Description

`@ni-tris ftstrs; gl-'strut @Him ABRAHAM-KIP?, JR., OFSINGSING, NEW YORK.
Y Lettcrslatent No. 81,649, dated 'September 1, 1868.
i iureovrusnr 1N STEAM- AND rmB-Rseomrons. t
`To ALL WHoM IrMAY'coNonRN; v t
Be it known' that I, jAnRAtIAMKIPLJr., of Sing Sing, in the county of Westchester, and State of New York, .have invented a new and Y improved lStcam-Pressure and Fire-Regulator; and Idov hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, andcxact description thereof, whic h will enable others skilled in the artto make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawing, forminga part of this specification.
This invention relates tov-a newand improved apparatus or device for regulating the pressure of steam in boilersbyautomatically controlling theiiresvthereof and it. consists in devices connected with a damper, and communicating with the steamboiler,l as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby an excess of steampressure inthe boiler is reduced,`by the action of the steam from the boiler upon the mechanism employed, 'in such a`manner as-to partially close the damper, and, check the draught of the re, and when the pressure is below the standard required, the mechanism made toopen the damper, and thereby increase the draught of the tire.
The accompanying' drawing 'represents a side sectional view of my invention.
A represents a chambeigjwhich communicates with a steam-boiler by means of a pipe, B, andV C C are two compartments in said chamber, each of which is provided at one side with an elastic disk, D, both of which are attached to a sliding arm, E, as shown at a a. .A i I F is an ordinary slide-valve, the exhaust-port, b,.of which, is show n by dotted 1inesand c are the ports which lead respectively to the compartments C C.
This valve F works in a suitable box, G, which istted in a'dome, H, in the chamber A, with which dome the steam-pipe B communicates. i
The box Gis provided with suitable apertures, through which steam is admitted into the ports c c in box G, us the movement of the valve F will admit.`
l This arrangement of thevalve'F and itscportspcic is precisely the same as the' ordinary slide-valve of a reciprocating steam-engine, and the dome H corresponds to4 an ordinaryrsteam-chest. These parts and their operation aresov well knowntoevery engineer that a prolix description .of them is notvdeemed necessary. v
The-valve -Fis 4provided with'a stem, I, which is ttedinto'aboX, J, the latter communicating at its upper end with the dome H, when the valve F is not down upon it.
The lower end of ,the valve is connected to an elastic disk, K, which has a pendant, L, extending down. below the cham'ber A, and bearing upon ofne end of a beam, M, which has knife-edges a zu, resting in V-shaped bearings,'a`nd on which beam an adjustable ball or weight, N, is placed.y This beam and weight correspond to un ordinary scale-beam andWeight. i i i -Gis a bent or right-angular lever, having its fulcrum at d, and its lower and shorter arm, e, extending; within a recess, f, in the beam M. i
The upper and longer arm g o t' this lever is rconnected tothe tire-damper in unysutable way.
The operation is as follows: l l I The steam from the boiler passes i'nto dome H, and thence into box J, and acts upon the elastic disk K, with a pressure due to that in the boiler, the pressure upon K being transmitted to the inner end of thebeam M, which pressure may be esstedin a greater or less degree by the position of the weight Non'M.
Suppose, for instance, that a pressure of twenty pounds to the inch be required in the boiler, the weight N may be so adjusted cr placed on the, beamthat the inner end of' the latter cannot belforced down until the "pressureon K exceeds that, and when this excess of pressure occurs, the forcingdown'of the inner end of the beam M moves the -valve F, so that steam will he admitted intothe compartment C', and the steam in C allowed to yexhaust through the port b,'and the elastic disk D of Cwill be pressed outward, and the disk D of C drawn -inward, the arrn Evbeing thereby'moved in the direction' of arrow 1, and thearmg of ,lever O moved in the direction of arrow 2, and the tire-damper turned so a's to4 check the draught of `the vtire, the cooling down of which reducesthe steam-pressure in boiler.
When the steam-pressure in boiler gets below the required standard of twenty pounds to the inch, the weight on beam M will raise the disk K and valve F, so that the part c will be brought in communication with the exhaust-port b, while steam will be admitted into vthe port c of the compartment C, and steam exhausted from C', the result of which is the movement of slide F in the direction indicated byarrow 3, and the movenent of the army of lever O in the direction indicated by arrow 4, and the adjustment `of the tire-damper, so as to increase the draught of the ire, and the pressure of steam in the boiler.
' The beam M may be provided'with set-screws, (shown in red,) so as to limit the sweep of vthe lever O, and thereby 'control the extent of the movement of the damper, es circumstances may require. l
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The slide-valveF, in connection with the elastic disks D D K, compartments C C in chamber A, arm E,
and beam M, andthe lever 0, or its equivalent, all arranged to operate in connection with a. fire-damper, substantially in the manner as and for the purpose set-forth. 5
The above specification of'my invention signed by me, this 26th day of May, 1868.
