Specification of Letters Patent,

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY A. MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented new and useful Im provements in Machines for Dampening Collars at the Lines of Their Folding, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines for dampening collars at the lines of the folding of the tops of the same from their neckbands; and it consists in the novel devices and parts and the novel combinations and arrangements of devices and parts hereinafter described, and set forth in the claims.
The purpose of this invention is to provide means whereby a collar may be dampened in a line parallel with the seam which unites the collar-top with the neckband, so that the collar-top may be readily turned at said line of dampening outward and over the neckband without cracking or breaking the fabric of the former, and also provide means by which the tabs of a collar having end tabs may be prevented from passing beneath the dampening devices and in contact with the same, and thereby prevented from being in any part thereof dampened by the dampening liquid used for dampening the body of the collar in line parallel to the seam which unites the collar-top to the neckband.
Other purposes and advantages attending the use of this invention will be understood by the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in two sheets, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the parts and devices embodied in this invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation. Fig. 4 is a plan, on a reduced scale, of the operating devices and parts in this invention and illustrating a modification of the same which may be employed in the machine. Fig. 5 is a plan illustrating the manner of operation of the parts of the machine with the collar when at the starting end, and Fig. 6 is a plan illustrating the manner of operation of devices and parts with parts of the collar at the finishing end.
Similar marks of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings, A is a work-supporting bed, which bed also supports the operating parts of the machine.
B is a revolving mechanism or device for moving the collar to be operated upon in di* rection of its length, which revolving device 'devices for transferring a suitable dampening liquid from a suitable source of supply, which is not shown in the drawings, to the collar operated upon.
C is a suitable collar-guide for operation with the longitudinal raised seam d of collar D and comprises the downwardly-projected side guide-lips c c, which are apart to a suflicient distance as to receive between them raised seam portion 01 of the collar, which unites the collar-top cl with the neckband d This collar-guide is suitably supported from the bed A by arm E, to one end of which said guide is secured by screw 6 or a rivet, while the opposite end is secured, preferably, in an adjustable manner to the bed A, as shown.
This arm E has preferably imposed on it a suitable pressure from a suitable supplemental spring-arm F. Arm E is adjustable longitudinally by means of a slot therein engaged by a thumb-screw passing through the slot into the bed of the machine.
In this invention I employ with the bed A, revolving device B, collar-guide C, straddling seam cl of the collar, and an elastic arm E for imposing pressure 011 said guide the tabedge-guiding device G. This tab-edge-guiding device G is shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 to be carried by arm E and provided with down projecting lip g and to be in situation forward of the revolving device B and between it and the collar-guide C, straddling the seam d of the collar. This tab-guiding device is shown to consist of a suitable piece, which is projected rearwardly from arm E toward a vertical line which may be drawn through the axes of the two dampeningcordcarrying wheels I) b, so as to be near to the point where the dam pening-cords carried by said wheels revolve in contact with the line of surface to be dampened at the folding-line of the collar-top, d, and is so situated in relation to collar-guide C that the lip g of the tab-edge guide G may be in alinement with the lip c of said collarguide when the collar is being moved forward.
In Fig. 4 is shown a modification of this invention in its novel part G and combinations and arrangements of other parts with the same. In this construction the collarguide 0 is shown to be secured to and carried by one arm E and the tab-edge guide G to be sesecured to bed A and each arm receiving pressure on it by a supplemental elastic arm F or F. In this construction the said tabedge guide G, carried by the second arm, is in alinement with the collar-guide C and between it and the collar-moving device 13, and the supplemental arms for imposing pressure on the respective arms E E for pressing down both the collar-guide C and tab-edge guide G for holding both said devices in contact with the collar operate substantially the same as when both said devices C and G are carried by a single arm, as shown in Fig. 1 and before described.
The manner in which the parts in this improvement operate may be readily understood by reference to Figs. 5 and 6. The collar to be operated upon is placed, finished side downward, on the bed A and moved forward under the guides C and G, as indicated in Fig. 5, with its seam d passed under the collar-guide C. The tab end moving forward meets the tab-guide g, which will deflect the tab end to the right and prevent it contacting with the moistening devices. The guide C riding over the seam d of the collar guides it correctly to the moistening devices, which apply moisture in a narrow line to the collar adjacent to the line d of the seam. The tabguide 9 rides upv on the surface of the collar and remains close to the seam d as the collar passes thereunder until the rear tab of the collar reaches the tab-guide, as indicated in Fig. 6, whereupon guide g drops down, so as to impinge'against the upper edge 01 of the tab, and conse uently will cause the collar to turn or will de ect the rear tab to one side, so that suchtab will not come in contact with the moistening devices.
The tab-guide rests on the table or edge of the hole in the table through which the lower dampening device operates, and it acts both to prevent the forward tab of an incoming collar striking the moistening devices, as 'well as to prevent the rearmost tab of a moistened collar striking such moistening devices. This tab-end guide I consider a most important feature ofthe present invention, and I do not restrict myself to the particular constructions thereof shown in the drawings. Neither do I restrict myself to the particular relative constructions and locations of the tab-guide and collar-guide shown in the drawings.
I do not herein claim broadly the tab-end guide, the generic claims therefor having been embodied in a divisional application filed by me March 31, 1905, Serial No. 253,165; neither do I claim herein the s ecific construction illustrated in Fig. 4, t at being specifically covered in said divisional application. I do not herein claim the collar-seam guide having a downwardly opening groove, the collar being passed seam side up under said guide to the wetting devices, apart from the tab end guide, claims for said collar-seam guide having been embodied in the divisional application Serial No. 253,165 above mentioned.

.1. In combination with mechanism for applying moisture to the foldingline of collars, and a collar-guide, means attached to the collar-guide adapted to deflect the tab ends of the collars away from said moistening de vices.
2. In combination with devices for applying moisture to the folding-lines of collars, a collar-guide in advance of such devices, and a tab end guide or deflector attached to the collar-guide and operating between the collar-guide and moistening devices, substantially as described.
3. In combination with rotary devices for applying moisture to the folding-lines of col lars, an adjustable collar-guide in advance of such devices, and a tab end guide or deflector attached to the collar-guide and located between the collar-guide and moistening devices, substantially as described.
4. In combination with mechanism for ap- 9 plying moisture to the folding-line of foldable or turn-down collars, and a collar-guide adapted to engage the seams of the collars and direct them to the moistening devices, of a tab-end guide attached to the collar-guide and adapted to deflect the tab ends of the collars away from said moistening devices.
5. In combination, means for applying moisture to the folding-line of collars, a spring-pressed collar-guide adapted to direct t em to the moistening devices, and a tab end. guide attached to the collar-guide and interposed between the collar-guide and the molstening devices, and adapted to deflect the tab ends out of the line of the moistening devices, substantially as described.
6. The combination of means for applying moisture to the folding-line of collars, and an adjustable spring-pressed collar-guide adapted to engage the seams thereof to direct them to the moistening devices; with a tab-end guide attached to the collar-guide and interposed between the collar-guide and the moistening devices, and adapted to deflect the tab ends out of the line of the moistening devices, substantially as described.
7. In a machine for dampening collars at their folding-line, the combination with a supporting-bed, a guide for guiding a collar in its lengthwise movement, andan arm connecting said guide with said bed, of a tabedge guide, attached tosaid arm and located relatively rearward of said collar-guide, substantially as and for the urpose set forth.
8. In a machine for ampening collars at their folding-lines, the combination of a Sllp.
porting-bed, means for dampening and moving a collar lengthwise over said bed, and a collar-guide operating with the seam which unites the collar top with the band; with an arm connecting said guide with said bed, and a tab-edge guide attached to said arm and by which the tabs of the collar are turned away from the dampening devices.
9. In a machine for dampening a collar at its folding-line, the combination of a collarsupporting bed, a revolving device for moving said collar lengthwise over said bed, and a collar-guide directing the lengthwise movement of the collar by contact with the collarseam; with an arm yieldingly holding said guide in contact with said collar, and a tabend guide attached to said arm and arranged between said collar-guide and said revolving device.
10. In a machine for dampening a collar at its folding-line, the combination of a collarsupporting bed, a revolving device for moving said collar lengthwise over said bed, a guide for directing the collar in its lengthwise movement by engaging the collar-seam, and means exerting a downward pressure on said guide; with a tab-end guide connected to said guide and operating with the end tabs of a collar to turn the collar to an angle in relation to the line of its lengthwise movement.
11. In a machine for dampening collars at their folding-line, the combination of a collarsupporting bed, means for moving the collars lengthwise on said bed, a collar-guide engaging the seam which unites the collar-top with the neckb'and, an arm connecting said guide with the said bed, and a spring imposing pressure on said arm; with a tab-guide attached to said arm and adapted to engage the edge of the end tab of a collar.
12. In a seam-dampener of the character described, the combination with the wetting device, of a collar-guide mounted on a movable member, a tab-end guide attached to said member and means for adjusting said member, substantially as specified.
13. In a seam-dampener of the character described, the combination with the wetting devices, of a collar-guide mounted on a movable member, a tab-end guide attached thereto and means connected with said member for adjusting it laterally with reference to the wetting devices at the dampening-point, substantially as specified.
14. In a collar-dampening machine, the combination with two dampening-wheels be tween which collars are to be passed, of a collar-guiding device provided with a sea1n-receiving groove located in front of said dampening-wheels and adapted to guide the collar in its passage to and between said wheels, and a tab-end guide attached to said collar-guide.
