Description

@uiten tatrs @anni @Hire JONATHAN M. CLARK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 81,983,dated September 8, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-GENERATORS.
1ro'ALL WHOM 1T MAY ooNoEnN:
Be it known that I, JONATHAN M. CLARK, of the city, county, andState of NewYork, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tubular Boilers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanyingv drawing, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of a boiler, or boilerin part, constructed in accordance with my improvement.
Figure 2, a longitudinal section, on an enlarged scale, of two of the tubes, with their hollow heads, and
Figure 3 a sectional end view of the same. i l
'Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This, my improvement, relates to that description of boilers-which. are made up of a tier or tiers of tubes, arranged one above the' other, at, say, a slight angle from the horizon, andcommunicati'ng withA each other, that is, the tubes that lie one abovey the other, by or through passages at their ends, and combining with such construction separate heads to the tubes, of a square or block-like character, and that butt the one up against the other, to form general close heads tothe ends of the boiler made up of tubes, as described.
n My improvement on such descriptionof boiler consists in a combination, with the tubes, of enlarged hollow heads, covered externally by cap-plates, and communicating, by orifices made in their side or-edge's, in a direct manner, the one with the other, and whereby not only are return-pipes or Vbends dispensed with, to establish a free circulation throughout the tubes, and said heads, which are of a square or block-like character, made to form general close heads to the ends of the boiler, but whereby the circulation is kept up, without exposure beyond the ends of the boiler, the tendency-to fouling is reduced, and, by the enlarged opening `presented on removal of any one or more of the cap-plates, the greatest facility alforded for clearing. out the tubes.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A A represent the tubes, ofwhich there may be any numbe in a tier, arranged oneabove the other, and any number of tiers, side by side in alrow. -These tubes, that may be of any desired diameter' and-length, are set inclining upwards from the back to and over the fireplace, andare open at their ends, where they are fitted or provided'with enlarged hollow heads B B, having caps or cap-plates a a, of square or parallelogramic form, said caps being secured to the heads by-bolts b, and the .heads being of such a'lsize or area as that sediment or 'matter may settle in them, without interrupting free passage through the tubes'or the orifices c c, that establish-a direct connection between the heads, at leither end, in a'tier, andi by which enlarged capacity of the beads, relatively to the tubes, a large and full exposure of the tubes at their' ends is established, for cleaning-out purposes, or simply removing the caps that cover the heads. The enlarged hollow heads B B, with their cap-plates, rest, one upon and against the other, and t, by annularV projections and recesses d d, through intermediate rubber packing ein steam-tight connection at pr around the orifices c c, .and may be drawn up tight by nuts f, screwing on to pin-projections g, fast to the one of two adjacent heads, and passing through openings on tbe other'of s aid heads. YThe parallelogramic shape of the enlarged hollow heads fand theircaps serves to give a steady 'rst of the tubes, the one upon oragainst the other, and to formclose general heads or ends to the boiler. Y i
Where two or more tiers of tubes, arranged side by side, are used, any suitablewater-feed connection may be established between them at their base, and steam communication between them Yat their tops.
l What is here claimed, vand desired to besecured by Lettersy Patent, is-
The angular hollow head B, constructed with passages c, for the circulation of water or steam, secured together by pin-projections g and nutsf, and with removable covers a, combined with the tubes A, substantially as shown and described for the purpose set forth.
