TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

.Be it known that I, ALBER'r W. JOHNS 0N, oi the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in'Holders for Whips, lite. and that the following description,-taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification of the same, wherein'I have set forth the nature and principles of my said improvements, by which myinvention may be distinguished from all others of a similar class, together with such parts as I claim and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent.

The holder, to which this invention relates, is more especially designed for whips, but it may be adapted for many articles, such as billiard-cues, umbrellas, canes, Ste. 1

And this holder consists of self-closingjaws, of suitable shape and size to grasp the whip, &c., for holding which the holder is adapted, in combination with a rest for theend ofthe Whip, 860., which is so connected with the Said jaws, as, when pressure is brought to bear upon it to open the said jaws to receive the whip when releasing the pressure, the jaws will close themselves aboutthe whip, holding it in position. 7

A, in the drawings, represents my'improved holder, to which 13 Bare the'two jaws. These jaws, in the present instance, are made of'a semicircular shape, but they may be made of other and 'various forms. At their ends they pass by each other, and at their other ends, D, are each fixed to sleeves or tubes -E and F,

the one jaw to one sleeve, E, and the other to the other sleeve, F. These tubes or slecvesare connected with each other, and are placed, the one within the other, around a centre-shaft or 'rod, G, the whole being enclosed in a case, H, of suitable form.

. The shaft'G projects and moves through the ends I of the case H, and within'the case, between its two ends, is provided with a pin or stud, J, that projects through slot's K in the two sleeves, E and F, into a slot, L, made in the case H. The slots K of the sleeves E and F extend-in the direction of their length partially around the same, forming spiral slots, passing in opposite directions, so that the said sleeves, when the shaftG is drawri through them,will be turned in opposite directions;

The slot L of the case H is straight, and acts as a guide to the pin. 0, a spiral spring confined in case 15, between its lower head and a collar on centre shaft G. This springis compressed by drawing the shaft G down in the case, and by its reaction raises the shaft to its original position. w

Fixed to the lower end of the shaft G is a conical-shaped cup, M,ektending out in the same verticalplane with the jaws B. p r I Bypressing on the cupM, the shaft Gis pulled-down through the case H, turning by its pin J acting in the spiral slots K of the sleeves or tubes E ahd F, thus opening the jaws B from each other.v

N, car-pieces, fixed to case H. These ear-pieces N are provided for fastening the case in position upon a carriage, if the device is to be used as-a whip holder'or socket. i

To place a whip in the holder, first place it by its end in the socket or cup M, when, forcing down such socket M, the jaws B are opened, allowing the whip to be brought into .thcm, when, releasing the pressure upon the socket M, the jaws, by the action of the spring 0, are then closed about it, holding and securing it inposition.

By my improved holder, a whip can be held most securely and firmly, and by a proper construction of the holding-jawsB, without injuring the finish of the whip in the least, either when inserting or removing it or .while in the holder.

The cup or socket M maybe made of various shapes or styles, and in lieu of a socket a simple plate may be used.

Having thus described my improvements, what I claim as my invention, is V 1. A holder for whips, 860., composed of jaws B, in combination with a rest, M, or their respective equivalents, connected together so as to be operated and to operate substantially in the manner described. v 2. The jaws-B, sleeves E F, centre-shaft G, spring O,'and rest M, when all constructed 'and arranged together for operation substantially as described.
