Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented /pril 1'?, 19156.
Application filed March 14,1904. Serial No. 198,02?.v
To (di, ufl/ont if. riz/ay conce-iw;
Be it known that we, THOMAS li. HUGHES, SiDNEr A. Jonsson, and Janns l-l. Samia, citizens of thc United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have inventcd certain now and useful Improvements in -'l`rucl s, of which the following is a specilication. i
ur invention relates to improvements in trucks, its ohject being particularly to .irovide an improved attachment for a stan ard warehouse-truck for extending the length otthe nose. to increase the loading'ca'pacity and in connection therewith improved means for securing thcl attachment against thc face of thel truck whcn not in use.
To thiscnd ourinvcntion consist-sin tho featurcs ol' construction and combination hereinafter particularly dcscribcd and claimed.
.ln the accompanying drawings, forming part ot this specification, Figure l is a side elevation of our improved truck with the attachmcnt turned into position for usc. Fig. 2 is a plan vic-w of the truck with the attachment turned against thc taco thereof, and Fig. 3 is a section of the truck on line :r fr of F ln the drawings, A reprcscnts the trucktramo provided with the ordinary noso 2 and carryii .g-wheels 3.
Uur improved. attachment consists ol a frame B. of shoot-metal bars, having a downturned front end 4r, having hinge support upon a cross-rod :3, which passes through the f siddbars 6 oi the truck. When not in use. the attachment is held against the face of the truclriiy a spring-catch 7, secured under one ol' the cross-ricains 8 and providcd with an upwardly and forwardly bent cnd d. adaptcd to engage with the upper rear odge ot tho attachment. The spring-catch 7 is providcd with a suitable inger-hold l0.
In use the spring-catch is disengaged from the attachment by applying prcssurc to the finger-hold l0, and thon by tiltingr thcI truck forward thc attachment will swing upon its supporting -rod against the nose of thc truck, as shown in Fig. 1. ln this position of tho attaclnnent it acts as an extension of thc noso to allow extra loading and balancing of the truck. ifi/'hen it is not desired to use the attachment, the truck can bc tilted so that the attachment will drop by gravity into the position shown in'Figs. 2 and 3, thc attachment by its weight springing thc catch suliciently to pass underneath the samc. Thus it is not necessary for the operatorio leave the handle end of the truck to manipulate thc extension attachment In order that the attachment may not interfere with -tho ordinary use oi the truck, we construct the same of tour longiturhnal bars, the inner bars forming an intcrmcdiatc spacc to rccoivc thc bulge of barrels, tc.
Having now described our invcniion, what we claim as ucv.'7 and dcsirc to sccnrc by Lettcrs Patent, is-` 1. The combination with a truck provided with an extension attachment consisting of a frame having hinge support at its forward cnd7 of a spring-catch sccurcd to the truck, said spring-catch boing bcnt to engage with the irse end of said attachmcnt and hold theV same against the iacc of the truck.
2. The combination with a truck provided with an cntension attachment consisting of a. tram@ having hinge support at its forward ond, ol' a spring-catch secured to one of the cross-hairs ol" the truck, said spring-catch hav- '8o mg an upwardly and forwardly bent end to cngagc with the free odge of the attachment.
3. The combination with a truck provided with an extension attachment having` hinge, support at its forward end upon said truc ot a spring-catch carried by said truck and provit ed with anupwaidly and forwardly cnt and to lit over the free edge of the attachment, and a finger-hold carried by said spring-catch.
[n tcstimony whereof we allix our signa- -tures in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS H. HUGHES. SIDNEY A. JOHNSON. JAMES il. SAYLE.
