HENRY FVSHAW, OF WEST ROXBUBY, sssreNon T0 JAMESA. WOODBLURY AND SOLO-MON s. GRAY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.-
Lettera IatentNa, 81,953; dated September 8, 1868.
flit: some refzmt in it time Enlist Batmt amt muting part of its. sum.
Be it knownthat I, HENRY F. SHAW, of West Roxhury, in the county of Norfolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Plapingi'Metals, of which-the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad tothe accompanying drawings, making a part' of this specification, in which I l Fignre'l represents a side elevation'of-a machine embodying my invention. Figure 2 is a transverse verticalsecti'on of the same.
My invention relates to the application, in such'macmnes, u a differential gear, in connection with an eccentric-shaft or'sleeve, operating together upon the principledescribed in the patent, No-. 64,915, granted to me on the 21st May, 1867. v
In my present improvement, at cylinde r,'having a spur-gear upon its internal surface, is fixedto'tne shaft which moves the bedof the planing-machine,=npon which spur-gear rolls 1!. second cylinder, with a spur-gear .upon its externalsurface, and hung upon a sleeve arranged eccentrically on theshaft which carries the'firstnamed cylinder. The cylinder with the'cxternal gear is prevented from rotating, but is allowed an oscillating movement by means of'an arm attached to it, and, extending a short distance, jis provided with a slot, at its end, which plays upon a pin attached to the side of the frame of the machine. The rotationof the eccentric-sleeve. imparts a motion to the cylinder h'avingthe external gear, and the teeth of the latter, engaging with the internal gear, imparts motion to'the latter, the amount of motion depending upon the difi'erence of the relative diameters of the twopitch-lines of-the spuvgears.
Referring to the drawings, a (1 represent the frame of a plsning-maehine,-pf any suitable construction b represents the travelling platforrh,:supported upon any suitable ways 6 b; d is a gear-wheel, secured to the shaft 9, and engaging with the toothed rack c,on the. under side of the platform 6, all constructed'and operating in the usual manner. I I I I Firmly secured to the shaft g, and'rota'ting with it, outsideo'f the ,frame, is a cylinder, provided with an internal spur-gear. I i I I v I I Upon the shaft g is placed a loose sleeve, i i,'the portions" forming an eccentric, npoii which is hung loosely the external gear-cylinder es i Y Z and k are loose pulleys on the sleeve 2', and kjare the orivingpulleys, secured, respectively, to the sleeve, z, and to each other, by the screws at. w I
Motion being imparted to the driving-pulleys kj, by means of a belt, from any suitable power, the sleeve 2' s" will be correspondingly rotated. I The eccentricity of the portion i'of the sleeve imparts/sluoscillatory motion. to the external gear-cylinder e, causing a portion of the teeth of the same to engage successively and constantly: with the corresponding teeth of the internal gear-cylinder f, as indicated bythe dotted lines in fig. 1,'thus imparting to the latter a slow, steady, and powerful movement, and, being firmly fiicd outhe shaftg,- comma; nicates a corresponding motion to the travellingplotform 5, uponwhich the article to Ibe .planed is-p lao'ed. I
"The pulleys are operated 'by means of two belts, one-for efi'ecting the forward motion of the bed, ondthe other, the backward movement; in the latter case the belts being crossed.
What I claim as myinven'tion, and desire to secure-by Letters Patent,-is-
1. In combination with the bed of a planing-machine, the rack. c, pinion d, and shaft g, or their equivalents, and the internal and external gears f e, eccentric-sleeve 2' i, and the fast andloose pulleys, when arranged and "operating substantially as specified, and for the purposesetforth. I I
- 2. The arrangement, onthe shaft g, of the fast and loose pulleys, the eccentric-sleeve '2' i, and the internal and external gears e e, substantially in the manner shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my nameto thisspecification'in the presence of two snbscribingwitnesses.
' HENRY JF. SHAW.
