l ijn some cases dispense with the alarm apparatus and depend solely upon the indicating apparatus as a sullicient protection in some cases.
l may also combine with both or either of the ahorre-described devices a recording aoparatus, which l will now proceed to escribe? l Gn the shalt 2 l may arrange a suitable sprocket-wheel and connect it by a s :rochetchain 32 with a corresponding Wheel on a shaft 3.3, mounted underneath the seat of the vehicle, as indicated. in lTip-s. 1 and 2. The shaft may be connected hy suitable gearing (illustrated at Se) with shaft 35,carryl 3G and riso carrying at its remote nien ffl?, which engages -wheel 32% on a shaft 3Q. i art also carries a spool 40, as .thor-fn. lho arrangement of the spools 36 and Ll() is the usual one whereby' a sheet ot paper or other material suitaily marked with indicating-lines is reclcd oil' from one spool and wound upon the other. ln the present instance thc spool Ll() is iirst loaded. Vwith the roll oli paper or other material, and the action to wind this paper or other material on the spool fifi and reel it oil from the spool. fil). lt is evident that such action will taire place through thc action ol" the driving-shaft in connection with thc gearing' already descrilxidA ln asmuch as the spools should be wound very slowly, the gearing,u between the driving-shaft and the spools should `gradually reduce the speed when transmitted to the shaft 35.
On the hub of the governor 7 l mount a lever 41, which is pivoted at 42, said lever having engagement with the hub by means of a pin 44 on one end of" said lever which en tors an annular groove 45 in the said hub, the arrangement being such that in the rotation of .the huh and the vertical movements thereof on the driving-shaft 2 the pin will always remain in the groove and a positive and effective connection between thc parts is always maintained. VAs the governor changes its position under the influence of the rotation of the shalt 2 the outer end of the lever 41, which carries pencil 43, will be carried along the surface of the paper on the spool 40, thereby tracing a line upon the paper. The location of the pencil-line u on the paper will indicate at what speed tlie vehicle was traveling at the time the line was made. Rcierring to the drawings, if we assume that the line marked 4l represents the extreme distance to which the pencil-point should be allowed to travel in order not to exceed thc predetermined speed, then' it is evident that the throw ol' the lever 41 should not be carried beyond this point. Should it appear upon removing the record that a pencil-line was found farther along` than the line 44 it would indicate that the speed of the vehicle had been excessive during a certain portion of its run. Such record might he appealed to as conclusive evidence of thel maximum speed during a given run of the vehicle.
In another application filed by me August 2 5, 1903, Serial No. 170,681, of which this vcase is a division, claims are made upon the indicating and alarm apparatus described herein.
l claim as my invention-- in a speed-recording device, the combination of a driving-shaft, a collar fixed thereon, a second collar slidably mounted on the shaft, arms pivotally connec ed to the slidable collar and each carrying:r a governor-ball at its troc end, links connecting the lixed collar and said arms, a collar adjustably mounted on said shaft between the fixed and movable collars, a set-screw to maintain thc adjust- `able collar in position, an expansivo .spring on the driving-shaft, and abutting the movable and adjustable collars, a sleeve slidably mounted on the shaft and engagedl by said first-mentioned slidablo sleeve, and having an annular groove, intcrgoared l'ccd and take-up rolls carryingr a record-sheet, a counter-sha t parallel to tnc driving-shalt und geared to ono of sind rolls, cham-gearing for transmitting mot-ion from the driving-shaft to thc KOC oounter-shaft, a lever lfulerumed et e point Signed at New York,` in theeountyof New intermediate its ends, seid fulcrum being be- York andfState of New York, this 19th dayl tween the drivin ftshaft and said rol-ls, one of November, A.
