Specification of Letters Patent.

Applieation'led February l0, 1905. Serial No.` 245,154.
To all whom, t may concern.'
Be it known that we, HERBERT O. SPADE and HENRY E. SPADE, citizens of the United States, and residents of Vicksburg, in the county of Kalamazoo, Stateof Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Feeding or Charge-Delivering Devices, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to improvements in oil-feeding or charge-delivering devices.
Our invention is particularly'adapted as a liquid hydrocarbon feeding or charging device for explosion-engines, although it is very desirable for use as an oil-feed or charge device for lubricators, and is also adapted for use in other relations.
The objects of this invention are, first, to provide an improved feed device ofthe class described adapted to deliver a fixed-amount at each charge; second, to provide an improved feed device of the class described, in which the amount delivered is under perfect control; third, to provide an improved feed device of the class described adapted to accomplish the results specified which is very simple and economical in structure and durable in use.
Further objects and objects relating to structural details will deiinitelyappear from the detailed description to follow.
We accomplish the objects of our invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined, and pointed out in the claims.
A structure embodying the features of our invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specilication, in which- Figure l is a detail longitudinal sectional view of our improved oil-feeding or chargedelivery device, the plunger being shown in full lines with its charge pocket or receptacle in its charging position, the discharging position being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a detail longitudinal sectional view corresponding with that shown in Fig. l with the plunger shown in full lines with its charge pocket or receptacle in its discharged position. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. l looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section-line.
In the drawings similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, a cylinder A is provided. This cylinder is provided with a receiving passage or chamber a, and a discharge or delivery passage or chamber a. The receiving-p assage a of the cylinder is connected by the pipe B to a suitable supply or storage. (Not hereillustrated.) The deliverypassage a is connected to the mixing charner or cylinder of theenginewhen the device is used as a charging device for explosion-engines, orto the part to be lubricated when the device is used as a lubricator, the varts not being here illustrated, by the pipe A plunger C, having a charge pocket or receptacle c, is provided. As the plunger C is reciprocated this pocket or receptacle 'c is brought alternately into the receiving discharge passages a a of the cylinder. The plunger C is provided with a relatively fixed head portion C at its inner end, and with a sleeve C at its outer end. The sleeve C coacts with the head C in forming the annular groove-like charge-pocket c. The head C and the sleeve C are of the same diameter and form, in effect, a plunger with a relatively fixed part and a reciprocating part. The outer or sleeveend of the plunger C projects through the stufling-box A. The outer end of the plunger is threaded to receive the nut D, by which the sleeve C is retained in position and its stroke controlled. This nut D is preferably split and is provided with a setscrew d, by means of which it is clamped in its adjusted position. As the plunger C is reciprocated the sleeve C shifts back and forth, alternately contacting with the head C and with the nut D. When the sleeve is in contact with the nut D, the pocket c is fully open, and when the sleeve is in contact with the head portion C of the plungerthe pocket is closed. (See Figs. l and 2.) With the parts thus arranged by adjusting the nut D the size of the charge-pocket is controlled., thereby regulating the size of the charge.
On the inner end of the cylinder A is a gear-casing E for the driving-gear of the plunger. This driving-gear preferably consists of the driven shaft F, having a disk-like wheel F on its inner end. A pitman-pinf, carried by the wheel, engages the slot c in the head and TOO
of the plunger. By thus arranging the plunger, the charge-pocket thereof is opened in the receiving-passage to receive the charge and closed or collapsed in the discharge-passage, thereby forcing the charge therefrom.
With the parts in the position shown in Fig. l the plunger has completed its outstroke and is on the instroke, the pocket beginning to open as soon as the instroke begins by the drawing away of the head portion C from the sleeve C. The pocket is thus caused to open in the supply-passage, thereby causing a vacuum, which insures its prompt llin Wen the plunger is in the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. l, the pocket opens into the discharge-passage. As soon at the plunger begins its outstroke the pocket begins to close, as the sleeve portion C of the plunger is held by the friction of the stuffingoX A until it is engaged by the head portion C so that the pocket is completely closed, thus completely ejecting the charge therefrom. (See Fig. 2, Where the pocket is illustrated in its closed position.) We thus secure in a simple manner the positive charging and discharging of the plunger at each stroke. rlhe pocket is carried into the charging chamber or passage in its closed position, so that no air is delivered thereto. This is of great advantage, as otherwise it is necessary to provide means for the escape ofthe air, and particularly in the case of feeding heavy liquids or oils the air prevents the ready filling of the pocket, v In this structure the pocket being opened in the charging-passage it creates a vacuum and is readily iilled. The pocket is positively closed in the discharge-passage. The charge is forced therefrom, although the same may be of very heavy or thick material, such as heavy oils. By adjusting the nut D the size of each charge may be regulated as desired.
We have illustrated and described our improved charge-delivery device in the form preferred by us on account of its structural simplicity and economy and convenience in adjustment. We are., however, aware that it may be considerably varied in structural details without departing from our invention.
. Having thus described'our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
