Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mal-ch 27, 1906.
Application filed March 7, 1905. Serial No. 248,391.
'0 mil whom it may concern:
it known that i, Jenn J. DELEHANT, a l l the United States, and a resident of the county of Cool; and State of e invented new and improved learner and Die-Stock, of which full, clear, and exact deto mechanism for ng pipes, and more parto reanicr to be connected with a such manner as to accomplish uding and the reaming at a single operat on. A y ordinary dio-stock may be employed in this relation.
Ii; invention further relates to certain admes :nism and other constructional itus of the character stated, low, and pointed out in the s be had to the accompany- I r.- nung a part cl this specifi- )ll, in u like i lch similar characters of referno in (has e cmrespondlng parts in both the is a fragmentary longitudinal secion through :1. die stock made in accordance with invention, and Fig. 2 is a hori- Zolltui soc line 2 the arrow.
dy portion of a die-stockis shown at 3 and is provided with sleeves 4 5 integral Tl: o-owi ch, these sleeves being fitted with hanll 7 provided with conical ends 8'9, prefthreaded and of such conformity as to *.t "'i.i1tO said sleeves. The body portion ier provided with a chamber 10 and uh anannular clznnping portion 11, concentric thereto. Extending downwardly from the body portion 3 and forming a continuation thereof is a barrel 12, provided with a number of radially-disposcd slots 13, each of which accommodates an adjustable jaw 14. .linch jaw is provided with a dog integral ihormvitlyauul is also provided. with abovelcd portion 16. The interior f the barrel pmvidod witha thread 17, upon which is revm bly fitted a (roller 18, provided with a H). When the collar 18 is ion through the same upon the 1 looking in the direction of .ul'ml wortion turned, it causes the dogs ii to approach or rel-ode from cur-l: other us the case may be,
ted upon. the threaded barrel 12. A plate 21 is detachahly connected by bolts 22 with the body portion 3 of the die-stock. This plate 21 1s provided-with a cylindrical portion 23 integral therewith and extending upwardly therefrom, this portion being provided externally with a thread 24. A cap 25, threaded internally, as shown in Fig. i, fits upon the cylindrical portion 23 and may be adjusted upward or downward relatively thereto by turning. A bolt 26 is provided with an an gular head 7 and is loosely fitted with a washer 28. This bolt is encircled by a spiral spring The lower end of the bolt 26 is provided with a thread 29. A manner is threaded internally and fitted upon the threaded end 29 of the bolt 26. The reamer 30 is provided at its lower end with cuttingsurfaces 31 and is further provided with ain 32, which projects in lateral direction lrom the axis of the reamer, as indicated in Fig. 1. The cylindrical portion 23is strengthened by means of braces 33 integral therewith and with the plate 21 and is further provided with a slot 34, into which thepin 32 projects, as shown. By rotating the head 27 the reamer 30 is raised or lowered, (according to the view shown in Fig. 1,) so that the pin 32 travels upward or downward within the slot 34; This action increases or decreases the tension of the spring 26. The reamer 30 may therefore Within certain limits be moved to any desired distance from the top of the barrel.
The plate 21 is provided with an annular clamping-plate 35, which mates the annular clamping portion 11, as will be understood from Fig. 1. Disposed intern'iediate of the annular clamping portions 11 and 35 is the thread-cuttin die mmcber 86, which is provided with the usual interrupted cutting edges 37.
As aboveindicated, my invention is used for cutting threads upon pipes and reaming these pipes during a single operation. The pi )e is secured in a vise or otherwise held rigidly in position, and the barrel 12 is slipped over its end. By adjusting the member 18 the jaws 1.4 are-drawn inwardly, so as to cen terthe pipe. into such position that the spring 26 has a proper degree oi tension. The die-stock now being turned, the interrupted surfaces 37 cut threads upon its exterior, while the reamer forces its way slightly into the pipe. The travel of the die-stock incidental to the cutihe bolt-head 27 is nextturned ting of the threads advances the rennier at a proper rate to ream the pipe. By turning the cap 25 such adjustment may be made that the some reamer can out pipes of dillerent diameters. For instance, a No, l renmer wil-l ream from one-hall iueh toone ineh pi e, while a No. 2 remner will ream from one inch to two inrh pipe. hen the operation is completed, the die-stool; is turned in the opposite direction, and. thus removed from the pipe. lhe spring '26" is oi considerable thickness, so as to exert a suitable tension upon the remner, and thus force the some properly against the pipe.
Having thus described my invention, 1
elnim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent--- 1. The ()Onllllllzitlfifl of :1 d1e-stoelr p1o vided with a barrel, said barrel having at slot,
:1 resmer mounted eentrall within said barrel and provided with a pin proji ting into said slot, a threaded bolt ei'igztg ing said reamer tor the purpose oi grzidnzilly shifting the position thereof relatively to said barrel, and spring mechanism for tensioning said retunerv 2. The combination ot a die-stool; pr'ovided with s barrel, :1 cap mounted upon stud barrel and movable relatively thereto, 2i bolt connected with said esp, 2t spring encircling means for adjusting said reamer, and a threadcutting die engaged by said clamping members and also adapted to engage said pipe.
in testimon whereof I have signed my name to this speeilir-ation in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
