Description

@uitrit tstrs @anni @frn Letters Patent No. 81,972, Vclotteol Septen-zier 8, 1.868.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-GENERATDRS.
fitte tlnmlereferrer tu in time sttets @mit mit making putt ai the same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JAMES ARMSTRONG, of Bucyrus, in the county of Crawford, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement inVSteam-Boilersj and I do hereby declare that the following is u full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in whieh- Figure 1 is a front view.
Figure 2 is a side elevation.
Figure 3 is a. rear elevation.
Figure 4 is a transverse section, taken in the line a: :u of fig. 2, and
Figure 5 is a vertical section, taken in the line y y of tig. 1, showing the manner of connecting the tubes.
In all the figures the outer casing of the boiler, which ts over the outer tubes, is not represented.
, The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement of the tubes which contain the water, by which a. large surface is presented to theactiou-ot` thc heat from the tire, thereby causing a more rapid and economical generation of steam, and not so liable to explode as the ordinary {lue or tube-boilers; also, in the manner of i connectingv the said tubes.
To enable others skilledV in theart to make-and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction andvoperation.
The front of the boiler is made of tubes or pipes, A, which are arranged vertically side by side, and at the lower and upper ends ot' the said tubes or pipes. are horizontal tubes or pipes, B B', and are secured together by hollow screws, a, as seen in fig. 5.
The rear end of the boiler is of the same construction, with theexception that there is no horizontall tube or pipe at the bottom of the vertical tubes or pipes, but the sections of tubes are held together by a clasp, seen in iigs. 2 and 3, and that the lower end of each verticaltube or pipe is closed by a screw-cap or plug, b.
The ends ofithe boiler areconnected together by horizontal tubes or pipes, D D. The outer ones, D,
. that form the shell, are placed closely together, but the inner ones, D', aremade smaller, thus leaving a space Varound allthe interior tubes or pipes for the lire and heat to circulate freely. m
These horizontal tubes are secured to the vertical ones in the same manner as the latter are secured to the p horizontal ones B B' on the ends of' the boiler.
The fire-box is also formed of the tubes, which are connected together in the same manner as the others, as seen in the drawings. v
By constructing a boiler in the above-described manner, any ofthe tubes can be cleaned, by removing one of the hollow screws or screw-caps. It will be seen that each tier of horizontal tubes connected by the-vertical ones forms a section, and by removing the screws a in the horizontal cross-tubes B B', a section of the boiler vcan be removed, and by inserting screw-plugs into the openings left in the horizontal cross-tubes, the removal of a section does not interfere with the workingof the boiler'.
` If desirethglass can beinserted in the screw-plugs, by which means the height of water can be ascertained, as seen in Eig. 1 at c. a Y K Openings are left at proper places, for the introduction of water and escape of steam.,
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The arrangement of the vouter and inner tubes of the boiler, whereby the heat is caused to circulate around the inner ones, substantially as shown and described.
' 2. The construction of the fire-box with the surrounding tubes, as herein shown and described.
3. The construction of' the hollow screws a, arid thearraugement of them with the tubes B, as herein shown and described. v
