To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CLIFTON H. WHEELER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Oondensers,-of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to condensers, and particularly to surface condensers, the waterboxes therefor, and the bonnets for the same.
The object of my present invention is the provision of the aforesaid parts as applied to a surface condenser and so constructed that the course of circulating water through the condenser itself is such that the condensertubes are flooded at all times, thereby obtaining the efficiency which maintains when this condition exists and that without resort- I tending centrally and exteriorly across the same and providing a passage-way between the nozzle and the water-box, and that compartment within the water-box which is most remote from the said nozzle, as will be here-' inafter more particularly described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a central vertical section of a surface condenser embodying my improvement, the condenser being shown as broken to economize space. Fig. 2 is a section on line as m of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is an end view of the condenser.
Referring particularly to the drawings, a designates the condenser-shell, which is conveniently made of cast metal and is either cylindrical or rectangular in cross-section, as may be desired. At the opposite ends thereof the condenser-body a is provided with flanges 2, and in each end a tube-plate b is employed, within and extending between which and through the condenser-body are the condenser tubes 0, which may be arranged in several banks, as may be required. At each end of the condenser-body I employ a water-box and a suitable bonnet therefor, which are similar in construction and secured to the respective condenser ends in diamet rically opposite positions.
Considering the right-hand end of the condenser, which for the present purposes will be considered the intake end, (i designates a water-box comprising a suitable shell having flanges 3, corresponding to the flanges 2 of the ends of the condenser-body. The water box (1, as illustrated, is provided with a transverse partition-wall e, dividing the interior of the water box into two compartments of unequal size. This water-box d is also provided with an intake-nozzle f, the passage through which preferably turns at right angles and terminates in an opening 4. The water-box d is provided with a bonnet h, having flanges 5, corresponding with the flanges 3 of the Water-box and by means of which, through the intervention of bolts or otherwise, the parts are secured together.
The bonnet h is provided exteriorly with a throat t, extending centrally across the same and providing a passage-way 6, terminating at its lower end in an opening 7, communieating with the opening 4, and thereby with the nozzle f, and at its upper end in an opening 8, communicating with the compartment 9 in the water-box d, the inner face of the bonnet, together with the partition-wall e and a portion of the shell of the water-box d, inclosing the other compartment 10 in the water-box, and moreover, if so desired, the
bonnet k may be provided with hand-hole covers 11, located in suitable positions.
From the foregoing description and the statement that the water-boxes and the bonnets therefor are alike, being placed in re versed positions, it will be manifest that the water-box d on the left-hand or discharge end of the condenser is similar to the water-box d. The partition-wall 6 corresponds to the partition-Wall e, the nozzle f to the nozzle f, the bonnet h to the bonnet 7b, the throat t to the throat t, and the passage-way 14 therein with the passage-way 6 in the throat i.
It will also be manifest that in the operation of the apparatus, circulating water being admitted at the nozzle f, the same will pass through the said nozzle, through the passage-way 6 in the throat i to the compartment 9 in the Water-box d, thence through the upper bank of tubes to the compartment 12 in the water-box d, through the central bank of tubes to the compartment 10 in the water-box d, thence through the lower bank of tubes to the compartment 13 in the waterbox (1, through the passage-way 14 in the throat 'L to the discharge nozzle f, and thence to the waste-pipe or suitable coolingtower, if the same is employed, and. in this construction it will be apparent that the cir culating water is caused to pass through and leave the condenser in such a manner that all of the condenser-tubes at all times in the operation of the apparatus will be flooded.
I claim as my invention 1. In a condenser, an end comprisin a water-box divided into compartments of varying sizes, a nozzle on the said water-box, a bonnet secured to the said water-box and a throat on the said bonnet opening interiorly at its opposite ends with the same in communication respectively with the said nozzle and that compartment of the water-box most remote from the nozzle.
2. In a condenser, an end comprising a water-box, a partition-wall dividing the interior of the water-box into two compartments of different sizes, a nozzle on the said water box, a bonnet secured, to the said water-box and a throat on the said bonnet opening interiorly at its opposite ends with the same in communication respectively with the said nozzle and the smaller of the said compartments in the water-box.
3. In a condenser, an end comprising a water-box, a partition-wall dividing the interior of the water-box into two compartments of different sizes, a nozzle on the said waterbox, a bonnet secured to the said water-box and a throat extending centrally and exteriorly across the said bonnet and providing a passage-way opening interiorly at its opposite ends with the same in communication respectively with the said nozzle and the smaller of the said compartments in the water-box.
4. A condenser comprising a body, tubeplates, tubes extending through the said condenser-body and secured at their opposite ends in the said tube-plates, ends for the said condenser-body alike and secured to the respective ends in diametrically opposite positions, each condenser end comprising a water-box divided into compartments of varying sizes, a nozzle secured to the water-box, a bonnet also secured to the water-box and a throat on the said water-box providing a passage way opening interiorly at its opposite ends with the same in communication respectively with the said nozzle and the compartment in the water-box most remote from the nozzle, so that in the circulation of water through the apparatus, the condenser-tubes are flooded at all times.
5. A condenser comprising a body, tubeplates, tubes extending through the said condenser-body and secured at their opposite ends in the said tube-plates, ends for the said condenser-body alike and secured to the respective ends in diametrically opposite positions, a water-box, a partition-wall extending transversely across the interior of the said water-box and dividing the same into two compartments of different sizes, a nozzle on the said water-box, a throat on the said nozzle, providing a passage-way opening interiorly at its opposite ends with the same in communication respectively with the said nozzle and the smaller of the said compartments in the water-box.
6. In a condenser, a water-boxend divided by a partition into compartments of varying sizes and a nozzle having a side aperture, a bonnet secured to said water-box and a throat forming a part thereof and spanning one of said compartments and interiorly communicatin at its opposite ends with the side aperture 0% the nozzle and the compartment of the water-box most remote from the nozzle.
