Description

No. 820,304. PATENTED MAY 8, 1906.
J. J. HAROLD. METAL PILING.
APPLICATION FILED DEG.22,1904.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES J. HAROLD, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO EMMA HAROLD, OF JERSEY ITY, NEIV JERSEY.
METAL FILING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 8, 1906.
1'0 1.1M whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES J. HAROLD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Piling, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to im rovements in metallic piling as used 'in su way, foundation, and irrigation work, clams, mine-shafts, caissons, sea walls, locks, coffer dams, retaining-walls, and similar structures, and comprises flanged beams, preferably of the channel-beam type, provided with interlocking members.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an end view of a run of my piling, showing the members interlocking on both sides; and Fig. 2 is an end view of a run of my piling, showing the members interlocking on one side. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a side view of Fig. 3, and Fig. 6. is a vertical sectional view of a single beam and two interlocking members. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one of the plates which may be attached to the reinforcing-block of the interlocking member, and Fig. 8 is a vertical sectionaiyiew showing a plate inclined at both ends. I
A and B are the beam members, arranged so that the flanges of each member engage the flanges of interlocking members and are retained in place by the plates attached to the blocks of wood. or other suitable material attached to channel-beams and comprising the interlocking members. .In Figs. 1, 3, and 5 these plates are indicated as O and D on the front and back of the piling, respectively.- Each plate may be fastened by bolts which pass through the plate, the block or beam, and the channel-beam. One side of the plate is projected to engage the back of the adjoining beam and retain same in position. In Figs. '2 and 4 these plates are indicated as D, and both sides of the plate are. projected for engaging the backs of the adjoining beams. The lower plate (shown in Fig. 6) also shows the lower end turned up, thereby preventing the separation of the plate from the beam by sharp stones or other obstructions encountered in driving.
Where a plate tapered at both ends is employed such as is indicated at E, Fig. 8thc piles may be withdrawn more easily, as the top of the interlocking member will not present the same resistance in the withdrawal of the pile.
Modifications may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In piling, flanged beam members and interlocking members, said interlocking members tapered toward the bottom of the piling and provided with projecting flanges ada ted to retain saidflanged beam members in p ace.
2. In piling, flanged beam members and interlocking members, said interlocking members tapered from the center toward the top and bottom of the piling and provided with flanges adapted to retain said flanged beam members in place.
3. In piling, flanged beam members and reinforced tapered interlocking members,
said interlocking members provided with pro-- j ecting flanges adapted to retain said flanged beam members in place.
In testimony whereof I alliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES J. HAROLD. Witnesses:
