Be it known that I, LEON P. LOWE, a citi zen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in gas-holders, the object of my invention being to provide a gas-holder equipped with means for increasing the weight of the holder, so as to correspondingly increase the pressure of the gas, which means shall be more convenient in use than those heretofore employed and by means of which the pressure of the gas can be increased without materially increasing the strain upon the holder.
My invention also resides in certain novel details of construction hereinafter fully speci fied, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the holder broken away at one side to show the interior. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of the top of the holder. Fig. 3 is a broken plan view of the same.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the tank of the gas-holder, which is preferably made of metal.
4 represents the I-beams, against which run the rollers 5, mounted upon the periphery of the gas-holder 6. 7 represents the gassupply pipe for supplying the gas to said holder. The top of said holder is shown at 8, and the cylindrical wall 9 thereof is continued above said top. The object of such extension is to form a receptacle for a weighting medium for adding weight to the tank. I have in the present instance shown said me dium as water, as at 10 in Fig. 1. In using water for this purpose it is found desirable to divide the receptacle into compartments by means of walls 11, which cross each other at right angles, as shown. The utilityof the latter construction is that the water is thus prevented from being driven by a high wind to one side of the tank, which would cause an undue pressure upon the tank at that side. Small a ertures 12 may, however, be provided, w ch will cause the water to assume a uniform level over the top without allowing any sudden rush of water to one side.
I am aware that it has been proposed to form the top of a gas-holder by means of grooved ointing pieces and sheet-iron or other material secured in said pieces and that said pieces have extended slightly above the level of the sheet material. My invention differs from the above in that the walls are intended to retain a liquid weighting medium and rest upon and are independent of the structure of the casing proper of the gasholder. An important advantage resulting from this method of weighting the holder is that on account of the weight being evenly distributed while the pressure of the gas in the holder is correspondingly increased due to the increased weight on the holder, yet the strain upon the top of the holder is not changed, for any increase of weight upon the upper side of the top of the holder will be met by a corresponding increase of pressure by the gas upon the under side of said top and will not have to be borne by the metal of the top itself.
The polygonal brace 18 of said tank is connected to a central ring 21 by means of tiebars 22.

I claim 1. A gas-holder having its side extended above the top of the tank to form a receptacle for a weighting medium, and walls on said top, independent of the structure of the casing proper of the holder, and crossing each other to form compartments for said medium, substantially as described.
2. A gas-holder having its side extended above the top of the tank to form a receptacle for a weighting medium, and walls on said top, crossing each other to form compartments for said medium, and provided with apertures at the lower portion thereof, substantially as described.
