To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT J. HEWETT, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of Westfield, county of Union, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electrical Devices and Circuits, of which the followingis a specificati on.
This invention relates to improvements in electrical devices and circuits, and more particularly to such as are adapted and designed for use in connection with electric signaling systems for railways.
The invention seeks to provide an ar rangement whereby an economy of current consumption may beefi'ected in operating a relay.
The invention is more particularly useful in connection with what is known as a trackrelay.
In track-signal work the term track-relay is generally applied to the relay located at the entering end of a track-section. It is energized or responsive when there is no train in the tracksection and is deenergiz'ed or made unresponsive by the presence of a train in the track-section. It is used in connection with signals normally at danger and also in connection with signals normally at clear or safety position.
The term clearing-relay is generally applied to the relay located at the exit end of a I track-section and is used in connection with signals normally at danger. The clearingrelay is de'energized or unresponsive when there is no train in the track-section and is energized, or made res onsive by the presence of a train in the traclE-section.
The accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, shows one block of a signaling system having the signal normally at .safety.
The track-relays associated with the sys tem show the inventionin three different forms. 1
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, 1, 2, and 3 are subsections of the track-section or block, having three 's'ta tions A, B, and C. The signal 4, which guards the section or block, is normally at safety. The magnet 5, connected in circuit with the battery 6 and circuit-controller 7, represents the motor-controlling magnet for the signal. Magnet-coils 8 and 12 are the magnet-coils of the track-relay at station A.

9 and 10 are the lead-wires from subsection 1 to this relay. Magnet-coil 8 is connected on one side with wire 9 and is connected on its other side with wire 10 through movable contact 11. Magnet-coil 12 is connected on one side by wire 13 with wire 9 and is connected on its other side by wire 14 and movable contact 15 with wire 10. Movable contacts 11 and 15 constitute the circuit-changer. When this circuit-changer is in the position shown in the drawing, magnetcoil 8 is included in the track-circuit and magnet-coil 12 is excluded therefrom. I/Vhen the circuit-changer is in its other position, magnet-coil 8 is excluded from thetrack-circuit and magnetcoil 12 is included in said circuit. In this latter position contact 1'1 will be open and contact 15 will be closed. The circu t-changer maybe operated in any suitable manner. At station A it is shown as mechanically conner'ted with and operated by the operating rod 16 of signal a. At the eXit end of subsection 1 are the lead-Wires 17 and 18, which includebattery 19 and movable contacts 20 and 21.
22 is the armature of magnet coil 12. When magnet-coil 12 is energized, armature '22 is attracted, so as to pick up circuit-controll er 7 and lift it into the field of its magnetcoil 8 and close the circuit through magnet 5. Magnet-coil 8 has a relatively high resistance-say eight ohmsand magnet coil 12 has a relatively low resistancesay one ohm.
In the normal condition of the circuitsthat is, when there is no train in the block signal 4 will be at safety and coil 8 will be included in the circuit of battery 19, so that the battery consumption will be reduced and merely sufiicient to enable coil 8 to hold up the circuit-closer 7, as shown in the drawing. When a train enters subsection 1, itshunts coil 8, thereby opening at '7 the circuit through magnet 5 and causing signal 4 to go to dan er. The circuit-changer is thereupon slnfted. so as to exclude coil 8 from the track-circuit, but indlude coil 12 in the track- Coil 12 of course is not energized until the train has passed beyond the block or track-section guarded by signal 4. When circuit.
'24 is connected full strength of battery 19. to be utilized in closing circuit through magnet 5 at circuitcontroller 7. In the movement of the signal 4 to safety the circuit-changer is shifted to its normal position, so as to include coil 8 in the track-circuit and exclude coil 12. Coil 8 being now energized maintains circuit-controller 7 in its hold-up or closed position and coil 12, being deener ized, drops its armature.
It is preferable t at coil 12 be. excluded from the track-circuit when coil 8 is included therein; but it would not be a departure from the invention to permit coil 12 to remain in the track-circuit with coil 8 when the si nal goes to safety instead of excluding coi 12 at this time.
It will be seen that when coil 12 is initially energized circuit controller 7 is picked up and that when coil 8 is energized circuit-controller 7 is held'up. It will also be seen that the energization of coil 8 initiates the movement of the circuit-changer (contacts 11 and 15) to the osition in which coil 8 is included in the trac +circuit. It will also be seen that the energization'of coil 12 initiates the movement of signal 4 to clear position, the energization of coil8 serving to maintain the signal in clear position. The change in the position of the circuit-changer excludes coil 24 and includes coil 27 therein, this latter circuit extending from wire 22, through Wire 31, contact 30, wire 29, coil 27 to wire 23.
When current again flows through the track-circuit of subsection 2, coil 27 is energized, thereby closing at circuit-controller 34 the local circuit through battery 32 and coil 24. Coil 27 being of loW resistance insures the utilization of am le current to reliably close circuit-control er 34. Current from battery 32 thereupon energizes coil 24, fioW- ing from battery 32 through wire 33, circuitcontroller 34, Wire 35, 0011 24, and wire 31 back to battery. Coil 24 lifts contacts 26 and 30 into their hold-up position and there holds them. This change in the position of contacts 26 and 30 excludes coil 27 and in- It will be seen that the energization of coil 27 initiates the movement of the circuit-changer (contacts 26 and 30) from their pick-up position to their hold-up position, coil 27 working through the agency of the local circuit and coil 24 in eflecting this result. When coil 27 is thus excluded from the track-circuit, it drops contacts 34 and 21, contact i34 breaking the local circuit of battery 32 and contact 21 closing the last break in the track-section of subsection 1. It will be seen that coils 24 and 27 bear the same relation to their trackcircuit as do coils 8 and 12 to their track-circuit and thatthe two relays at stations A and B effect the same ultimate results, although in a different manner and by means somewhat difierent.
At station C the track-relay is shown in a second modified. form. In this case the lowresistance coil 39 is connected on one side to wire 40, leading to one rail of subsection 3, and on its other side through Wire 41, contact 42, wire 43 to Wire 44, leading to the other rail of subsection 3. 45 is the battery of this track-circuit. High-resistance coil 46 IIS is connected on one side to wire 44 and on its other side to wire 41. In this arrangement coils 39 and 46 are wound on the sarnecore. 12. The combination 0 a track-circuit including a source of energy; with a signal;
two magnet-coils; one of high resistance and Zone of low resistance a circuit-controller arranged to be held up by the high-resistance coil; an armature for the low resistance coil arranged to mechanically pick up said circuit-controller; and a circuit-changer operated by'the signal and actin to change the connection of said coils with t he track-circuit from one of high resistance when the signal is in clear position to one of low resistance when the signal is at danger.

The combination of a track-circuit including a source of energy; with a signal; two magnet-coils, one of high resistance and one of low resistance; a circuit+controller arranged to be held up by the high-resistance coil; an armature for the low-resistance coil arranged to mechanically ick up said circuitcontroller; and a circuit-c anger acting to inis in clear position and acting to exclude the high-resistance coil and include the low-resistance coil in the circuit when the signal is at danger.

The combination of a track-circuit 1ncluding. a source of energy; with a. signal; two magnet-coils one ofhlgh resistance and one of low resistance; a circuit-controller arranged to beheld up by the high-resistance coil; an armature for the low-resistance coil arranged to mechanically ick up said circuitccntroller and a circuit-c anger o erated by the signal and acting to include t e high-resistance coil when the s' nal is in clear position and acting to excludet e high-resistance coil and include the low-resistance coil in the circuit when the signal is at danger.
