Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented may 1, 1906.
pplicatiou tiled February 18,1905. Serial No. 246.344.
in it Miou n that ll. M irtimi t oiiiiitii. ol Smith `s Falls, in the rount)Y otl liauarli, lroviure ot' ttitarioy Dominion ot' Kanada, have invented ttrtain new and useful improveuuius in Ytlfiudowlills, ol' whit-h thtx l'ollowinf` s a spt 'ilit'ation.
M): invention relates to improvements in window-sills; and the ohjerts ol' in); invent ion artto provido a heap and simple metallic `sill adapted to take tht` plat'o ol' the ordinary stone or wooden sill, whorehy thtI time and lahor necessary to la); and lit this ltiml ol sill will htsavetl and a sill will he provided which will not wear or rrarli and whit'h will do away with the trouhle experiential with they .old t'orintjil' sill `when the water ran down the wall ol` thehuilding through iniptfrl'rrt throat, ing; and it ronsis'ts, essentiallv, ol" a sill prot'- erahtv formed ot'shtet metal and comprisingr a horiztwtal hed, an im'limd wattr-\\.'usl\ in'- toeral therewith and protrudiutr hoyoud the wall ol' the huildiug, a suhstautiall)v vrrtit'nl hrtast'plate integral with such \\'attr\\'ash and dow nwardly tx'trndinjg tlwrelroin, an in` wardlwtxtrlnliutg llaugge integral with the l'att ot' said l reastplat e,` and a downwardlyextentlim: wall-tgrippine tlango integral with the end otl tht` horizontal hedy the sill being;r entirely supported h); tht` horizontal portion hedtled in the wall7 the various parts ol' the device hiring mnstrurted aud arranged indetail, as hereinafter more partitularlvY dsurihtiil.
` Figure l shows a perspettivt view ol my sill with a portion otthe wall and windowfranu. Fig. 2 shows a perspective view ol the sill removed lroin the wall. Fig. I shows a sei-tional view ol' an :,tlternative l`orm whirh my sill may take. Fig. 4 shows an extensible inrtallitsill whit-h may he ronvtnieutl;Y adapted for my torni ol' sill.
ln the drawings like letters of reference indit'ate tforrt-spomlin;r parts in rath ligure.
A represents in v nietallir sill, whirh is ronstruoted ol' a suitahle rast or sheet metal and may he pressed into the required shape. lt will he understood that the partitular metal used in the ronstruetion of my sill is not the essential feature oi" my invention, which ronsists in the peculiar forni of the sill.
a is the substantially horizontal hed of the sill, which rests on top of the wall B and on which the window-frame U is ada ted to rest. A tlange a downwardly extent s from this hed and is adapted to be bedded in the Wall B, thereby holding the bed serurelp' in position. Integral with the horizontai bed a is an iiwlined portion a', which serves as a water wash or shed for the sill. Integrally Secured to the end of this portion a is the,
ing. 1t will he seen that in the ordinary torm of sill the juncture of the portions '1,3 will form the water-dr1p on the sill. bind piet-es a* are provided at each end of the sill and substantially at right angles to the iront thereof.
in thtx forni l have shown in Fig. 3 the bottoni portion o ot the sill has been omitted and tht` wall has heen hricked out to fill in the whole spare raused h v tht` projertion of the sill. "lho plating ol' this sill in .this position usuall)4 involves more labor than the other forms.
Fig. -1 shows an extensible form of my Sill, it lainff made in a plurality of portions telesropitin t'orin, whereby' the sill can be extended to an)Y desired length. This will be found ol great use in Connection with long window-sills, as they can then he handled and shipped much more readily when telescoped together.
ln certain rases, in veneertd houses, where the windovv-trames are set in hl'ore tht` hrirkint: is done, tht` flange a5 can be dispensed with or straightened out level with tht` hed and the sill ('an he temporarily se cured 'to the trame in a suitable. manner un til the hrieliwork reaches the proper level, when thts sill van he inserted in its proper place.
lt will thus he seen that I have devised .a very convenient and useful form of metallic sill, whirl: will he much better and cheaper than au)r forms of the ordinary stone or wooden sill. A very small amount of labor is ret uired to put the sill in, and it will he l'ouni a very great convenience to the builder of a house, as the windoWi-amc can be very easily set in without waiting until the wall is built level with it. Another advantage of my sill is that it prevents the frost penetrating into the house, thus making the inside of the windows much warmer in winter.
IOO
Q einen lrl'viiat l claim es my invention is- 1. A metallic window-sill comprising a substantially horizontal bed, and an ovni-honging outwardly-protruding hollow central portion integral therewith and for the purpose specified.
2. A. metallic window-sill comprising n sul)- stantially horizontal bed, a. downwardly-oxtendingr wall-gripping flange and en overhanging liollow outwnrdly-protruding control portion as and for the pur )ose speciiied.
3. A inetnllic window-sill comprising :i substantially horizontal bed, nn inclined waterwesh protruding beyond the wall of the building and n breostlute d ownii'nrdl)r extending from the front or said water-wesh as andfor the purpose specified.
A. metallic window-sill comprising n substantially horizontal bed, an inclined waterwasli integral therewith, ond protruding loeyond the well oi the building, e breast late downwardly extending from the iront o said water-wesh and e flange inwardly extending roin the fece of said breast-plate es and for the purpose specified.
5. metallic window-sill comprising a sul)- stnntialiy horizontal bed, o water-wash inte gral therewith sind `-protruding beyond the Well, of the building, s breast-plate downwardly extending from the front of said Water-wesh und inwardly extending end portions integral with said breast-plate es and for the purpose specified.
6. A metallic window-sill comprising e substantially horizontal lied, an inclined water- Wash integral therewith, and protruding loeyond the Walls of the building, a breast-plate downwardly extending from the front of said water wash, o nnge inwardly extending from the ffice of said breast-plate and inwnrdlwextending end portions integral with suid breast-plate as and for tliepurposespecii'iod.
7, An extensible metal Window-sill coniu prising; n plurality of `hollow telescopio ineinoeis us and for tlic purpose Specified.
t5. An extensible metal window-sill coniprising t plurality oi iioll W telescopio meub bers provided with hollow central portions 'adapted to extend beyond the wall of the building und top substantially horizontal beds nite-gral with said central portions as und for the purpose specified.
