UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. MERRYWEATHER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
HANDLE ATTACHMENT FOR WINDOW-SASHES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedMay s, 1906.
Application filed February 5,1906. Serial No. 299,389.
1'0 al whom it may concern.-
. Be it known that I, CHARLES A. MERRY- WEATHER, a citizen of the United States, residin at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and tate of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handle Attachments for Window Sashes, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to the sashes of windows; and the object thereof is to provide improved means for lowering the upper sash, a further object being to provide a device of the class specified which will strengthen the upper sash and revent injury thereto in the operation of pu ling it down; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a handle attachment which is designed to be secured to the bottom portion of the upper sash and by means of which the said sash may be conveniently lowered when the lower'sash is raised.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is an outside view of a part of a window-frame, showing the sashes mounted therein and showing my improvement applied to the upper sash; Fig. 2, a side view of a modified form of my improvement, and Fig. 3 a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, reference being made to Fig. 1, I have shown a part of a window-frame comprising opposite side portions a and a bottom frame member a and mounted in said frame are the usual bottom and top sashes b and c, the top 7 ortion of the frame and the top portion of t e upper sash being broken away.
In the practice of my invention, as shown in Fig. 1, I provide an L-shaped plate (1, two of which are employ secured to the bottom of the side rails c of the top sash and to the bottom rail 0 of said sash and on the outer side of said sash and in such manner as to cover the joint between said rails. The longer arm of the L-shaped plates (1 is secured to the side rails c of the top sash, and the bottom or shorter arm of said plates is provided with a depending handle member (1 and whenever it is desired to lower the top sash all that is necessary is to ed, and said plates are I raise the bottom sash in the usual manner and catch hold of the handle member d of the plates 01 and pull the to sash down.
It is a well-known fact t at it is frequently very difiicult to lower the top sash by reason of the fact that no means is provided for catching hold of it, and under ordinary circumstances it is customary to take hold of i the bottom rail of said sash and pull downwardly thereon, and this operation frequently strains and injures said sash, especially if .the sash is a large one; but with my improvement the upper sash may be easily pulled down, and the plates d being secured to the outer side of the said sash the handle members d thereof may be conveniently grasped as soon as the bottom sash is raised far enough to permit the said handle members to be reached by passing the hands out under the bottom sash.
In Fig. 2 I have shown a modification of the handle-plates d, which comprise a single oblong plate (i with which the handle member d is connected, and in practice when this form of handle-plate is used the said plate is secured to the bottom rail 0 of the sash transversely of the joint between said bottom rail and the side rails c in the same position as the bottom members of the L-shaped plates (1 shown in Fig. 1. It will also be noted that the longer arms of the L-shaped plates d, which are secured to the side rails of the top sash, are narrower than said side rails, the object of this being to enable said plates to be secured to the side rails 0 so that they will not interfere with the outer beads or strips (1 which are secured to the frame of the window and hold the top sash in position, and if the handle-plate d (shown in Fig. 2) is employed care must be taken in securing said plates to the bottom rail so that the outer ends thereof will not interfere with the beads or strips a Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with the top sash of a window, of handle-plates which are secured to the side and bottom rails of said sash and to the outer side thereof and which overlap the joint between said rails, said handleplates being provided at their bottom edges with downwardly-directed handles in the same. plane as said plates, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination with the top sash of a window, of handle-plates secured to the side rails and bottom rail thereof, said handleplates being L-shapecl in form and the longer arms thereof being secured to the side rails,
and the shorter arms of said plates being pro- 5 vided at their bottom edges With down- Wardly-directedhandles in the same plane as said plates, substantially as shown and described.
3. A handle-plate for window-sashes, said IO plate being L-shaped in form and the bottom portion thereof being providedwith a handle, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 8d 1 5 day of February, 1906.
CHARLES A. MERRYWEATHER.
