Witnesses I Attorneys UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM J. PENNINGTON, OF BROQKLYN, NEW YORK.
' STAlR-CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 8, 1906.
To all whom, it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. PENNING- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Stair-Chair, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stair-chairs, and has for an object to provide a device of the class embodying new and improved features of convenience, durability, simplicity, and utility.
A further object of the invention is to provide a chair having a seat arranged to rest upon the tread of a stair and legs proportioned to bear upon the tread of a second stair below.
A further object of the invention is to provide a chair of the class described having a seat to rest upon a stair and a hinged back carrying an adjustable cleat positioned to bear upon the edge of the stair above the seat.
A further object of the invention is to provide a chair for use on stairs and arranged to fold up into small compass for storage and having improved means to hold the hinged part in operative position and to prevent the accidental folding and slipping.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved chair applied to a stair. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the improved chair seen from the rear. Fig. 3 is a View in elevation of the chair folded.
Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
In its referred embodiment the improved stair-chalr forming the subject-matter of this application comprises a seat 10, which may be solid, caned, or of any usual construction. To the bottom of the seat and adjacent the front edge are hinged the legs 11, as by the.
hindges 12, and connected by the cross-bar 13 an the round 14 or in any approved manner. With the seat 10 resting upon the tread of the stair, as 15, the legs are proportioned to bear upon the tread of a stair below, as 16. Adj acent the back edge the seat will be provided with elastic pads 17, and the ends of the legs will be rovided with similar pads 18, and the back e ge of the seat will be extended, as at 19, to allow for an overhanging stair edge, as 20.
Upon the u per side of the seat will be hinged the bac 21, as by the hinges 22, and
may be of solid material or of any usual conthe back and by means of the slot and screw may be positioned to bear upon the edge, as 20, of the stair next above the seat.
To hold the legs in operative position, a button 27 is pivoted to the under side of the seat, as at 28, and proportioned and arranged to bear against the cross-bar 13 and to hold the legs unfolded and prevent the sliding of the seat.
From the foregoing description it is believed the operation, use, and advantages of the improved chair will be fully and clearly understood.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A folding 'chair comprising a seat, a back hinged to the seat, a cleat disposed transversely across the back and having a straight edge adapted to contact throughout its length with the tread of a stair, means for adjustably securing said cleat to the back, and means to support the front of the chair.
2. A stair-chair comprising a seat proportioned to bear upon a stair-tread, legs hinged to the seat and arranged to bear upon a lower stair, a back carried by the seat, a cleat extending transversely across the back and p0- sitioned to engage the edge of a stair above the seat.
3. A stair-chair comprising a seat proportioned to bear upon a stair-tread, legs hinged to the under side of the seat adjacent the front edge and proportioned to bear upon a lower stair, a button pivoted to the under side of the seat and arranged to bear against and hold the leg members in operative position, a back hinged to the seat, a cleat extending transversely across the back, and vertically movable and means to hold the cleat at the proper position to bear upon the edge of a stair above the seat.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM J. PENNINGTON.
