After a gromet has been fed into position on the anvil and the centeringpin has been elevated to hold said gromet in position the stock, which has been previousl v provided with a hole to receive the gromet, is moved laterally to place said hole in alinement with the shank of said gromet, and a washer is then fed into alinement with the setting device. The setting device'then moves downwardly, forcing the washer down upon the stock, with the shank of the gromet projecting int-o the opening in the washer, and bending the end of said shank over the edge of the opening in the washer, so that the head of the gromet will lie upon one side of the stock and the washer upon the other side of the stock.
The washers are contained in a vhopper comprising a tray 66 and a cover 67, and said hopper is mounted on a shaft 68, that is supported in brackets 69, fastened to the frame ofthe maehinefan oscillating movement being imparted to said hopper by means of a link 70, fastened at one end to the lever 7 and at its other end to an ear on the tray v66, the saine as described with reference to the link 35," which actuatesl the gromet-hopper. top faces can pass under the edge of the cover 67, thereby insuring uniformly-positioned washers in the well 74. As shown in Fig. 8, an inclined face guide-bar 76 extends across -the end of the tray 66 inside of the cover 67, so that any washers which pass down the grooves in an inverted position will be unable to pass under said bar, and consequently will ride up on the inclined face thereof and fall back into the mass of Washers in the hopper, thereby preventing the incorrectly-positioned washers from collecting at the ends of the grooves in the tray. too great a flow of gromets and washers gates 81 are adjustablyfastened to the covers of the hoppers and are adapted to be moved over the ends of the grooves in the trays.
A washer-feed slide 84, which is mounted in a guideway 85 on the head of the machine, forms the bottom of the well 74 and is adapted to receive the lowermost washer in the well and move it into alinement with vthe setting device, the front end of said slide being bifurcated and the upper surface being provided with a recess 86, which receives the lowermost washer in the well when the slide is in its rearward position. The washer-feed slide is moved forwardly by means of an actuator 87, mounted in a guideway 88 on the head of the machine, and which is provided at its front end with a slot 89, which engages a pin 90, that contacts with the feed-slide, said actuator having fastened to one side'of its rear end a roller 91, which is engaged at each upward movement of the rod 23 by an inclined face 92 on a block 93, carried by said rod, the actuator andwasher-feed slide being,
moved rearwardly as soon as said incline face has passed out of engagement with said roller by a contractile spring 94, fastened to a p'in 95 on the actuator and to a pin 96 on the guideway in which thel actuator is mounted. The block 93 is pivotally connected at 97 to a bearing 98 on the rod 23 and is h eld normally in engagement with an adjustable stop 99 on said bearing by a spring 100, so that when the rod 23 is moving downwardly and the curved face 101 on the block 93 comes into engagement with the roller 91, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, said block will swing on its pivot 'until the curved face has passed out of engagement with said roller, the block being returned to engagement with the stop 99 by the spring 100, so that when rod 23 again moves upwardly the inclined face 0n the block 93 will be in position for moving the actuator forwardly. v For insuring that a washer will be removed 6o moves. forwardly I have provided a follower 105, which-isac'tuated intermittently down upon the pile of washers in the well to nest them .closely together most Washer into the recess 86 in the end of from the Well each time the washer-feed slide and force the lower-- the feed-slide, and a retainer 107 for separatingthe lowermost washer in the well from the one above it. The retainer is mounted on the feed-slide and is movable relatively thereto for forcing its end between the lower- 7o niost washer and the one above it and for holding said washer iny the recess in the slide during theforward movement of the slide.
In order that the well may be kept filled with washers, the follower is withdrawn in- 7 5 termittently to permit the washers to pass from the raceway into the well, and to this end the rod 108, to which the follower is fastened, is provided with a block 109, that is engaged by the lever 6 when it is rocked for 8o moving the setting device upwardly. Preferably the follower is forced yieldingly down upon the washers in the well when the lever is rocked in the opposite direction, and in the preferred form of 1n invention, as herein 85 shown, this is accomp ished by a coiled spring 110, which surrounds said rod between a collar 111 thereon and a stationary part of the frame of the machine, as shown in Fig. 2.- The retainer 107 is mounted in a slot in the 9o upper surface of the washer-feed slide and carries the pin 90, which engages the slot in the end of the actuator, said pin projecting downwardly through a slightly-elongated slot 112 in the washer-feed s ide, as shown in 95 Fig. 9, so that when the actuator starts to. move forwardly the retainer will be moved, but the washer-feed slide will not commence to move until the pin comes into engagement with the frontwall of the slot 112, t ierezoo by moving the front end of the retainer between the lowermost washer in the well and the one above it and holding said lowermost washer in the recess in the feed-slide. The recess 86 in the washer-feed slide is deeper at .105 its rear end than at its frontend, as shown in Fig. 12, and the feed-slide is held yieldingl in contact with the lower end of the wal sof the well 74 by' springs 114 and ,115, the spring 114 beimY fastened to the guideway no in which the s 'de `moves and the spring 115 being fastened to the washer-feed slide.
By providing the feed-slidev With'a recess of this character and holding said slide yieldingly inengagement with the Well the edge 115 of the Washer-at the front end ofthe recess will be a proximately flush with the u per surface of) the feed-slide, and the edge o the washer at theA rear end of the recess will be overlapped by the retainer, so that whensaid x zo slide moves forwardly the edge of the washer at the front end of the recess will force its way under the wall of the well, and-A thus insure the removal of but a single Washer at each operation. The retainer r 25 holds the washer in the recess while the feedslide is moving forwardly and also acts'as a sup ort for the Washers in the Well when the fee -slide is in its forward position. That. portion of the gromet raceway 42 which is adjacent tb the gromet-hopper is wide enough'r to hold only one row of correctly-positioned gromets, which rest on their -heads`or flanges, so that a gromet which enters the raceway while it is filled with one Arowof correctly positioned gromets will roll on the edge of its flange down the raceway until its sxliank or barrel comes into conl tact with a :deflector 117,fastened to the raceway, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, said deflector guiding the gromet into a chute 118, fastened to the frame of the machine. The corgate that is moved intermittently to allow a gromet to pass to the end of the raceway. The gate comprises a head 121, provided with a plurality of fingers 122, that extend over the raceway, and said head is fastened to a shaft 123, mounted in a stationary bearing 124 and provided at its rear end with a ratchet-wheel 126, which is rotated intermittently by a pawl on a paWl-carrier 127. When the machine is at rest, the lever 143 and link 142 will occupy the dpositions shown in Figs. 3 and 8, andthe en ofthe agitator willube below the surface of the work-supporting table, the link being held in this osition by means of a spring 147, connecte at one end to a pin on the lmk and' at its other end to a pin on lever 143. A screw 148 in the work-supporting table extends through an elongated slot 149 in the agitator, and when the lever 143 moves downwardly in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 8 said screw will prevent the agitator from moving downwardly, thereby causing the link to be moved into theposition shownin Fig. 9 to straighten the tpglgle formed by said link -and a `tator. en the lever 143 moves upward the toggle being then straightened, the agitator will move into the position shown in dotted lines inFig. 9, thereby striking the washers in the well and causing any that are standing in-an inclined position to assume a horizontal 1 position. When the lower end of the slot 149 comes into contact with the screw 148, further upward movement of the agitator is prevented, thereby breaking the toggle and moving the upper end of the agitator forwardly, the spring 147 yreturnin the link and agitator to normal position wit the stop 150 on the link engaging the notch 145 in the agitator.
The operation of the machine is as follows: The stock into whichl the gromets-are4 to be set is placed on the work=supporting table, andthe operator thendepresfses the treadle 22 to actuate the punch for forming a hole in the stock. The stock is then moved laterallyvtoplace the hole in the stock in alinement with the gromet, which` is held in po- -sition on the anvil by the vcentering-pin,
which is normallyvelevated, and the operator vthen dlepresses both treadles simultaneouslyl to upset the shank of said grometv and also punch a hole for 4the next gromet that is to be attached to the stock. As the` rod 23. moves upwardly the inclined face 50 on block 51 will be moved out of enga-gementwith the IOO roller on the endvof the gromet-feed slide,
and the spring ,5 2 -will move said sliderear'- 1x5 V wardly. Justas the gromet-slide is moved v rearwardly the washer-feed slide is moved forwardly by the engagement of the vinclined` face 92 on block 93 wth=the roller 91 om the feed-slide actuator, and the lowermost washer in the well will be removedl therefrom-and carried into alinement with the downwardly- -moving setting device' 14, which forces the washer down around the Shank of the gromet and bendsV the end'of said shank over the edge of the opening in the washer. Thefollower moves downwardly upon the washers in the well at each operation of lever 6 for moving the setting device downwardly and is moved upwardly to permit washers tol pass from the raceway into the well at each operation of said lever for elevating the setting d'evice. My machine therefore comprises automatic means for supplying the well with washers in combination with means for forcing the washers down into the well. As the setting device comes -into engagement with the centering-pin said pin is moved below the surface of the work-supporting table to. permit the stock to be moved into position to receive the next omet. V/'hen the operator removes his oot from the treadles, the springs return the treadles to normal position, and as the rods 23' and 24 move downwardly the inclined face onblock 51 will move the gromet-fced slide forwardly to carry af gromet in-to alinement with lthe setting device, and the stop 61 on said block will engage the stop 62 and .rock the lever 5S v for elevating the centering-pin and moving the agitator into engagement with' the pile of washers in the well.`
Having described my invention, what I claim a's new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the' United States, is-` 1. In a machine of the class described, a well for holdingfwashers, means for removing a washer from the well, a follower, and means for actuating said follower intermittenti to bear u on washers in the well and force t lem vtowar the point at whichrthey are engage by the washer-removin means.
2. In a machine-of t 1e class described, a
well for holding washers, a device provided with ,a recess for receiving the lowermost washer in the well, a follower, means for a'ctuating said follower intermittingly to bear .upon washers in the well and force said lowermost washery into said recess, and means for actuating said device to remove said lowerirost washer from the well.
3. In a machine of the class described, a well for holding washers, a device mounted below said'well for tain'ermounted on said device and arranged to pass between the lowermostwasher inthe well and the one above it, and means for actuating said device toremove the lowermost washer from the well.
4. Ina machine of the class described, a well for holding a plurality of washers, a device mounted below said well and provided with a recess for receiving-a washer, a retainermoun'ted on said device and arranged to ass between the lowermost washer in the well and the one above it, and means for actuating said device to removezthe lowerlnost washer from the well.
5. In a machine of the class described, a well for holding washers, a device mounted below said well and adapted to receive a washer, a retainer mounted on said device,
and means for moving the retainer relatively to said device to piace the retainer between a washer and those above it in the well and 4bearing yieldm receiving a washer, a rewasher-holdin(r for thereafter actuating said device to remove a washer from the well. l
6. 'Ina machine of the class described, -a well for holding washers, a follower, means foractuating said follower intermittently to -bear upon washers in the well, a device adapted to`receive the lowermost washerin the well, a retainer, and vmeans for actuating said retainer to carry its end between the lowermost washer in the well and the one above it, Iand thereafter actuating said device for removing the lowcrrnost washer from the well.

In a machine of the class described, a well for holding washers, means for removing a washer'from the well, means for supplying washers to said well, a follower, ielding means for moving said follower ownwardly upon the washers in the well to force them toward the point at which they are engaged by said washer-removing means, and mechanism for raising said follower intermittently to permit washers to enter the well.

In a machine of theclass described, a raceway for containing washers, a washerholding well, means for removing a washer from the well, a follower for bearing upon the washers in the well to force them toward said washer-removing means, and mechanism for actuating said follower intermittently to permit washers to pass from the raceway into the well.
11. In a machine of the class described, a well, a device for removin a washer from the well, automatic means forV supplying the well. with washers, and a follower for forcing thev washers down into the well toward the point at which they are en gaged by said removing device.

In a machine of the class described, a setting device, a lever for actuating said setting device, a well for holding washers, means for removing awasher from said well, a follower for bearing upon the washers in said well to force them toward said washer-removfor holding washers, a follower IOO IlO
ing means, and a connection between said follower and lever 'whereby said follower is actuated when the lever is operated.

In ainachine of the class described, a Well for holding washers, a device provided with a Arecess for receiving the lowermost 'washer in the well, means for holding said device yieldingly in engagement with the lower end of said well, and means for actuating said device to remove a washer from the well.

In a machine of the class described, a well forfholding washers, a device mounted below said well, a recess of varying depth formed in said device for receiving the lowermost washer in the well, means for holding said device yieldingly in engagement with the well, a retainer mounted on said device, and means for actuating said retainer to move its end over the recess in said device and thereafter Vactuating said device to remove a washer from the well. i
15. In a machine of the class described, a raceway for containing gromets, a feed-slide, means for reciprocating said slide to remove a gromet from the end vof the raceway, and means for holding said slide down upon the iange of the gromet.
16. In a machine of the class described, a lunger, a setting device yieldingly mounted in said plunger, afeed-slide for moving a washer into alinement with tlic setting device, and means'for actuating said plunger to carry the end of the setting device into the plane of movement of the feed-slide as the washer is moved into alinement with the setting device, substantially as described.

setting device, means for actuating said setting device, hoppers for containing grometsl and washers, 'raceuf'ays into which Athe gromets and washerspass from said hoppers, a well located at the lower end of the washer-raceway for receiving Washers passing from said raceway, means for feeding gromets from the gromet-raceway into alinement with the setting device, means for removing washers from said well and carrying them into alinement with the setting device, and means for forcing'the Awashers in the well toward said washenremovin means.

In a machine of the class escribed, a punch and a setting device, levers for actuat- -ing said punch and setting device, means for operating said levers, hoppers for containing gromets vand washers, means operated 'by said levers for oscillating said hoppers, raceways into which the gromets and washers pass from said hoppers, a well located at the ower end of the washer-raceway for holding washers, a reciprocating slide for feeding gromets from the gromet-raceway into alinement with the setting device, and a reciprocating slide for feeding washers from said well into alinement with said setting device.
19. In a machine of the class described, a

In a machine of the class described, a washer-feeding slide, an actuator connected v to said slide andl provided with a roller, a re'- ciprocating rod, a block pivotally connected tovsaid rod and provided withan inclinedv face that is adapted to engage said roller and move the washerfeeding slide forwardly when' 'the rod Iis moved 1n one direction,l means for moving the washer-feeding slide rearwardly, and an envaging face formed on said block and adapted to contact With said roller, for swinging the block on its pivot when the rod is moved in the other direction.

setting device, a lever for actuating said de-v vice, a plurality of hoppers .for containinor washers and gromets, shafts on which sai hoppers are fulcrumed, raceways formed independent of said hoppers and located adjacent thereto for receiving the washers and gromets, a connection between said gromethopper and the setting-device-actuating lever whereby movement of said lever will oscilraceway having an inclined vertical passage- Way down which the washers roll in a substantially vertical position, and a deliveryraceway having an inclined horizontal passage-Way down which the washers travel in a substantially horizontal position, the lower end of the receiving-raceway being bent at an angle to the main portion thereof and located in alinement with the u er end of the delivery-raceway, substantiallf as and for the purpose described.

In a machine of the class described, a gromet-hopper comprisin a tray provided with a plurality of parall grooves which in Width are substantlally equal 'to the dia'meter ofthe flan e of a gromet, and a cover for said tray whic is provided at its lower edge'l with a plurality of notches in alineme'nt with the grooves in the tray` and which in width are substantially equal to the diameter of the shank of a gromet.

In a machine of the class described, a well for holdin washers and constructedto permit the was ers to pass therefrom, a follower, and means for actuating said follower intermittentlyto bear upon washers in the Well and force them toward the point at which they pass from the well, the well being constructed to admit Washers when the follower is withdrawn. 29. In a machineof the-class described, a
well for holding washers and constructed to permit the washers to pass therefrom, auto- -matic means for supplyin the Well with Washers, and a follower for orcin the washers down into the well toward t e point at -which they pass from the Well.
30. Ina machine of the class described, a setting device, a well for holding washers means for removing a washer from the well and placing it in ahnement with the setting device,' a follower, and means for actuating said follower intermittently to bear upon the Washers in the Well aiid force them toward by said removing means.
