H. M. JACKSON. ROOFING.

ROOFING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 3, 1906.
Application filed November 3, 1904. SBIlBl N0 231,316-
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY M. J AOKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Fairfield and State of Ohio, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Roofing, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in means for securing slates on roofs and protecting the edges of the courses laid thereon.
In laying slate in single lap in the usual way the first and last rows of nails are eX- posed and small spaces between the slats and the roof are left open along the side edges of the roof. By my invention I provide a securing and protecting device which not onl adds to the security and efliciency of the roo covering, but also to its ornamental appearance.
The construction and combination of parts embodying my invention are as hereinafter described and claimed, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view, part being broken away, of a roof to which slates are applied and secured and protected by my improved device. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of said device, the same being shown partly bent or folded. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portiondof a roof with my improved device applie In Figs. 1 and 3, A indicates slate laid on a roof in single lap, and B my improved securer and protector. On the right-hand side of Fig. 1 the securer and protector B is shown applied as in use, and on the left-hand side and in Fig. 3 I illustrate more plainly the mode of application of the same. The securer and protector is formed of an elongated sheet-metal strip or plate which is practically rectangular, although one corner is preferably rounded, as shown. The plate is bent or folded lengthwise of its middle, so that when applied it embraces the edges of shingles, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. One half of the plate is left entire and the other half is slit crosswise, so as to form three tongues 1 2 3, Fig. 2. The outer tongues 2 and 3 are bent inward and lie parallel to the upper half of the device, and the middle tongue 1 is bent downward and stands at a right angle to the tongues 2 and 3. Thus the latter project and lie under the shingles, while tongue 1 lies against a rafter or other side portion of a roof and is secured b a nail, as shown in Fig. 3. It will be seen t at when the device is thus applied it overlaps and protects the edges of the slates and also forms an ornamental attachment which enhances the appearance of the roof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a roof-sheathing and shingles laid in rows thereon, of the im proved securing and protecting device, consisting of a metal strip having at one edge an integral tongue which is bent downward and secured in a vertical plane to the side edge of the roof, and the remaining free portion of the base of said strip projecting beneath the shingles, and the top portion of the strip being bent over the shingles, thus inclosing the side edges of the same, substantially as described.
HENRY M. JACKSON.
