' BED ATTACHMENT.
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, NAN ELMA SMITH, a United States, residing at Dowell, in the county of Fisher and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in the following is a specification.
My invention is an invalid-bed, and more particularly ed-pan.
The object ofthe invention is to provide an article of this kind which is thoroughly sanitary and which can be comfort and fatigue to the patient.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a bed provided with my atsimilar view showing it open. Fig. 3 is a the water is turned on.
' owl-shaped vessel vessel tangentiall sectional'view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. 4 is a sectional View on the line 4 4 of Fig. 5 is an elevation of a modification.
Referring specifically to the drawings, A denotes the side rails of an ordinary bed, B the slats, and C the mattress. formed with a, suitable opening 0 to receive the parts to be described.
indicates a vessel which is located within the opening 0 and has on the outside a flange d, engagin the slats B, whereby it is suported. Tie bed-pan proper comprises a E, which is arranged inside the vessel D and has leg e extending through the bottom thereof and communi- Fig. Fig. 2.
cating with a sewer-pipe F, having a checkvalve G to prevent backfiow of the discharge. The wall of the vessel E is perforated, as at H, for the. purpose of deodorization, the deodorizing agentbeing placed inside the vessel D. For flushing the vessel E a watersupply pipe I is provided which enters the the mouth of the pipe being upwardly presented, so that 'all parts of the vessel will be thoroughly washed when The top edges of the vessels D and E are covered by a rubber pad K, which has at its outer edge loops is, whereby it is sewed to the mattress. A id. L, covering both vessels, is also provided, said lid being hinged, as at M,
to the vessel-D. Means for raising and lowering the lid comprise a rock-shaft N, connected therewith and journaled at its outer end by being extended through-the side rail Specificationof Letters Patent. Application filed duly 18, 1905. Serial No. 270,175.
Bed Attachments, of which an attachment in the nature of a used without disclosed. it closed, and Fig. 2 is a The latter is Patented. Mar-ch20, 1906.
The lever n for operating the rock-shaft extends along the outside of the side rail and is of such length as to be within easy reach of pieces, plvraise the lid the patient. The lever is in two otally connected" at 0, so that to all the patient needs to do is to push forward on the lever, and this can be done without rising.
The lid is in, two sections, which are connected by a hinge P to enable it to be more readily slip ed from under the patient, the outer and sliorter section Q dropping down- .wardly, as. shown in Fig. 4, when the lid is raised. The
top of the lid is suitably padded and extends flush with the mattress when Rindicates arubber-shield, which is secured at one end to' the top of the vessel E on the inside thereof, the outer end being connected by a tape or other suitable means to the lid. When the lid is raised, the shield is elevated, and being in the shape of a hood it extends around the mouth of the vessel E and forms a shield which effectively protects the mattress and bedclothes from being soiled when the bed-pan is in use. Whenthe lid is closed, the shieldhangs down into the vessel E.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 5 the lower end of the vessel E is fitted with a re-,. movable receptacle S by a bayonet or other suitable formof joint. This receptacle will be used -where no connections can be made with a sewer-pipe.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a mattress having an opening therein; of a vessel in said opening having a perforated wall; a deodorizer-holder surrounding said perforated wall; and a lid for the aforesaid vessel.
2. The combination with a mattress having'an opening therein; of a vessel in said opening and a lid hinged to the vessel, said lid Icomprising sections which are hinged toget er. I
i In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of. two subscribing witnesses.
