Be it known that ARNOLD STUGIU, a resi and State of Pennsylyariie,'liave invented a new and useful improvement in Side Frames for Railway-Car Trneks; and de hereby de, claire the following-to be a `inll, elettr, and exi My invention relates to veide frames for railway-ear trucks, and has special reference to that class of such i'rsxnies as are made from one pi'eee of cast metal.
The o'bjoet of my invention is to provide Vfor .the taking'eare of the strains npon the spring-plank and truck-freine in going around.. curves, AEC., and, further, to in'iprove the oon-v strction of tin-.se two parts in order vto geta rigid, solid, und more superior Connection be tween the saine, so that the coni'iveing-bolts can be drawn up tightly.
A further object of the invention 'is to provide' a combined brake-hanger,bracket and bolster-stop which is .scoured to the frame in such a Way that all liability of the shearing of the connecting-bolts is obviated and at the saine time the connection between these two parts is made stiffer and more rigid than the ordinary connection now in'use, as well as allowing a wide bolster-bearing surface to be nsedwliich will take np any end Shocks thereon.

SinceV th e improvements made in casting metals this forni of'trnk-frameis formed so 'that there tioned, and this web is. tapered down frein the neck l and overthe journal-box stays at ont losing anything in strength. nother 'attirant-ege ,is the Apossibility of. widening *flange 1b of the freine 1, as at 1d, atwlll near" the center olf the same, where/it is needed t0 resist the strains dueto. the lurching 0f the ew. i on curves. This Piange tapers gradually from the ends 2 to the center, thereby avo1d- Eng awr-1ste ol.' material at the boxes and n wenn {rinne at the qenterns a. result and entennng of a good iastennig for g the i. lien sier brac-liet 6, its the overhang o? . cast integral with the frame; but this is not brake-hanger 6 and bolster-stop is farprefergood practice, as many failures occur'on account ofthe hanger wearing out and breaking and the whole casting having to be scrapped, Besides this the loose bracket is uicker to apply than a whole truck side," an thereby time is saved. Therefore the4 combined able over a solid casting, as it embraces all the wearing-surfaces ei'iisting'on the truckand in renewing such a hangeroc# the side frame should last almost indefinitely, while this han er and stop will facilitate the removal Aof t e truck-bolster without rendering it necessary to drop -the same. Y
The connection betweenthe spring-plank 5 and side frame -is very important, as on strains are produced, which l the frame'out of square, s o in order to'resist these strains avery strong jointside frame casionally is necessary between these parts, and as thesev parts vary in practice it is necessarywto make one yielding, whichis done by splitting the channel-termin g spring-plank 5 near its end, as at 5, in order to form two sections 5 and make a iit between such plank andthe solid side frame 1. Furthermore, in order to get a solid bearing at the extreme points and to avoid a rockin motion, which would occur on'account of t e fins left in the center of the frame-casting, the space for the spring-plank 5 in such frame is cored out to form a receptacle 5", so asto get an absolute solid connection and to be able to draw the bolts 5b, connecting the flanges 5c of the plank 5 with the column-posts 3 up tightly. 0
The s ring-plank 5 'supports a sprlng-plate 7 at eac end and on these plates the trucks ringsS are sup orted in conjunction with tiie bolster A, w ich extends over the said springs.
It will thus be-'seen that my improved truck-trame is composed of comparatively few parts which are connected with cach other 1n amore substantial way than those heretofore in use, while at the same. time such parts which receive the wear are made renewable. It will also be seen that there are two kinds of strains to be taken care ofi. c., lateral and longitudinal-and as the former strains' or shocks are not so grr-.at as the latter'by reason of their appearing very gradually as the Vcarapproachcs a curve it will be evident that they will be merely horizontal forces, which will tend to bend the i Brake-hanger brackets have been A 817,405 BESTAVAILABLEcon truck side frame, but with comparatively little tendencyto batter theVWearing-surfaces against which the bolster bears. As the shocks in the longitudinal direction are more severe and occur every time thecar starts, the bolster is thrown against the vertical'members of the truck-frame with great force and with a tendency to batter the' same. Such a subjection in connection with a const ant upanddown movement of the bolster l soon wear' out the bearing-surfaces in taking such longitudinal or end shocks, and for,4 this reason these bearing-surfaces are madewide and renewable, as hereinbefore mentioned. i
