I rwelzal" Charles E Sml'f/L dito/we y U NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES r. SMITH, OF BRIDCEPORT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR To CON- TINRNTAL PAPER RAC COMPANY, A CORPORATION vOP MAINE.
CUTTING. MEoHANlsM.
Specification of Iietters Patent.
Patented April 24, 1906.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutting Mechanism, of which the following is a specifiation. y
This invention relates to cutting mechanism,`particularly to that class of such mechanism as is employed for severing a continuous web of paper into blanks or sections of uniform and predetermined length.
In the drawings accompanying this speciiication is illustrated a machine embodyin one form and which may be the preferre form of my invention, and wherein- Figure l is a plan view thereof. Fig. 2 is a side elevation corresponding with Fig. 1 and with side frame 2 omitted to better show those parts which would otherwise be obscured. Fig. 3 is a plan view of float F, and Fig. 4 is a detailed view ofthe cutting-blades.
My invention is peculiarly applicable in connection with paper-b ag machines in which it is desired to sever a continuous paper tube into lengths suitable for bag-blanks. Such paper tubing may be a simple flat tube, or said tube may be provided with an inwardlyfolded tuck in each side thereof.
My improved mechanism is also adapted for severing continuous webs, tubular or otherwise, having other forms of cross-section, or for severing flat continuous single, double, or multiple ply webs and all of the plies of which may pass above the float or a part above and a art below.
It is particular y desirable in severing paper tubing into bag-blank sections to provide at the forward end thereof a difference in length of the upper andlower plies, so that one ply may be gripped by the ba -bottomforming mechanism without invo ving the other ply. Preferably the upper ply of the tubular blank is cut back, whereby the lower ply is allowed to project in front thereof. This provides at the other end of the blank, and which other end is later the mouth ofthe finished bag, a rearwardly-extending lip on the upper ply, whereby the bag-mouth may be conveniently opened for use. My improved machine provides for the severing of paper tubing and for the formation in severing on the ends of each Section thereof of projecting portions, as described.
The machine illustrated in the drawings comprises side frames 2 3, in which may be supported the various parts of the mechanism. These side frames may be secured in suitable relation to each other by tie-frames 4 5, extending therebetween and fastened at their ends, respectively, to Said side frames by bolts, as 6.
At F in the left-hand or entering end of the machine is shown the delivery end of some suitable tube-forming mechanism. This member F is in the nature of a float and is of suitable Width to ass through an opening between feed rol s 7 8. This opening is formed by oppOsitely-disposed reduced portions 9 in said rolls. Float F lies within and is surrounded by the paper tube which it is desired to sever. If said tube is provided with inwardly-folded tucks, said tucks are preferably disposed below the float.
My improved machine is provided with two pairs of feed-rolls 7 8 and 11 12, respectively, and which two pairs of rolls are driven at the same surface Speed from pulley 10 by means of suitable gearin This gearing is as follows'. Turning free y upon stud 13, which stu'd projects outwardly from frame 3, is driving-gear 14. Pulley 10 is fast to said gear and turns with it about stud 13. Rolls 7 8 are supported for revolution u on shafts 15 16, res ectively, and which sha s are provided wit suitable bearings in brackets 18 19, upstanding from frames 2 3, respectively. Shafts 15 16 are provided with intermeshing gears 21 22, respectively, and lower gear 22 is engaged by driving-gear 14. Upstanding and inreaching from frame 3 is bracket 17, and in which bracket are formed bearings for three shafts. One of these three shafts 2() has fixed on its outboard end gear 23, meshing on the one side with driving-gear 14and on the other side with idle gear 24 on stud 26. Feed-rolls 11 12 are mounted for revolution on shafts 27 28, respectively, and which shafts are provided with suitable bearings in brackets 30 31, upstanding from frames 2 3, respectively. Shafts 27 28 are provided with intermeshing gears 33 34, respectively, the lowerone 34 of which meshes with idle gear 24. By Y the train of gears just described the two sets of feed-rolls 7 8 and 11 12, respectively, may
be driven to feed the web of paper in the dilreotion of arrow A.
On the inboard end of shaft 2O and located about midway of side frames 2 3 is roll 25. Said roll is keyed to said shaft and turns therewith as driven by gear 23 on the outboard end of said shaft 20. In one side of said roll, reachinor inwardly from the periphery thereof and located, preferably, oblique to the radius at its mouth, is a slot 29 for convenience throughout the length of said roll and in the present instance parallel to the axis thereof. In said slot is secured knife 32, having a serrated edge 35 projecting slightly above the periphery of the roll. The teeth 47 of said serrated edge are preferably V- sha ed, but may be of any other suitable pro -e. The forward end of float F is supported by said roll and is provided with a series .of contiguous slots or grooves 36, through which the teeth 47 of serrated edge 35 of blade 32 sweep in their revolution about shaft 20. Said grooves lie lengthwise of float F, and the series extends entirely across said float. These grooves are spaced the same distance apart as the teeth of blade 32, so that during the time of coaction of float F and blade 32 each slot has a tooth in engagement therewith, whereby a continuous cuttino-line is maintained across the whole wi th of float F. Said slots or grooves 36 approximately conform in rofile of crosssection to the profile of teet 47 and in profile of longitudinal section approximately to the arc described by said teeth durin their engagement with said slots. Preferab y said slots conform in profile of longitudinal section to an arc of a circle having a slightlygreater radius than that of teeth 47, whereby 1n operation said teeth do not commence to cut the paper until after those teeth have entered sald grooves a short distance, whereby said cutting is performed gradually, or said grooves may be of reater length, 1f desired.
Above float Fa istance equal to the distance of shaft 20 below said float is shaft 50. Said shaft 50 has mounted thereon carrier 37 for blade 38. Said carrier is preferably adjustably secured to said shaft, as by clampscrews 39. Blade 38 may be secured to carrier 37 by any suitable means, such as screws 41. Said blade may be a flat plate similar to blade 32; but in the present instance said blade 38 is illustrated as having a transverse profile curved rearwardly toward the middle thereof, and the seat therefor on carrier 37 is curved to correspond. Blade 38 is also rovided with a serrated edge 42, whose teet 43 are of the same character as teeth 47 of blade 32 and are spaced for engagement with grooves 46 in the upper side of float F as teeth 47 of blade 32 enga e with grooves 36 on the under side of said oat. Alsogrooves 46 are of the same character as grooves 36.
l-p y Roll-shaft 20 also has fixed thereto ear 44, meshing with equal gear 45 on roll-s aft 50, whereby blades 32 38 are caused to rotate at the same speed. Also shafts 20 50 are preferably located out of one vertical plane, so that grooves 36 46 will not out into each other, and thereby unduly weaken float F. Gear 23 has a pitch radius somewhat less than the radius of the serrated edge 35 of blade 32 or than the equal radius of serrated edge 42 of blade 38, whereby said edges are caused to travel slightly faster than the surface speed of feed-rolls 7 8 or 11 12. Near shaft 50 and between it and roll 11 is roll 48, fixed to shaft 49, and which shaft is mounted for rotation in bracket 17. On the rearward end of shaft 49 is fixed gear 51, and which gear is driven from gear 24 through idle gear 52. Said gearing-is so proportioned that roll 48 is driven at the same surface s eed as rolls 7 8 and 11 12 and is provided to old float F down in position for engagement with blade 32,`or, if desired, carrier 37 may be in the form of a roll similar to roll 25, and'in that case said carrier 37 would be eflicient to hold float F down against any upward pressure of blade or knife 32. Roll 48 could thus be dispensed with, or knife 32 may be mounted in a carrier similar to carrier`37 and oat F sustained in roper alinement by independent rolls or ot erwise. In case it is desired to sever a continuous web traveling on the u per side only of float F said float may be 1n the nature of a permanent table and supported, for instance, as table 54 is supported.
On shaft 53 is supported table 54. Said table is bent downward at 55 to allow the advancing tubular web of paper to pass thereover. Said table is mortised at 56 to allow roll 12 to project upwardly therethrough for coaction with roll 11.
Rolls 11 12 are provided with a take-up device for increasmg the speed during a small increment of time of that portion of the tubular web of pa er in advance of the portions thereof whic have been acted upon by blades 32 38 and whereby if said blades have failed to wholly separate the web said takeup device will complete that se aration. Said take-up device comprises a ri 57, extendin across one of the rolls, as 11, and parallel with the axis thereof. Said rib projects beyond the periphery of said roll and engages with a com lementary groove 58 in ro l 12. Said rib an groove may be formed integral with the rolls, respectively, or for convenience may be fashioned in separate pieces and inserted in said rolls, as shown at 59 60, respectively.
The operation of my improved mechanism is as follows: Suitable paper tubing either with or without an inwardly-folded tuck in each side thereof being delivered around float F and into the grip of rolls 7 8, the machine is -loo NCHING SHEETS & BARS,
ting, Machines,
started in the direction indicated by the arrow on pulley 10. If tucked tubinr is used, said tubing may be fed into the machine with the tucks either above or below the oat; but when my improved mechanism is used in connection with paper-bag machinery it is customary and deslrable to feed the tucks under the float. The tubing is then fed forwardly about float F, as indicated by arrow ro A, until the revolution of blade 38 brings those teeth 43 nearest the opposite sides of said blade into contact with that ply of the paper tube above the float. These teeth thereupon force the paper under them down into those grooves 46 corresponding with the end teeth of blade 38. Said blade then continues its revolution in an anticlockwise direction, and-said`end teeth successfullyvper: forate and fully severfth'elupegply Lofwthe zo tube at its edges/-, Then working inwardly the succ'ess'iv'eteeth of blade 38 repeat the operation on successive portions of the upper ply of the paper tube until that upper ply is severed throughout the whole width thereof. Any downward pressure that may be exerted by blade 38 against the ioat is sustained by the periphery of roll 25, which roll is revolving with a surface speed equal or about equal to that of the paper. AtI about the time of the completion of the severance of the upper ply of the paper tubeblade 32 asses into engagement with the lower ply or plies of said tube. Lower blade 3 2, as illustrated, has a cuttinor edge parallel with its axis of revolution wiereby all of teeth 47 pass into action at the same time and successively perforate and sever the ortions of the tube lying below float F. Xs the curvature of blade 38 is rearward toward the middle thereof, the upper ply of the paper tube has a similar rearwardly-reaching curved line of severance, while the lower ply thereof has a straight line of severance. The forward edge of the upper ply being thus cut back toward the middle portion 'thereof leaves the forward part of the lower rly exposed to be conveniently gripped wit out involving the upper ply. In most cases the successive operations of the upper and lower blades, respectively, will entirely sever the advanced section of paper tube from the main web thereof, and the o eration of my improved machine be there y completed at this point; but occa- SOHally Vlth 9l`il}kinds pfpaperjf blades 32.38are not carefully adusted one'omi of the edges of the flat tube where said edges 6o by 'rolls 1 1 12between tension members Q'Zj,
lie around the lateral edges, respectively, of float F will not be comp etely severed. In such cases as the partly-severed section is fed thereon, respectively` s-llwmm will be momentarily Md1 "i ardatanltary Cutter, Notchcd Work- 8'18713 "v rmain tube-section is rigidly held by rolls 7 8, this take-up action of members 57 58 will result in the pulling apart of any filaments of paper left uncut by blades 32 38, and thereby cobmplete the operation of severing the paper tu e.
Various profiles of severance of either the upper or lower plies of the paper tube may be had by forming one or both of blades 32 38 to correspond with such desired rofiles. Always, however, the severanceines must at least approximately meet at each side of the flat tube, so as not to leave an excessive amount of aper to be severed by the tension means. I it is desired to sever a continuous web passing over the upper face only of fioat F, knife 32 and roll 25 may be omitted.
I claim- 1.
