THlLL-CQUPLIING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 3, 1906.
Application filed April 12,1905. Serial No. 255,259.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CrmnLns F. BLAIN and GEORGE S. JACKSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Webb City, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Thill-Coupling, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to thill and tongue couplings, and has for its object to produce a simply-constructed and inexpensive device of this character whereby the thills or tongues may be quickly attached or detached or transferred without the necessity of the removal of the nuts or like parts.
With these and other objects in view, which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in certain novel features of construction, as here inaftermore fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, is illustrated the preferred form of the embodiment of the invention, capable of carrying the same into practical operation, it being understood the invention is not necessarily limited thereto, as various changes in the shape, proportions, and general assemblage of the parts may be resorted to without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advan tages.
In the drawings thus employed, Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Fig. 3is a transverse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the locking-bolt detached.
The improved device com rises a bolt member (represented as a who e at 10) formed substantially in U shape, with one leg 11 for passage through the apertures in the cars 12 13 of the clip 14 and the alined aperture in the knuckle member 1.5 of the thill or tongue 16, as the case may be, and the other leg 17 for passage over the tops of the ears rearwardly of the knuckle member and with its terminal 18 bent laterally and curved in- Wardly slightly to cause it to press with considerable force against the adjacent side of the clip or the ear 13 when forced into position. By this simple means a very effective and secure locking means is produced between the knuckle member and the clip memher, which will be held with suflicient force by the resistance imparted by the lateral end 18 to effectually prevent its release under the jars and concussions to which it may be subjected when in use, while at the same time easily releasable when required.
An antirattler-spring 19 will preferably be inserted between the knuckle member and the rearward arm 17 of the locking-bolt, the spring being substantially in shape, with outwardly curving terminals for bearing, respectively, against the members 12 and 17 and partially overhanging the same to prevent accidental displacement.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim is The combination with the clip having the spaced apertured cars and the knuckle member for position between said ears and having an aperture for alinement with the aperture in. the same, of a coupling member substantially U shape with one of its legs for passage through said alined apertures and the other of its legs for passage transversely above said ears in the rear of said knuckle member and with its free end bent laterally and inwardly for yieldable engagement with the adjacent surface of the clip, and a spring substantially in shape with outwardly-curving terminals for bearing respectively against said knuckle member and said rearward coupling-leg member and overhanging the same.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own We have hereto affixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES F. BLAIN. GEORGE S. JACKSON.
