Application filed February l, 1905. Serial No 243.604.
T0 all IIJ/1.07m it 71mg/ con/ecrit:
Be it known that l, Hanni' O. SEcnEs'r,'a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful lmprovement in Lawn-Triinming Devices, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which l have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
My invention relates to devices for trimming lawns, and particularly to devices for cutting and trimming the edges thereof.
The object of said inveiit-ioii is to effect such edging operation in a ready and economical manner.
Said invention consists of means hereinafter fully described., and particularly set forth in the claims.
The annexed drawings and the following description set forth in detail certain means embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting but one of various forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
ln said annexed drawings, Figure l represents a lawn-mower in plan, to which a device embodying my invention is applied as an attachment. tion of same. Figs. 2S and 4 represent plan and side elevational views of a deviceA embodying said invention solely.
Like letters indicate like parts in the two machines illustrated.
Referring iirst to the mechanism illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the axle d of the ground or driving wheel A projects from the latter sufliciently to form a pivotal bearing for an arm B, to whose lower or free end is fixed a small plow B, which is adapted to throw earth laterally away from the machine. lntermediately of the extremities and upon the inner side of said arm is rotatably mounted a cutter-disk C of a diameter such as to bring its cutting edge r in proxiniit to the plow B', as shown in Fig. l. lpon the inner end of the pivotal pin l), supporting the disk, is pivotally mounted an adjusting-arm l), whose outer end is formed with a slot d. A clamping inacliine-scrcw d is seated in a hollow boss e, forming an integral part ol' the frame ll of the machine and projects through the slot d, Fig. l.
Fig. 2 represents a side eleval l l l i l l l l l l I l ner end of the said screw is engaged by a thumb-nut d?, by means of which, it will be seen, the arm D may be clamped securely in various positions relatively to the frame E, as will be readily understood. It will therefore be seen that the disk C may be elevated and lowered and, if desired, may be raised above the surface of the ground and then secured, so as not to exercise its function. When in use, the armB is lowered to the desired point and the mower run along a proper distance Jfrom the lawns edge. 'llie disk cuts the edge portion of the lawn and the plow separates such cut portion and throws it laterally, thereby facilitating its later removal.
ln the forni of device shown in Figs. 3 and -t the ground-wheel A is rotatably mounted in the frame E, to which is attached the liandle IC. llpon the pivotal pin a is pivotally mounted th(I arm B, having the plow B secured to its lower end and the rotatable cutting-disk C. The adjusting-arm l) is pivotally mounted as in the previously-described device and is secured to the frame E by means of the screw d and thumb-nut d2, as before. ln this form of machine the disk may be thrown over and secured as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4, the device reversed, and the disk used, when desired, as a cutteiwithout bringing into operation the plow B.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided tlie means stated by any ono of the following claims or the equivalent of such stated. means be employed.
l therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my inventionl. ln a lawn-edging device, thc combination ot' a suitable frame., an arm mounted thereon, a rotatable cutter mounted u on said arm, and a plow mounted upon the littter near the cutting edge of said cutter.
2. ln a lawn-edging device, the combina tion of a suitable frame, an adjustable arm mounted thereon, a rotatable cutter mountcd upon said arm, and a plow mounted upon the latter near the cutting edge of said cutter. Si. Vln a lawn-edging device, the combination of a suitable frame, a ground-wheel mounted thereon, an arm pivotally mounted and having its pivotal axis in the line of axis' lhc inot said wheel, means toi' fixing said arm in IOO various angular positions relatively to said l oted upon said first-named arm and having frame, a rotatable cutting-disk mounted I its pivotal axis in the line of axis of said disk, upon said arm, and a plow mounted upon the and means for securing said adjusting-arm to latter and in proximity to the cutting edge of said frame at points varying relatively to 15 said disk. each other. 4.
