TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

'Be it known that I, JOSEPE S. FIELD, of Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented a new and improved Cooking-Apparatus; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section of my improved cooking-apparatus.

Figure 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same, taken on the plane of the line a fig. 1.

Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the same, taken on the plane of the line 3 y, fig. 1.

This invention relates to a new device for boiling, by steam, various articles in one single vessel,which is l divided into various compartments by fixed partitions, so that the articles to be boiled may be separated from each other, that they might retain their original flavor.

This invention is intended as an improvement on and completion of the devices which are now used for the same purpose, and which consist of two or more vessels put one upon the other. The steam from a boiler below, entering all the vessels, boils their contents, but, as the productsof condensation are carried back to the boiler, andthen evaporated again, the flavors of the various articles become mixed, and all the dishes, when boiled, taste alike, or nearly so.

My invention consists in dividing one vessel, by horizontal or other partitions, into two or more compartments, each of which is accessible by means of a door. Through a suitable pipe, steam is conducted into all the compartments, and fills the same, so as to quicklyand thoroughly boil their contents, while the surplus steam escapes, not back into the boiler, but into the fire, or, at least, off the vessel, so as not to become mixed up with the con-tents of various compartments. The invention also consists in a novel arrangement for closing the doors of the compartments without burning the fingers, and in a new device for indicating the want of water in the boiler, and a means of supply.

A, in the drawings, represents a rectangular or other sheet-metal vessel, of suitable dimensions, open at one side, and divided, by one or more partitions, B B, into two or more compartments.

This vessel A is set or fixed upon a boiler, C, which may, if desired, form part of the whole appparatus. The water is poured into the boiler O through a pipe, D, which is arranged on the outside. of the apparatus, as shown, and which communicates with the boiler 0 through a small hole, a, near the bottom of the same. The water, standing in the pipe as high as in the boiler, will remain cool, even if that in the boiler is steaming. Only if the water in the boiler is below the upper part of the hole a will steam escape through the pipe D, and its rise will thereby indicate that water is needed in the boiler.

F is a line, which extends from the boiler (l up through each compartment of the vessel A, and is formed by a false wall, 6, as shown. The flue is perforated, as shown, so as to discharge the steam from the boiler into each one of the compartments of the vessel A. From the uppermost compartment, 0, of the vessel extends a pipe, G, through the flue F, and, through the boiler G, into the fire, the upper end of the pipe G being open, so that it will discharge all surplus steam into the fire.

Into each compartment can be fitted a vessel, H, with corrugated bottom, as shown. The articles to be cooked are placed into these vessels H, and then the compartments are closed by shutting the close-fitting doors I I. These doors are hinged to the box A, one or more to each compartment, and close against rubber or other packing-strips, cl, as shown. The swinging ends of the doors carry books, on, which catch over flanges,f, on the box, as in fig. 3.

When the vessel is thus firmly closed, all the contents will be thoroughly stcamed,'and, consequently, boiled. The products of condensation, running down the sides in each compartment, will been the bottom thereof, under the corrugated bottoms of the vessels H, and will thereby not be' in the way of the articles to be boiled.

On the outer part of each hook or set of hooks e, of each door I, isarranged an upright wooden handle, 9,

and another upright wooden handle, it, is attached to the box A, as shown in fig. 3. -On the edge of each door is also a wooden upright strip, 2', as shown. These three wooden strips, g, 'h, andz', form one complete set of handles, for conveniently opening and closing the doors without coming in contact with the heated metal box or door. I

It will be seen that this apparatus, when made as described, is conveniently handled. In those now in use,

it is a source of great discomfort that the vessels cannot well be taken apart while the boiling is going on, as

they are too hot. 7 By providing the doors and the wooden handles, any one article can be inspected without the least'inconvenience or trouble, and without disturbing the cooking-processes going on in the other compartments.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new,- Jandd esire to secure by Letters Patent,is-

1. The apparatus for cooking by steam, when made. to be one complete and inseparable vessel, having distinct compartments, for the reception of pans or dishes, each compartment provided with a door, and so arranged that they are all supplied with steam from a commonboiler, by means of a side fine, having one of its Walls perforated, as herein shown and described. I

2.- The vessel A, when divided, by means of partitions B, into compartments, which are connected, by means of the flue F, with a boiler,'C, each compartment provided with steamtight doors I, and the flue F and boiler admitting of the passage-pipe G, arranged as described, for the purpose specified.
