Be it known that I, CHARLEs- SCHEER, a citizen of the United States of Americare siding at Silverton, inv the, county of San Juan and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Boiler-Flue Cleaners, of which the following is a specification. f f

` This invention relates to certain. new and useful improvements in boiler-flue cleaners, the object of the invention being to provide a simple, convenient, and comparatively inexpensive device by which soot andother substances deposited within boiler-flues may be readily detached therefrom and withdrawn, and, further, to provide a cleanin device which is a plicable to various sizes'o flues.

The pre erred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the improved cleaner inserted within a flue, the latter appearing in section and a portion of the cleaner being broken away to expose the ex ansion means.

Fig. 3 is a detail side elevational view of a portion of the cleaner-stem, showing the adjustable cuttingknives; and Fig. 4 is a cross-section taken on the line b b of Fig. 3.

K Referrin now more particularly to the drawings, t e numeral 1 represents a tubular stem or shank having a screw-threadedrear end 2, adapted to receive a suitable handle or operating device. stem is provided j with a spiral or augershaped scraper-blade 3 and is formed at opposite sides with longitudinal slots 4, thus adapting the said forward end of the stem to be expanded and contracted to adapt the blade 3 to be adjusted to operate upon the inner surfaces of lues of different sizes or diameters. In order to expand the stem, the

forward or split .end thereof is internally threaded to receive a screw-threaded expansion-plug 5, having an outer rectangular operating-head 6, by which it may be conveniently adjusted through the medium of a wrench or other suitable tool to expand the slotted portionof the stem and permit the same to contract by, its natural contractile energy.:V

permit them to be adjusted to engage the surfaces of flues of different diameters.

In operation the cleaner is inserted into.

the flue and given a reciprocatory and rotary motion, whereby the deposits will be removed from the wall of theflue by the action of the scraper and cleaning-knives, the screw further serving to feed the removed particles rearwardly in order that their convenient removal may be effected. Through the expansibility of the forward portion of the stem and the adjustability of the cleaning-knives the spiral scraper and knives may be adjusted to operate upon flues of different diame- .ters and to thoroughly remove the accumulated deposits therefrom. l

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. A Hue-cleaner provided with anexpansible forward end, adjustable scraping-knives in rear thereof, a spiral scraper carried by the expansible end,and means for expanding the said expansible end to vary .the diameter of the spiral scraper. 2. A uescra er comprising a tubular stem havingia split expansible forward end and formed in rear thereof with radial slots, a spiral scra er surrounding said expansible end and sp it to expand therewith, means for expanding the said expansible end of the stem and spiral scraper, scraper blades mounted in said radial slots, and means for supporting and adjusting said blades.
