INKSTAND.
Speccation of Letters Patent No. 8,188, dated July 1, 1851.
`such parts as Iclaim and desire to have secured to me by LettersPatent. A
The figures of` the accompanying plate of .drawings represent my improvements.
Figure l is a plan of my improved inkstand, and Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section taken in the plane of the line, A B, Fig.1.
The distinguishing features of my improvements are the combination of an elast-ic t diaphragm operatedby a thumb Screw working in a metallic cap` fitted over the neck of the fountain of the inkstand with the deliveringmcup and its tube (extending into said fountain through an independent opening in the topof said fountain); and the providing a sunken area about the opening for the tube of the delivering cup, sothat if the ink overflows in said cup, it will be received in said area, and by raising the tube of the cup, be permitted to flow back again into the fountain. p
a a a` a is the fountain of the inkstand which maybe formed of glass or any other` desirable material, having a neck or open-` mg at b through which the elastic diaphragm C, Fig. `2, works up and` down. This diaphragm isformed or arranged by tying the center of an india-rubber washer, @Z al, round a groove formed about the metallic button, `e, the exterior of said circular A i washer being conned in a groove round the exterior of the metallic socket, f, as shown in Fig. 2, which socket is formed as shown In said figure, and is fastened with cement atg and it, about the neck, b Z9, of the fountain, so as to make the whole arrangement air-tight, and leave a space at the center for the vertical play ofthe diaphragm C. ,i
A` metallic cap, i i, is screwed around the lower edge of the socket, f f, and has at its center a thumb screw, 7c, the lower part of `which is connected to the diaphragm C, and.
moves it up and down, as will be readily i understood b-y inspection of Fig. 2.
The delivering cup, Z, with-its tube,
i formed in the ordinary way, the` latter passi ing through an independent hole in the side of the top of the fountain and extending nearly to the botom of` said fountain; and It will be readily seen that the depressing of the elasticdiaphragm about the neck of the t fountain by the screw, la, will condense the" `air in the fountain, and make it press the ink into the cup, and by liftingjthe washer `the contrary eiect will ensue, and the ink pass back fro-m the cup to the fountain.`
There is a crescent shaped area, a n, about the cup, Z, which has a rim, 0 o, about it,
and whose bottom curves, or inclines towardthe hole in which the tube, m, of said i cup, fits;` so that any ink which is overflowe-d from said cup, may be permitted to pass back into the fountain by merely lifting the i tube, m.
I do not claim diaphragm` for inkstands; but
`I claim my inkstand as a new article of manufacture, -in which the followinor features are for the first time associated, viz:
An elastic diaphragm covered and secured from linjury by a metallic cap, and regulated by a screw passing through the cap, and in the' invention of the elastic i combination with the diaphragm the funt nel stop Z` and waste cup n..`
