Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Maren 1.3, 1906.`
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, LEON GsOHWIND, acitizen of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grates, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to improvements inv every particular.
Tovattain the desiredobject, my invention consists of a combined rotary and dumping grate embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts for service "sublstantially asv disclosed herein.
' Figure 1 represents atop plan viewof my grate, with the parts of the grate in locked or closed position, as when the grate is in use. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the grate in open or dum ingposition, and Fig. 3 rlepresents a sectional) view on the line 3 3 of In the drawings theletter-A designates the main portion of the grate, which is substantially in the form Of a ring or circle and provided with the openings B for the passage of the ashes, and upon its periphery is formed with the socket or recess C, and upon its inner side opposite said recess is formed with the inward-extending grate portion D, having the lateral lugs or studs E, which form bearin s for the ears F, formed on the straight edge of the inner substantially circular hinged grate-section H. n
From this construction it will be observed that my grate consists of the outer or ring ing the handle or grasping portion M, and the intermediate fastening or securing tongue N, which in normal position engages the seator recess C and serves to hold the hinged and outer sections in place in order that the operation of shaking can be properly performed, and when desired to dump the grate it is simply necessary to pull the lever outward, which releases the tongue and the hinged section falls, dumping the grate of its entire contents. After the grate has been dumped it is simply necessary to raise the lever and slide it inward to bring the parts'into closed or locked position. Thus the grate by means of 4the single lever can be cleared by shaking or can be'entirely rid of cinders and ashes by simply dumpingthe hinged section and the parts instantly returned to Operative position.
It will be observed that my grate comprises only three parts, thus insuring simplicity, durability, and inexpensiveness of construction also, that it ycan be operated with ease and will be thoroughly efficient, v
and that it can be assembled or taken apart by an unskilled person, and that it is practical in every respect.
inner dumping member or section and means for connecting said members and for shaking both of said members and dumping the 'inner dumping member, said means consisting of a v lever-having an inner slotted end, slidingly mounted on the dumping member and adapted to engage the outer or normally horizontal member to lock the dumping-section in its horizontal position.
2. A grate composed of an outer'ring-section, a hinged or dumping inner section and means for locking the sections together and for kdumping said inner section or member,
said means consisting of a lever having an inner slotted end, slidingly mounted on the dumping inner section and adapted to engage the outer or normally horizontal member to lock the dumping-section in its horizontal position.
3. A grate composed of a. ring-section, a and for eoinieeting and rotating the sections 1o circular dumping-section hinged Within said and dumping the hinged section. ring-section, and a slidinglever forlocking the In testimony whereof I a'liix my signature inner dumping-section and the ring-section toin presence of tWo witnesses. gether and for shaking said sections. LEON GSCHWIND 4. A grate composed of an outer section, a hinged inner section and a lever having a Witnesses: movable sliding connection with the hinged W. J. SHAW, inner section for locking the sections together CHAs. F. OHL
