formed of greater depth than the next adj acent teeth, a second type-Wheel having teeth, and feeding means coperating With the teeth of the first type-Wheel for moving said type- Wheel step by step for a predetermined distance, said feeding means coperating With teeth of the second type-Wheel When coperating with said group of deeper teeth of the first type-Wheel, and thereby moving the second type-Wheel a plurality of steps during the movement of the first type-Wheel, substantially as and for-the purpose described.

In a printing-machine, a type-Wheel having teeth, one group of said teeth being arranged one in advance of the other and formed of. greater depth than the next adjacent teeth in advance and at therear of said p group of teeth, a second type-Wheel having teeth, and feeding means coperating With the teeth of the first type-wheel for moving said type-Wheel step by step for a complete revolution, said feeding means coperating With teeth of the second type-Wheel When coperating With said group of deeper teeth of thefirst type-Wheel, and thereby moving the second type-Wheel a plurality of steps during the complete revolution of the first type-Wheel, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
12. In a printing-machine, a type-Wheel having teeth, one group of said teeth being arranged one in advance of theother and formed of greater depth than the next adj acent teeth, a second type-Wheel having two series of teeth, said series being separated dissimilar radial distances from the axis of the second type-Wheel, and feeding means coop-prating with the teeth of the first type- W eel for moving said type-'Wheel step by step for a predetermined distance, said feeding means coperating With members Vof the series of teeth of the second type -Wheel nearer its axis when coperating with the teeth of lesser depth of the first type-Wheel, and coperating with members of the series of teeth of the second type-Wheel farther from its axis When coperating with said group of deeper teeth of the first type-Wheel, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 18. In a printing-machine, a type-Wheel having internal teeth, some of said teeth being formed of greater depth than others, a second type-Wheel having internal teeth, some of said teeth being separated from the axis of the type-Wheels a greater radial distance than other teeth of the second type- Wheel, and feeding means cooperating with the internal teeth of the type-Wheels, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
15. In a printing-machine, a type-Wheel having internal teeth, a group of said teeth being arranged one in advance of the other and formed of greater depth than the next adjacent teeth in advance and at the rear of said group of teeth, a second type-Wheel having tWo series of internal.. teeth, said series being separated dissimilar radial distances from the axis of the second type-Wheel, and feeding means cooperating with the internal teeth of the first type-Wheel for moving said type-Wheel step by step for a plurality of revolutions, said feeding means cooperating With members of the series of internal teeth.

19. In a printing-machine, a plurality of type-Wheels having internal teeth, a plurality of feeding members cooperating With the internal teeth for advancing the type-Wheels, means for moving the feeding members relatively to each other into operative position, and means forforcing one of the feeding members from operative position, the movement of said latter means into operative position being controlled by the rotation of one of the type-Wheels, substantially as and for the purpose described.
20. In a printing-machine, a type-Wheel having teeth, one group of said teeth being arranged one in advance of the other and formed of greater depth than the next adjacent teeth in advance and at the rear of said group of teeth, a second type-Wheel having two series of teeth said series being separated dissimilar radial distances from the axis of the second type-Wheel, a feeding member cooperating With` the teeth of the first type- Wheel for moving said type-Wheel step by step for a plurality of revolutions, said feeding member'cooperating with members of the series of teeth of the second type-Wheel nearer its axis When cooperating during the first revolution of the first type-Wheel with the teeth of lesser depth of said first type-Wheel, and cooperating With members of the series of teeth of the second type-Wheel farther from its axis when cooperating With said group of deeper teeth of the first Wheel, means on the second type-Wheel for forcing said feeding member from operative position, and a second feeding member for operating the second type-Wheel, said second feeding member being movable relatively to the first feeding member, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
21. In a printing-machine, a plurality of type-Wheels, and feeding means for advancing one type-Wheel step by step independently of the remaining type-Wheels, for moving a second type-Wheel a plurality of steps during each revolution of the first type-Wheel, and

type-wheel and a second type-wheel together a plurality of immediately consecutive steps, and for advancing the second type-wheel and a third type-wheel relatively to the first typewheel, substantially as and for the` purpose described. p
23. In a printing-machine, a plurality of type-wheels, a feeding member for advancing two of the type-wheels, a second feeding member for advancing an additional typewheel and one of the type-wheels advanced by the first member, relatively to the other of said two type-Wheels advanced by the first member, said second feeding member being movable relatively to the first member, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
24. In a printing-machine, a type-wheel having internal teeth, a group of said teeth being arranged one in advance of the other and formed of greater depth than the next adjacent teeth in advance and at the rear of said group of teeth, a second type-Wheel having two series of internal teeth, said series being separated dissimilar radial distances from the axis of the second type-wheel, a third type-wheel having internal teeth, a
- feeding member coperating with the internal teeth of the first and second type-wheels to advance the -first type-wheel a plurality of rotations and the second type-wheel a partial revolution, means on the second typewheel for preventing said feeding member from operating the first type-wheel, and a second feedino member for advancing the second and third type-wheels, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
25. In a printing-inacliine arocking part, a plurality of type-wheels provided with peripheral printing-surfaces and vhaving their inner faces journaled on the rocking part and provided with teeth, and having opposing side surfaces provided with laterally-projecting annular shoulders engaging each other, and feeding means coperating with said teeth, substantially as and for the purpose described.
26. In a printiiig-machine, a plurality of type-wheels, each having external teeth and internal ratchet-teeth, means for moving the type-wheels into and out of operative position, feeding members coperating alternately with the internal ratchet-teeth of one of the type-wheels and movable independently into engagement with said internal teeth and movable by the inclined faces of said teeth from operative position, said feeding members being movable independently of said means for actuating the type-wheels to arrange predetermined characters at the printing-surfaces of the type-wheels, springs for yieldingly forcing the feeding members into engagement With the ratchet-teeth, means provided on said one of the typewlieels for holding either feeding member out of operative position when the other feeding member is in operative position and means for engaging the external teeth and holding the type-wheels in their adjusted position, substantially as described.
27. In a printing-machine, a plurality of type-wheels having internal and external teeth, a feeding member coperating with the internal teeth of two of the type-wheels for advancing said two type-wheels, a second feeding member coperating with the internal teeth of one of the type-wheels advanced by the first feeding member, and with the internal teeth of a third type-wheel for advancing said one of the rst type-'wheels and the third type-wheel relatively to the other of said two type-wheels advanced by the first member, and means for engaging the external teeth and holding the type-wheels in their adjusted position, substantially as described.
28. In a printing-machine, a frame having a guide, a type-wheel, means for reciprocating the type-wheel in a plane substantially parallel to the guide, a rocking part provided with means for advancing the type-wheel, and a pivot for the rocking part projecting into the guide, substantially as and for the purpose specified.7
29. In a printing-machine, a fi ame formed with guides, a movable head having opposite portions, a rocking part arranged between said opposite portions and formed with pivot-sockets in its ends, a type-wheel journaled on the rocking part, means for advancing the type-wheel, connecting-pieces having their intermediate parts secured to the opposite portions of the head, their outer ends movable in the guides of the frame, and their inner ends arranged in the pivot-sockets of the rocking art, substantially as and for the purpose set "01th.
30. In a printing-machine, a frame formed with a guide, a movable head, a rocking part formed with a socket, a type-wheel supported by the movable head means for advancing the type-wheel actuated by the rocking part, a connecting-piece secured to the movable head and having a part thereof movable in the guide and a second part arranged in the socket, a movable inker-support, and means between said connecting-piece and the inhersupp-ort for moving said inliei-sup ort, said last-mentioned means being movable on the connecting-piece relatively to the rocking part substantially as described.
31. In a printing-inachine, a type-wheel having its periphery provided with characters from 0 to 9 inclusive, a tens type-wheel having its periphery provided with characters 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, and a space between the centeis of the first 1 and the last 3, substantially five times as great as the space between the centers of any other two contiguous characters on said tens type-wheel, and feeding means for advancing the type-wheels to successively present the numbers 1 to 31 in the IOO printing plane, and to then present the number l in said plane and thereafter the nunibers 2 to 3l inclusive, substantially as described.
32. The combination of the main frame, the iixed vertical tubular extension 'from the top thereof, the vertically-recip:'ocable wheelfi arrre plovided with a plunger passing through such tubular extension, a handpiece attached to the plunger and provided with a socket inclosing the outer end of the tubular extension and a stop located in the socket and abutting against the tubular extension, and a spi ing for normally holding the wheelfranie in elevated position, substantially as described.
33. The combination of the main frane, the iiXed vertical and impeiforate tubular extension from the top theieof,the vel ticallyreciprocable wheel-'frame provided with a plunger passing through such tubular eXtension, and having a peripheral enlargement 'litting the interior` thereof, and a handpiece attached to the plunger and provided with a socket encircling the upper ends of the plunger and the tubular extension, substantially as described.
34. The combination of the main frame having a iiXed, imperforate tubular extension, the vertically-reciprocable Wheel-frame provided with a plunger movable in such tubular extension and having a head formed with a socket encircling the end of said eX- tension, and a locking merrber pivoted to the main frame, said member being movable laterally into and out of engagement with the plunger, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
35. The combination of the main frame having a tubular extension, the vertically-recipl oc'able wheel-f. ane provided with a plunger :movable in said tubular extension, and a laterally-movable locking men ber supported by the main frame and provided with an aperture through which the plunger passes, means for detachably engaging the plunger and with hand engaging means, substantially as described.
