Cam-slots 37 are so shaped and disposed in their respective brackets 35 that when by the hereinafter-described means arms 27, Fig. 2, are moved inwardly toward roll 11 the blank engaging noses, as 40, Fig. l of side clips 29 are caused to move toward,over, and then down onto the face of said roll 11 or onto any bagblank suitably dis osed on the face of said roll. Also when evers 27 are allowed to swing outwardly away from roll 11 urged by their respective springs 31 said noses 40 of side clips 29 will be moved u wardlcy and backwardly from the face of roll 11 an then downwardly-below the level of the face thereof.
For clam ing the lower ply of the mouth of the bag; )lank to lower roll 11 the usual front clip, as 51, is rovided. Said clip is secured to pivot-shaft 52, with which it is escillated in proper time to grip the bag-blank to the roll, by means of arm 53 on said shaft,
- and which arm carries roll 54 thereon for engagement with still cam 55 in reaching from upright 8. Said front clip 51 may be lifted' from engagement with the bag-blank or rollface by means of spring 56, coiled about the outboard portion of shaft 52, one end of the spring being secured to roll 11 and the other end to arm 53.
In lieu of. a front clip similar to front clip 51 of roll 11 roll 10 is provided with one or more needles, as 57, projecting from its face, and which are ada ted to penetrate both the upper and lower plies of the bag-blank as that part of said roll bearing the needle or needles rolls into contact with the blank. As the for: ward endof the blank passes out from the bite of rolls 1() 11 front 011 51 in roll 1 strips off the lower ply of the bfank from sa' needles, which needles retain their hold on the upper pl of the blank and lead it upwardly around rol l0, Fi 5. Roll 11 may be rovided with suitab e cavities, as 58, into w ieh said needles 57 may pass uninjured as the rolls roll to ether. A suitable plow, as 59, Fig. 2, depending from cross-bar 60, is provided to strip the upper ply of the bag-blank from the needles at the pro er time. Said plow is preferably provide with horns 61, projectmg into grooves 62 in roll 10, whereb said horns are insured access under the a vaneing edge of the upper ply of the blank.
An alternate construction of the side-clip mechanism is shown, Figs. 3 and 4. The section of the major part of Fig. 3 is taken on line L? d of Fig. 4; but the section through the bearings of that figur is taken on line 0 c of said Fig. 4. The section of Fig. 4 is taken on line b b of Fig. 3, and a portion of the u per part of roll 10 is broken away to better s ow cams 440 and 68. InFigs. 3 and 4 each pair of side-clip levers, as 270 270, are pivotally mounted in opposite ends of a bar, as 63, which bar is mounted for approximately radial reciprocation in a slot, as 70, in one side of roll 1100. By these means side clips 290 290, fast to the free ends of levers 270 270, a
respectively, may be moved from below the level of the face of said roll to a position slightly above said face and then after being thrust inwardly over said roll-face may be lowered toward said face to grip the lower plies of a bag-blank thereon. The means provided to accomplish these movements are as follows: Pro ecting inwardly from side frames 6 7 are cams, as 64, for engaging horns 65, projecting from the ends, respectively, of bar 63. As said horns ride up the inclines at the forward ends, respectively, of ca ms 64 64 bar 63 will be moved inward] toward the center of roll 1100, and side .ci s 290 will thus be raised above the level 0 the face of said roll.
On outwardly-projecting arms 67 67 on levers 270 270, respectively, are mounted for rotation cam-rolls, as 47. Said rolls engage cams 430 430, extending inwardly from uprights 6 7, res ectively, and by which earns said rolls, and therefore side clips 290 290, are thrust inwardly just after said clips have been raised above the level of the face of roll 1100. Immediately thereafter horns 65 65 pass into depressions, as '69, in cams 64 64, whereby side clips 290 290 are lowered toward the face of said roll. In practice said successive upward, inward, and downward movements of the side clips may overla more or less, whereby more time may be a forded each movement. Horns 65 65 and rolls 47 47 ma be urged toward their res ective cams an levers 270 270 urged to their amped outerpositions, respectively, by means of springs, as' 71', whie 1 act a ain'st pro'eeting ears, as 72, provided there or on sai arms. Said springs are coiled around steady-posts, as 73, projecting from the ends of the roll, and the other ends of said springs thrust against posts, as 74, also projecting from the ends, respectively, of said roll. ,Guides, as 49, are provided on roll 1100 to assist levers 270 270 to travel in one plane as to said roll. Upper roll 1000 is provided with side clips, as 280, mounted and actuated in all ways similar to the side clips of roll 1100, except that cams 68 are shorter than earns 64, so as to cause thesido eli s of upper roll 1000 to open before the side 0 ips of lower roll 1100.
Ironing-roll 12 is provided with a supplemental front linger 75, pivoted at 77 at or near the periphery of said roll and arranged and ads ted to swing outwardly from said roll and impinge against that part of the for: ward end of the lower ply of the hag-blank on roll 11 where the paper is to be turned over for forming the forward end of the diamond fold. in the present instance the bagblank is shown as having slits in the forward end thereof whereby thodiamond fold is commenced a short distance back from the front edge of the blank, Fig. 5. lloll 12 may if desired, be considered simply as a carrier for the supplemental front finger, as the ironing that isfdone by said roll could he done by other means. Finger 75 is provided with a T head 76, whose width corresponds with the width of front flap 78 of the bag blank or with the desired width of separation of the turnod over portions of the forward end of the diamond fold. Finger 75 is moved outwar-div for engagement with roll 11 or with a bag-blhnk thereon -by,means of spring 79, coiled about the pro'ecting end of pivot-shaft 77. One end of sair spring is secured to roll i2 and the other end to collar 80, fast on the outer end of said shaft. The location of these clips in relation to their respective'folding-hcds is such that each oppositely disposcd pair may heactuatcd to grip a hag-blank suitably disposed on their res octave folding-bed directly in advance of tlie place where the rear flap folding crease is No such clips or, as for that matter, any clips are necessary on roll 13 for the practice of my invention, and the present clips are herein supplied as adjuncts to the later operations of folding the rear and. front flaps, but which foldings are no part of my present improvements, and therefore no means are provided therefor.
Folding bed is provided with two grooves Q7 98, and folding-bed {)6 .is provided with two grooves 99 100 for eoaction with creasonblades m1 102, respectively, of poster and crease! segment 14. Roll 13 is also provided with grooves 103 NM similar to groove .86 in roll 11 to allow the passage of shaft 7'7 in roll 12.
Between roll 12 and segment 14 is provided another deflector 94 similar and similarl mounted to deflector 85 for the purpose of ireeting the leadin r flap of the diamondfolded hag-blank on re 13 under segment 14.
Crosser and pastor segment 14 is provided with the usual paste-appl ing surfaces 103 and the usual creasing-blur es 101 102 for defining the positions res actively at which the rear and front flaps of t 1e bag-blank are to be folded over.
The tendency of the forward end of the (l ianiond-folded blank to cling to the paste-segment is in the present instance counteracted by the following means. Pivotally mounted at 104 in segment 14 is a rearwardly-reachitmg strippin -finger 105. Said-finger is normally disposer in a cavity in and below the surface of said so unent and preferably extends rearwardly o crcaser 102, said creaser having a cavity 106 therein for the reception of said finger. Said strippingfinger is also efficient to counteract any tendency of the ba -blarik to clin to creaser-bl adc 102 after sai blade has pe ormed its function.
The operation of my improved machine is as" follows: The pa er-bag blanks which I preferably use are 0 the well-known tubular form. havin an inwardly-folded tuck in each side thereo and having the forward ends of the lower plies, respectively, projectin 1 slightly in advance of the upper phes thereo and having] each of said lower plies provided with two s 'ts of proper depth om the bases of which slits the front flap of the diamond fold sprin s. The forward end of a suitable blank, as bein now resented to the bite of feed-rolls 23 i 2, t e machine is started and the bag-blah is fed forward into engagement with creaser-blade 87 and creasergroove 88 in said rolls, respectively, and thence onward to distending-rolls 10 11, where. the forward end of the lower ply of the blank is delivered under the now open front finger 51 in roll 11. Said front finger then closes down onto the lower ply of the blank and grips it to the peripxiliery of the roll, Fig. 2.; losely fdllowing t '5 operation needles 57 roll onto and penetrate the blank. The resultant distending of the side tucks ofthe blank affords a free'entrance for the side clips, which by means of their respective 'roll 12 has been revolving in the direction of its arrow and supplemental front finger y clip 51, whereby said lower 1y wings to flatten down and hmsh the diamond fold; but as such means are not a part of my invention nor necessary thereto I have omitted them herein. he continued revolution of rolls 1011 continues the distension and folding down of the diamond fold into rol 10 release their hold and withdraw and the rear flap of the diamond fold is released from needles 57 by stripper 59. substantially folded diamond-folded blank still retained on roll 11 by means of finger 75 and side clips .29 passes under ironing-roll 12 whereby the diamond fold is rolled down an flattened. Fin er 75 is then withdrawn fronrthe front ap and is retracted to its normal position in ironin -roll 12. blank now passes over diafleetor 85, by whic said blank 18 directed onto folding-bed 96 of roll 13 and into the bite of rolls 12 and 13.
Said blank then passes onward under deflector 94 and under paster and crcaser segment 14. If side clips are employed on the folding-beds of roll 13, those of oldin -bed 96 close immediately after passing rol l2, Fi '7, at whichtime creaser 102 has just completed its operation. Shortly before this tune finger 105 commences its outward movement and ressin the forward end of the bag-blank efore 1t strips it from the paste-segment, as shown in Fig. 7. Segment 14 continues its rotation in coacting with roll 13 until creaser 101 engages andcreases the bag-blank. The diamond-folded and creased bag-blank may now be discharged from the machine or retained on folding-bed 96 of roll 13 by means of side clips 93 and conveyed therebv to some suitable means (not shown) for folding the end flaps and completing the bag.
I claim' 1. The combination of a folding-roll, a lever substantially radial to the roll pivoted at each-end of the roll, a side clip mounted in the free end of each lever, means for oscillating the levers toward and away from the roll and means for raising and lowering said levers in the plane of their length all combined and operating together substantially as described.

The combination of a revolublc foldingbed 96, means for holdin a bag-blank thereon, a revoluble pasting-w reel 14, a strippingfinger 105 mounted in said wheel for movement inwardly and outwardly thereof for coaction with the folding-bed, means to actuate the' stripping-finger and means for timing the pasting-wheel and the folding-bed, all cornined and operating together substantially as described.
11. The combination of a folding-roll, a lever substantially radial to the roll pivoted at each end of the roll, a side cli in the free end of each lever, means foroscillbting the levers toward and away from the roll and means for raisin and lowering the side clips radial to the r0 1 all combined and operating together substantially as described.
