Be it known that 1, FRANK O. WoonLANn, a citizen of the United States, residing at VorCester, in the county of W'orcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improved Labeling-Machine, of which the following, together with the accompanying drawings, is a specification suficiently full, clear, and exact to enable persons skilled in the art to which this invention appertains to make and use the saine. The object of my present invention is to provide a labeling-machine of efhcient capacit simple in construction, and convenient for rapid operation; and my invention consists in mechanism embodying the special features of improvement and the combined organizationsset forth and explained in the following detailed description and particularly defined in the summary.

To facilitate this interchange and for securing the pickers F to the fingers I, the pickers of the several different forms or sizes are each provided with a similar-shaped slotted ear or projection 1?,each being adapted to seat in similarmanner and Iposition upon the end portion of the finger, where the picker is firmly but detachably secured b a clampbolt or cap-screw p, arranged through the vslotted ear portion and threaded into the metal of the finger, as best shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4. By merely loosening the capscrews the picker is freed so that it can be takenyo and quickly exchanged or replaced on the finger when desired. In the present instance the label-holder y ment of the label-holder andthe pickerdeyss vices, the one moving on a curve, the other on a line that intersects said curve at a certain rearward position, so that the pickers fall upon the labels supported uponthe holder gradually but with certain precision.

holding the wiper-pads against the label as `the bottle is forced through the passway I rovide a pair of levers E, fulcrumed at their ower ends, preferably upon the wiper-stands C, as at e, and each having at the top end a bar, finger, or roller 3, that extends along the under surface of the wiper D-one at each side of the passivay-and approximately parallel with each other, their normal idle position being near the free ends of the wipers. These arms or levers are crossed so that their top ends 3 can swing oppositely outward toward the stands C. The two arms are connected by a pivotally-attaclied bar E, that causes them to move in unison, and stop-lugs 4 are provided to arrest the inward swing of the levers when the followers are at their normal position. A spring or springs connected with the levers imparts yielding resistance to their action. employedone of moderate tension connected to exert its force at the commencement of the follower action and the other connected by a lost-motion loop or eye in a manner to exert its force after the follower has moved back for a given distance, it then being brought into action to augment' the resistance of the followers as the wipers press the sides-of the bottle. l i
The connecting-bar E may, when desired, be provided with a guard-tongue 27 (see Fig. 3) to ward off the end of the bottle from striking the levers, or in other instances said guard-tongue maybe omitted, as in Fig. 2.
The function of the arms E and followers 3 is to 'cause the flexible wipers to hug the label to the sides of the bottle in a more perfect and efficient manner than would otherwise be e'ected and to vary the direction of pressure as the rotundity of the bottle changes its relation or location in passing the stationarilysupported wipers. l
A depending end gage 29, adjustably secured to a rearwardly-projecting arm of the serves for ga ing the position of the bottle when placed or receiving the label, The bottle is indicated by dotted lines in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 6.
For the central retention of the label against the bottle I provide an under jaw appliance or roller grip device carried by a yieldable supporter and adapted to permit withdrawal of the bottle without first'niechanically releasing orv throwing off the gip. This griproll by its free rotation permits of the bottle being easily drawn out eiidwise after it has passed the wipers and without disturbing or vinjuring the'recently-attached label.
An actuating-lever 48, fulcrumed at 49, has one arm connected by a link-bar 44 for moving the carrier-supporting arms K, while its other arm is connected. by a suitable link-bar 45 for moving the vertically -reciprocating usher-head M and devices that are connected therewith. The actuating -lever 48 is joined by a connection-rod 50 with one arm of a rocker-lever 51, fulcruined on the base A of the frame-standard a, and the other arm of said rocker-lever extends upward outside the base and is provided with a stud or roll 52, that engages in the groove of a camwheel 53, mounted on a shaft ory axis 54, supported in suitable bearings e on the framestandard base. A drive wheel or` pulley .is mounted on said shaft, and an automatic stop-clutch 56 is provided between the pulley and cam, whereby the cani can be clutched to rotate with the pulley or released to remain inactive. An angle-lever 57, pivoted on the base at 58, has one arm fitted forputting the clutch into engagement and throwing off the same, while its other arm is 'fitted as a treadle 59 to be depressed by the foot of the operator. A suitable spring is employed in connection with the starting-lever for pressing up Athe treadle and swinging the lever into position for throwing ofi the clutch and stopping the rotation of the cani. The clutch may be of any suitable construction or may consist of a longitudinally -sliding spring-pressed dog fitted in the hub of the cam and adapted to lock into a hold or recess in the side of the pulley-hub, said dog having a projecting lug that runs, onto the inclined side of the starting-lever for retraction of the dog in opposition to its spring and to auto- 'matically release the cani from the pulley. Avspring 64 is provided for retracting or swinging said arm to its normal position of alinement with the path of the cam, at which position the end of the arm rests against a stop-lug 63, fixed on the bottom of the boxjlrbut said spring permits a yielding action of said arm laterally. When the tumbler-cam moves rearward, its face passes `beneath the face of the roll 65, andelevationv of the paste-box is thereby effected but with the reverse movement of the tumbler-cam the yielding of the spring 64 `as the cam strikes the detent or roll 65 allowsthe arm to swing laterally, thereby throwingsaid roll out of alinement, so that the cam passes.

I If preferred, a lifting-spring 26 may be employed in lieu at the frictional device 15 and Aincline 16 for controlling or readjusting the level of the label-supply holder as it returns to primary position, and vsaid spring.` can be arranged as illustrated in Fig. 13 or in other suitable manner. One or two springs 26 connect with an arm 24, attached to thestem 9 and tothe bed-piece H', and a' stop-pin 42 is fixed in the stem to arrest the parts at normal position of readjusted level.
Havingset forth and explained the nature of the invention anddescribed one preferred embodiment of the same and the manner of its operation without attempting to enumerate all of the forms in which it'mayfbe made or modified by mere skill'in 'the art without departing from the principles and` scope of the invention, l declare that' what I claim,

1. A labelingmachine comprising a mov- .able vcarrierfmeans' for pasting and `picking `up a .label mounted'on said carrier, means for reciprocating'said carrier in an arched line of ,movement a paste-box having paste-delivering meanspelevating devicesv 'that move the paste-box toward the path ofthe pastingpickers, a label-holder, a reciprocating labelholder support movable in a general directinjwithl said carrier, but on a., line differential to that of the carrier movement, and means for effecting uniform rate ofv move- IIO` ment for the pickers and label-holder as they converge and recede. 2. A labeling-machine, comprising, in com- I allel-swinging supports for said carrier, a pair box and of picker-fingers supported by vertical pivots on said carrier, pasting-pickers detachably secured to said fingers, a paste-receptacle and paste-distributing means, an edgewis'emovable label-holder, means for guiding the label-holder, means for moving said carrier and pickers over the paste distributing means, and to a position rearward of the normal'position of said label-holder while the pickers act at coincident relation to the labels, and to effect 'synchronous convergent terminal movements of the same, for the purpose set forth. j
3. A labeling-machine lcomprising a carrier mounted on upwardly-projecting parallel swinging supports, a pair oflaterallyswinging arms pivoted on said carrier, a contractile spring and stops for said arms, pasting-pickers attached to said arms, a pasteaste-.deliverinv roller, means for moving said paste-box to bring the roller into contact with the pasting-pickers, a labelholder having means for retaining a pile of labels thereon, a rearwardly and forwardly movable label-holder bed, guides therefor, a label-holder standard yield-ably sustained in said bed, means for effecting a movement of said label-holder and its bed in unison with the movement' of the pasting-pickers, and means for readjusting the level of the labelholder in relation to its bed as it returns to primary position. o
l 4. A labeling-machine, comprising an oscillatory carrier carrying means for pasting and picking up a label, a label-supply holder, a carrier-supporting means that maintains the plane of the carrier and picking-up devices relatively parallel to the plane of the labelholder during the oscillatory movement, a paste-rece tacle having paste-delivering roll, means idrmoving said carrier to pass the pasting-pickers in contact with the paste-delivering roll, and into alinement with the label-supply holder, and means for reciprocating the label-supply holder with the carrier, ateach movement of the carrier, and means for returnlng the carrier to forward position with the label out of contact withv the paste-delivering'roll.
5. In a labeling-machine, in combination with the transferring-carrier and pastingickers carried thereon a label-holder bed ackwardly and forwardly movable on a line differentially approaching that of said carrier, a label-holder su ported and vertically adjustable in said be afriction grip device for normally sustaining the adjustment thereof, an automatically-engaging means for eectin movement of the fabel-holder bed and ho Ader with the rear portion of the carrier movement, and a cam' or incline that readjusts the label-holder in its bed as it returns to primary position.
. 6. Ina labeling-machine, and in combination, a label-carrier having oscillative movement, picker-arms pivotally mou ted on said carrier, pasting-pickers attached di) said arms, means for supplying paste to said pickers, means for delivering a label to said pickers, label-wiping devices, and a reciprocating pusher having means for passing the bottle etween the wipers, said picker-arms and said pusher being provided withcoactingmembers whereby a positive outward swing or lateral movement is imparted to said picker-arms and paster-pickers by the prime downward action of said pusher.
7. In a labeling-machine provided with a label-transferring carrier, wiperfdevices, and a reciprocating bottle-pusher mechanism, the laterally-swinging picker-arms pivotally mounted on said carrier and having the pasting-pickers supported thereon, said pickerarms respectively provided with extension members, in combination, with, the bottlepusher head having inclined cam projections thereon that act against said extension members for laterally spreading the `picker-arms.
8. Ina labeling-machine, the combination, of a flexible wiper, and a resistance-follower acting against the back or reverse surface of said wiper with ayieldable pressure, and movable along the wiper-surface.
9. In a labeling-machine,a label-wiping mechanism comprising a pair of stationary wiper-stands, oppositely-disposed wipers of moderately flexible 'material respectively fixed to said stands, laterally-movable followers upholding the free portions of said wipers and carried by laterally-swinging arms, and a spring, or springs, connected with said arms for pressing the wiper-'followers toward their normal or primary position with a yielding resistance.
10. The combination, with 'the flexible resilient rectangular wipers, supports for one edge thereof, their opposite edges free and projecting into the passway; of separate movable wiper-upholding followers adapted to press said wipers toward the bottle and to retreat with a yielding resistance, by lateral and downward swing'movement toward the wiper-supports, as the bottle goes through the passway between the wipers.
11. In a labeling-machine, in combination, a pair of oppositely-disposed flexible flapwipers, means for the stationarysupport of the outer edges of said wipers, a pair of parallel roller-followers rolling against the under surface of the wipers toward and from their -Hexible ends, Imeansl for supporting said follower-rollers to uphold the working portion of the wiper-flap, and means for imparting a yielding resistance to outward movement of said followers.
I O "i" l2. l'n a labeling-machine, in .combination with means for pasting and delivering the labels, and means for passing a bottle through the wipers the'stationary wiper-stands, ilexible wiper-flaps secured at one edge to said stands, crossed swinging arms pivoted at the foot thereof and provided at their tops with parallel bars or rollers that move along the under surface of the wipers, springs that ro force said arms inward, a pivo'tally-attached cross-bar connecting said arms, anda guardton'gue formed on said bar and projecting' in front of the arms, for the )urpose set forth.
13. In combination witli means for pasting and presenting a label; .of the wiperstands, inwardly-projecting flexible resilient wipers iixed on said stands, resistance-followers acting beneath and against said wipers, follower-levers oppositely fulcrumed at .the 2o base of said stands and swinging said followers laterally' toward andA from each other,'
.means for insuring uniform movement of the followers, a spring, or springs, connecting the levers, stops for limiting their approach, and means for pushing a bottle between the pair of wipers and followers.
v14.` In a labeling-machine, a pair of pasting-pickers, a movable carrier therefor with laterally-yieldable sup orts for said pickers, a pair of wipers, and alalicl-oenter stay comprising a yicldable grip device. in combination with a reciprocating pusher-head, and means (.'ontrollcd by the pusher-head for simultaneously spreading said pickers laterally; advancing the bottle to the label and wipers, and. raising said grip device into holding position against the label, by the movement of said pusher-head.
15. In a labeling machine, the combination, 40 with means for pasting and delivering a label,
a pusher mechanism for advancing the labelreceivin@r article between the wipers, and a pair of fibxible wipers supported at one edve'; ol' a )air of yieldinor resistance-followers or upholding the flexib e portion of said wipers,
and a plurality of springs for eecting retroacrion of the followers, said springs being arranged to progressively come into action for augmenting-the resistance as the space between followers is increased. i
16. In a labeling-machine, a pair of upright wiper-stands united at their feet, a pair ofoppositely-swinging arms pivotally connected with saidstands and having at their` upper ends parallel follower-fingers, a spring or springs acting to press said follower-arms toward each other, means for insuring uniform movement of said followerarms, and inwardly-projecting flexible wiper-'flaps having their outer edges respectively ,secured to said wiper-stands, and their flexible ends resting upon said followers.

flexible wiper-flaps, laterally movable followers beneath said wipers, and a reciprocating pusher-head having means for conducting ay bottle through said wipers: of alabel-center grip comprising a rotatable elastic roller mounted on a transverse axis in`a verticallyswi ging arm hinged to a support connected with the pusher-head, a spring acting toy ele- ,vate the ree end of said arm, and a projection or finger carried on said arm and ada' tr ed to engage beneath the wiper or wiperollower, for the purpose set forth. The combin ation of a pairof wiping-on devices, means .for pasting and delivering a' label adjacent to said wi ers, a sliding pusher'-l head, guide-rods there or, a bottle-pushing brace secured to said pusher-head, a labelgrippin' means provided with a 'yielding grip-rol er disposed asa jaw in opposite relation to said pushing-brace, ajsupport for said labelgripping means moving with the pusher-head, and a connecting-link joining said pusher-head with the actuator means ywhich works the label-delivering appliances.
20. In alabeling-machine, the combination, with the supporting-frame, oscillating carrier having pasting-pickers, swing-ing, carrier-supports, bottle-pusher head, the actuator-lever and. connection- (inks for moving said carrier and pusher-hea of the rocker-lever fulcrumed on the frame-base, the revoluble cam en avin one arm of said rocker-lever .the
rod connecting the other arm with said actuator-lever, a drive-pulley and an autematic stop-clutchfor the cam, anda clutch-controlling lever pivoted on the base and provided with a toe-treadle and a reactingl spring, substantially as set forth. l. f
21. In a labeling-machine, for the purpose set forth, a label-holder having rearward and forward reciprocative .action from la predetermined position at its front limit, and provided with label-supporting guide devices thereon, those for the rear edge of the labels being ad-justably mounted upon thel holderplate and provided with Ameans -overhanging the edge of the label-pack; in combination withy paste-applying pickers that reciprocatively move into conjunction with said holder for taking labels therefrom. 4 1 p l .22. 'with the pasting-pickers, the label-holder plateprovided with uprighty label-supporting IOO guards perpendicular to the plane of said j plate, and means for moving the pickers onto and from the top of a pile of labels seated upon said plate; of a finger device carried upon the holder- )late and projecting over the top of the labells resting thereon, said finger device being arranged for automatic or v spring-pressed arm carried upon the pusher and having the grip-roll axle mounted thereon, a spring for normally pressing said arm toward the bottle, and means for arresting the approach movement of said arm and griproll when adjacent to,/but before it reaches the primal position of the delivered label,for the purpose set forth.
24. In a labeling-machine, in combination with means for pasting, placing and wiping on labels, a transferring-carrier carrying paste'- applying pickers, a reciprocating bed movable backward and forward in line with said carrier, a vertically-movable label-holder stand lyieldably supported on said bed, a detachable label-holder plate mounted on said Stand, label-holding guide devices thereon adjustable in relation to the axis of the stand, means for elevating said label-holder stand in relation to the bed, and means for reciprocating said bed and parts supported thereon, synchronous with the action of the transfer-A ring-carrier.
25. In a labeling-machine, in combination, Witha reciprocating means for pastin and delivering labels; a vertically-movable label.- holder carried u on a horizontally-movable bed, and means or moving said bed and label-holder to bring the latter* into the path of said asting and delivering means', and to travel) in unison therewith while taking a laf bel from said holder.
